Our limited addition Haná Pils collaboration with @CrispMaltings from the UK has been delivered to over a dozen breweries that are all working their magic to create something spectacular. Haná is an old world variety that provides notes of bread flour, dry grass, crackers, and a subtle shortbread sweetness Originally selected in the Haná Valley in modern-day Czech Republic, this landrace barley was used to create the first Pilsner beers in history. As a rustic heirloom variety, Haná barley is historically best suited for decoction or multi-step mashing. Our maltsters allowed for additional modification than historical examples, making this batch able to work well in a variety of environments and mash schedules. This classic variety is well suited for lagers and other grain forward European beer styles (Pilsner, Kolsch, Altbier, Helles, Dark Lager) We can't wait to see these beers begin to arrive at our pub, The Rake, and we are very excited to tell you that you will be able to try several of them at our upcoming summer festival IT'S THE MALT! Two celebrated floor maltsters have joined forces in the world’s first international floor maltster collaboration featuring two unique barley varieties. The first malt will feature an iconic Czech landrace variety, grown in the UK, and floor malted in California… Admiral Maltings and Crisp Malt Present: Haná Pilsner Originally selected in the Haná Valley in modern-day Czech Republic, this landrace of barley was used to create the first Pilsner beers in history in 1842 by Bavarian brewmaster Josef Groll at the Měšťanský Pivovar (Burgher Brewery) of Plzeň (Pilsen) in Bohemia. In 2015, Crisp started working with New Heritage Barley to bring Haná back to commercialization. Since 2019, Haná has been grown and malted by Crisp in Norfolk, England. Earlier this year, Crisp sent its heritage Haná variety grown on Ben Hipperson and Albanwise farms, near Great Ryburgh, England to Alameda, California where Admiral Maltings floor-malted at their facility in the San Francisco Bay Area. This England-to-California, malt-house-to-malt-house collaboration is a global first! Floor malting is an ancient but vanishing art revered by brewers around the world. This time-honored and tested approach creates a unique complexity and depth of flavor that cannot be replicated by any other method. This unique barley variety will be carefully floor malted, kilned, and packaged by the talented staff at Admiral Maltings and offered to a select number of craft breweries. Brewed a smash today, clean and simple: Maris Otter grains and Citra hops. I was aiming for OG 1.048, it came very close, the refractometer gave a pre-boil reading of 1.048. The tilt gave a 1.047 reading after transferring to the fermenter.
