Dear tired momma who misses being creative....I've been you - VERY recently! Newborn and early toddler phases are more conducive to SURVIVAL than to creativity. But at some point, you begin to wake up a little more, you begin to miss feeling like yourself, even though your "self" is forever changed when you brought that little one into the world. But let me tell you, tired momma, that birth doesn't mean you must die to your creative practice. Think about all the ways you've been creative already: balancing nap times and errands, cooking while pumping milk, teaching one kid at the table while another clings to your sweatpants. Now let's talk about carving out regular time (it could be just five minutes to start!) to begin again. Gather inspiration in low-energy ways, setup an easel in a corner even though a painting seems far fetched, gather a basket of supplies so they're ready to go when inspiration suddenly strikes again. You owe it to yourself and the your children. Being a mom has made me MORE creative, not less. It just looks different. Tired creative momma, this one's for you.... There's a reason why I love pitching to brands rather than waiting for one to find me. When I take the time to write a customized, detailed pitch to a brand, more often than not, I'm securing that deal at some point, and YOU can too! Here's what I do (Number 4 is the holy grail) 1. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE! I can't stress this enough. Get to know the brand you want to work with by doing your research. Go through their website and social media. Understand their needs, challenges, and objectives to make your pitch more relevant and impactful. Every brand has a weakness or problem. Find it and express how you can help solve it. This will have you stand out from other Creators. 2. STOP USING GENERIC PITCH TEMPLATES!You need to personalize your pitch. Brand receive lots of pitches all the time, and you need to stand out from the crowd. This tells the brand that you're showing genuine interest in them. Highlight how your content aligns with their values and goals while you're at it! 3. SHOW PROOF OF EXPERTISE Provide proof of your skills and experience by including examples of your work, metrics from past campaigns, or testimonials from other clients. All this can be sent by a link to your portfolio. 4. GIVE THEM A LIL' SAMPLE! Use compelling language and storytelling techniques to capture the brand’s attention. I do this by providing the brand some unique concepts for their service/product so that they can envision what they'd be getting by collaborating with me. 5. END WITH A CLEAR CALL TO ACTION End your pitch with a clear and concise call to action that guides the client on what to do next. Make it easy for them to engage with you. I usually end the pitch with: "Does this interest you? Hey, I'm Michelle, and I’m here to share about life as a working, creative mom, motherhood humour, my dog (because he’s the best), and disability inclusion. I’m a mom of twins, who each have disabilities. Each workshop ran for 2.5 hours, which I was worried might be a little long for our youngest (6 year old) kids. But in both classes, the kids refused to take a snack break and worked right up until the very last second (when I had to practically push them out the door!) On a recent Superintendent’s Conference Day, we offered some DIY Dollhouse workshops for K-4th grade students at the Art Center. It took a while to collect all these shoe boxes, but it was totally worth it! Each student was able to create a 4 room dream house and decorate it with tiny furniture and accessories. Pt. 1 | the story behind my shop | I grew up encouraged to explore creativity: coloring, making greeting cards, building forts in the woods. When I was around 10 a friend taught me the basic stitches of crochet. It interested me but at the time I definitely didn't have money for yarn or patterns or access to the world of Pinterest to look up free patterns. I don't recall when things changed. In my teens the desire to create by crocheting grew overnight and I started using crochet thread to make delicate pieces. Some time later I still wanted to keep making but what could I do with it all? With a push from two of my siblings I decided to create a Facebook page to sell my women's & girls headbands. That's when, in 2017, A Stitch of Whimsy came into being. It was definitely a humble yet exciting beginning. The beginning of 2018 I branched out to include an Instagram account (some of you are STILL here from those days 🫶🏻). Then nothing much changed for the next year & a half. By 2019 I had added a couple keychains and hair bows and that summer I decided to make the leap to an Etsy shop. I opened it the month after we got married since I had moved to a new area and didn't have a job yet. I had no idea what I was doing, but it was a fun and learning experience. In 2020 I tried my hand at creating lace borders/trim and pockets for clothing. They were all mostly a flop but it taught me good lessons and it reminds me now that I was a tad less self conscious back then if my work was "good enough." Come back for pt. 2 later this week.

Take it from me... these are three things I would never do as an interior designer ⬇️ 1️⃣ Buy "the set" While buying a furniture set might feel like it makes designing your home easier, it can really throw off the balance of your space. I recommend selecting from a variety of stores, and having no more than two matching items in a room. 2️⃣ Pick materials that won't work for the realities of my home and needs While an all-white living room or high-end fabrics may look Instagram worthy, if you have young kids or pets running around, you'll probably drive yourself crazy trying to keep your space clean. Choose materials and items that work not only for your design style, but your needs as well! 3️⃣ Start without a furniture plan Good design is, at its core, functional. The aesthetics matter but if it won't work for you and your needs, it doesn't matter how pretty it is. Starting with a furniture layout for the space (including measurements) and taking the time to map out your priorities before diving into shopping will not only make your shopping easier (because you’ll know what pieces you need and what size they should be) it will also make it easier to achieve the result you want in the end.
