Being a full-time working mom is one of the hardest things ever. I remember when I went back to work when little boy was 8-months old. All I can think about was him crying and how I’m not there for him to comfort him and be with him. I felt like such a bad mom because I feel like I’m missing out on him. I thought it would get better, but no, at now 17 months, I still feel that mom guilt. I feel like I’m not doing enough for him. That I guess is the constant struggle of being a mother. The doubts. But I know everyday I’m trying my best and my son is happy and healthy. When you relieve yourself of the pressure to ‘do it all’ and do it perfectly… You will feel better. ➖I am not, nor will I ever be, Martha Stewart. I don’t cook; I burn. ➖I order from Costco instead of going into the store. ➖I don’t go on all of my kids’ field trips. ➖I bring my laptop to swim meets and write between races. It’s all imperfect. Very, very imperfect. And I’m okay with that. Work-life balance is a nice idea in theory. But it generally feels more like a back-and-forth pendulum swing. Sometimes work needs you more. Sometimes your family needs you more. And nowhere is there a rule that you have to do any of it perfectly. Ride the wave. Tolerate the guilt of not being everything to everybody. Let it be messy. Let it be imperfect. And keep going. This is a hard sell. Imperfect is not in your vocab. I get it. BUT. When you tolerate the guilt that inevitably comes up when you can’t do it all perfectly, AND you’re kind to yourself in the process… …it opens doors to massive growth for you – at home, at work, and within yourself. It’s super powerful. You will feel lighter. You will feel more at peace. You will laugh at yourself when you burn your burritos for the hundredth time. Seriously. If you have taken care of everyone else’s needs at home and at work at the expense of your own – let’s change that. This is what we do in coaching.
