Emely, an 11-year-old Chipoo, was brought to Mercy Crusade in Oxnard, CA back in January. She had developed a concerning mammary mass that needed to be examined by a veterinarian. Mercy Crusade is a non-profit low-cost vet clinic that focuses on providing spay & neuter services for their community. Many pet owners are unaware that non-spayed female dogs are more than 4 times more likely to develop mammary tumors than dogs spayed before age 2. Of those, half will be cancerous. Emely had not yet been spayed, so staff at Mercy Crusade were concerned about her risk of cancer. Without hesitation, Emelyβs owners scheduled her surgery. They were concerned about affording the necessary procedures, but were adamant that they would do whatever it took to get Emely the care she needed. Mercy Crusade uses funds from a Grey Muzzle grant to provide financial assistance to pet owners who cannot afford treatment. Thanks to your amazing generosity, Emely had a successful biopsy and spay procedure, recovering with no complications! Adorable old lady (15!) Evie. I fell in love with Evie the first time we met and I canβt help but look at her like this π₯Ή. Senior dogs are magic. Evie cruised through her groom like a champ with some small accommodations: I dried her in stages so she didnβt become overwhelmed and I allowed her (as much as was safe/practical) to choose how she wanted to position herself. One of the advantages of building a relationship with a dog over time is learning to read their body language cues better, and among other things that means I know when to back off and wait a beat when they tell me they are not ready for something they find challenging, such as face handling. These pauses can go a long way to build trust and give dogs a sense of agency in the process. Imagine for example if your dentist just continued to poke and prod at you when you had expressed that you needed a second to ready yourselfβ¦ π± Dogs are speaking to us all the time. Good start to Soph's last month as a 17 year old: she's ruptured her cruciate ligament in her back right leg. Which means she's completed the pair after rupturing her back left one five years ago. Unlike then; Soph is now too old for surgery of that scale so instead she's being treated with a mix of pain medication and complete rest for a couple weeks which the vet is confident should be sufficient to allow it to heal although the rest period may be extended by a few weeks. Great timing as I'm on annual leave for two weeks from Friday so I can keep an eye on Soph's every move and lift her up every toilet need.. It's almost as if she planned this.... π Anyways. Fingers crossed everything goes as the vet thinks it should!

Another 40 shelter dogs lives were saved via #RescueByRelocation, thanks to our friends at @Snipsiskiyoucounty, @StreetDogHero, and @TRACS1000! We started loading the 40 dogs in Sacramento at noon on Monday and left at 2:15 in the afternoon. After delivering 1 dog to Weed, and 2 more to Bend, I drove all night and made it to Thompson Falls, Montana, around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday. I'm utterly wiped out (and sick with a bad cod) and looking forward to a long night of sleep in Spokane, before my 14+ hour drive back to West Sac. πΆπ€ππΎπ΄ - Of course, none of this is possible without Rebecca Martello at Pawsnetwork.org and all of her hard working fosters and relay drivers!
