Someone told me that the fabric’s diffuse organic pattern arose from the fabric being buried in the ground for a long time. This is a test to do something similar with all my linen fabric from previous installation [Gallery Peach Corner] Linen soaked in kaolin and iron oxide. Now everything is mixed with soil and probably worms and snails will take a few bites. The stones form a four metre wide disc that appears to levitate as though held in place by a forcefield. Experimenting with balance and gravitational forces, Ken Unsworth transforms simple materials into a poetic installation that evokes a sense of wonder. Speaking about the work in 2013, the artist noted: ‘It is a machine for thought, and introspection, and meditation. Ole Lejbach and I are working on a new project inspired by the 19th century photographer Jacob Riis (1849-1914). Riis was a Danish-American reporter, newspaper editor and social reformer best known for his photographs of the poor tenement housing on the Lower East Side. He traveled the US sharing his images in slide shows projected through a magic lantern, as he narrated animated stories from Five Points, and advocated for change. In 1890, he published his seminal book How the Other Half Lives, which to this day helps us understand what poverty looked like in the late 19th century New York. While Ole is working and rethinking the images Riis photographed and published, I am looking at the context through reels of microfilms with articles from the New York Times from 1870 to 1914, the time when Riis lived and worked in the US.
