We recently visited @maggiesnottingham our chosen charity for the Nottingham 5.30 event and we wanted to share some words from their Fundraising Manager with you all - ‘Based in the grounds of the City Hospital, Maggie’s Nottingham is a drop-in centre offering free support to people with cancer and their loved ones. We help with the challenges that cancer brings in a calm, welcoming, non-clinical environment. We’re here for anyone with cancer and their family and friends, whatever kind of cancer, and whatever stage they’re at. All our support is free, and no appointment or referral is needed. There’s also no time limit on our support, we’re here for as long as we’re needed. The centre offers people a break from the hospital, the chance to meet people who know what you’re going through and a range of activities and support groups that improve wellbeing.’ £1 of every entry is going back to Maggie’s Nottingham, and when you enter 5.30 Nottingham you also have the opportunity to donate/fundraise for the local charity. Reps: 💪 You can build #strength between 3-30 reps and anywhere between 1-4 sets. 💪However, according to the American College of Sports Medicine, the #exercise guidelines for #cancersurvivors recommends working between 6-15 reps, and 1-3 sets. 💪There is nothing magical about these numbers, as you can build strength with any number of repetitions, but from a practical standpoint, no one wants to perform 30 repetitions of one exercise when you can do 6 and get the same benefit Weight: 🏋️♀️ See if you can do at least 4 reps with your chosen weight. Was it easy or hard? If it was hard, stop. It’s too heavy. If it was easy, see if you can go to 8. If you feel a slight burn, great; you have a good weight. If you reach 8 and it’s too easy, try getting to 12 reps. 🏋️♀️ If you do 12 and you don't even feel the slightest burn, it’s too light and you need to bump up in weight or make it harder. 🏋️♀️ The goal is to work between 6-15 reps, and if you choose an exercise that allows you to only do 4 reps, then the weight or movement is too hard and may require supervision for proper form and technique. Sets: 👏 A set is a group of repetitions of an exercise and can be separated with short or long rest periods, depending on the exercise. 👏 When starting out, 1 set lets your body know "Hey, look! We got some movement! Great." With 2 sets, your body may tell you "Ok, I had to work a little but feeling good", and if you jump into 3 sets too soon, your body will tell you "Ouch" quickly, and soreness will kick in. 👏 So, be mindful to start slowly, and build your way up. 👏 The goal is to work your way up to 3 sets. BONUS 💥 Keep in mind, however, that this does not mean by the end of the week. It should take a minimum of 6-8 weeks, depending on the exercise, to work your way up to 3 sets. Scared about what it would do to me. But in the end, it challenged me. It was part of what shaped a new version of me. I remember the day so vividly. And every day since. I am better having gone through it, even though no one should ever have to. I hear this a lot - and honestly, even hear myself saying it sometimes. 'My cancer isn't as bad as others'. In truth, cancer just plain sucks. It doesn't matter what type you've had, what treatment you've had or not had, or whether you were lucky enough to catch it early. Your experience is still valid. That doesn't mean we can't feel sick at the thought of how horrible some other people have it. It just means we accept that we truly have been through unspeakable hurt, trauma and fear too.
