I got caught on camera at Mary's Walk on Sunday! It only made me that much more determined to raise more money for Dempsey Challenge this year! Especially since I somehow wound up with the same bib number for Mary's Walk as I had at my first local Dempsey Challenge. Cancer affects everyone. It starts with the diagnosis of the patient, then it quickly starts to affect not only the patient's life, but the lives of those around them who love and care for them. THINGS TO DO IN MAINE Porsches in the Park 🗓️Mark your calendars! ✔️ Porsches in the Park is an annual event that takes place at Bug Light Park in South Portland and raises money for The Dempsey Center. This year it will take place July 27th from 11am-2pm. There will be about 250 Porsches for you to check out, food trucks, ocean views, a lighthouse and you will be supporting people with cancer. Someone made the comment at Dempsey Challenge, that my shirt had too many ribbons. Each one represents a member of my family who has had cancer, and it isn't even all of them. I did add a new ribbon. My great uncle Gary passed away in January. We didn't learn of his diagnosis until after Dempsey Challenge had taken place. I can't wait until Dempsey Challenge is here again, although I know it will be here and gone all too soon. This one’s personal, for my best friend- my mom. A week before Christmas 2019 my mom was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. She fought through many rounds of treatment including chemo, radiation, and multiple surgeries during the pandemic. She won the fight and was declared free and clear. Just as life started to feel more normal, last summer she was diagnosed again. It came back as stage 4 and she declined very quickly. Once again, she fought and her first follow up scans revealed no evidence of disease. For now, we can breathe for a minute. A cancer diagnosis is one of those things that makes you pause on everything else. No matter what someone’s personal situation is, cancer impacts finances, stress, family and friends, mental and emotional health, nevermind the physical toll. The Dempsey Center provides services at no cost to patients, survivors, caregivers, and families to make the fight a little easier. I get asked quite a bit why I feel so invested in Dempsey Center. Most assume it is strictly because of its founder, but it's not. It has to do with how I got interested in pharmacy. In 2006, I was a care partner for my grandma, who passed away from stomach cancer in December of that year. I would eat lunch at my grandma's hospital bedside and drive the doctors crazy asking questions about her meds. What they were for, how they worked, why they chose them, etc. I talked to my now ex-husband about trying to train in the pharmacy and was essentially told I wasn't smart enough. Years later he let me move to a pharmacy clerk position at Walmart, where my Pharmacy Manager recognized my talent and she got me my first tech license when my ex and I separated for a couple of months. When I smashed my national certification exam in 2019, my ex told me I got lucky. In other words, I still wasn't smart enough, according to him. When I started reading about @dempsey_center through advertisements on Facebook after joining fan groups for its founder, that initial passion for my career came flooding back, and I got a big piece of me back thanks to that. Once you've seen the effects cancer has on one of your loved ones, you can't unsee it. I only wish Dempsey Center would have been around when I was caring for her. I thought I'd post about my 2nd favorite dream of @patrickdempsey . I posted about my favorite one a few weeks ago which is of us talking after Dempsey Challenge by his car, a yellow Porsche. This one starts out with me running across a bridge to get to @dempsey_center where I am involved in a project for Dempsey Challenge working on banners. I'm running late which means I'm still 10 minutes early and Patrick is fishing off of the bridge with a red Porsche racing jacket laying next to him. He playfully pitches it at me, teasing, "You better hurry, you'll be late. " I return fire, pitching the jacket back, saying I'm already late. Thus starts a playful chase with us roasting one another while running up a spiral staircase in the Center which results in making the staff, volunteers , and clients laugh. We get to a conference room at the top of the stairs, and set to work. The tone of our conversation changes to a deeper, more meaningful, get to know you better type. I would love to have a full conversation with him, I admit. The only thing I'll ever ask for from him is another hug. This year has been so amazing! From moving to Maine, where I feel like I can finally breathe, and not have to constantly watch over my shoulder, away from my abuser. To the many, many friends I've made, not all of whom I've met in person yet. To moderating on TikTok for an amazing team. To becoming a mother in law, and a Nana to a beautiful baby girl! To participating in Dempsey Challenge locally, meeting so many wonderful people from @dempsey_center , and attending the Champions for Hope Reception. To meeting my hero, not once, but 3 times, and he has yet to fail to give me a hug even if it's just a side hug. To getting his name tattooed on my arm to help cover a scar left by my abuser. I got these a few weeks ago, and I still love the design on them! And I have a similar saying as my bio on here. As a pharmacy technician, I help many people fight their battles with the meds that I either deliver to the pyxis med units in the hospital where I work, mix IV medications (including chemo when the need arises), or hand deliver certain medications to patient rooms. As a former care partner for my grandmother who passed away from stomach cancer, I understand the battles faced on that end from both being a care partner and watching her go through it. That battle started my passion for medicine and healing. A passion that was reignited by @dempsey_center . As a moderator on TikTok, I try to help others sort out things based on my experiences as a domestic violence survivor and someone who was pulled back from the ledge of suicide. @patrickdempsey literally saved my life on that one. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The chances are pretty high that you know someone who has dealt or is dealing with breast cancer. The most important things you should know are: 1. Early Detection Saves Lives: One of the most effective ways to combat breast cancer is through early detection. Regular breast self-exams, clinical breast exams, and mammograms can help catch the disease in its early stages when treatment is more likely to be successful. 2. Breast cancer affects the individual diagnosed and also their loved ones. We are lucky to have the Dempsey Center (@dempsey_center) here in Maine supporting individuals and families going through this journey with programming and free services. They help people feel less alone and more empowered to fight this disease. Support them if you can! 3. We Need More Research and Advances: Research plays a significant role in improving treatment options and, ultimately, finding a cure for breast cancer. especially #StageIVneedsmore 4. BC Can Affect Women and Men: While breast cancer is more commonly associated with women, it's important to remember that men can also be affected. Awareness and education about breast health and the risks associated with breast cancer apply to everyone. 5. We Need to Break the Stigma: Addressing breast cancer openly helps break down stigmas and encourages dialogue. Awareness leads to early intervention and improved outcomes. We have a number of patients navigating breast cancer treatment. We love you and hope acupuncture brings some relief. ❤️

I get to meet my granddaughter next month! And, I'm actually healing after what was done to me for so long! I'm slowly getting my confidence back, and today, I covered a scar left by the man who tried to break me with the name of the one who has helped put me back together. This was one of the best nights of my life! @patrickdempsey , you were the first man in 2 years who didn't trigger my PTSD when you touched me. Any other man who had tried caused me to panic and freeze with fear that I'd get hurt again even when I knew I wasn't in danger. When you hugged me, I just felt safe. It's not a feeling I get to have very often. And I was able to go almost a full two weeks after this without the PTSD nightmares waking me up! Thank you so very much!
