I really have wanted to post this for quite a few years. Every October when it's Down Syndrome Awareness month and every March when it's World Down Syndrome Day. All the positive posts highlighting the amazing thing that Down Syndrome is, how times have changed, how these babies and children will grow and thrive into independent adults but this isn't always the case! There are SO many different levels of Downs but mainstream media only shows the good and parents and organisations only show the best. Sadly this isn't reality for many families and many children and adults with Down Syndrome. Yes Paul is at the worst end of the scale but you won't know this until many years down the line after a Downs baby is born. There is no test that can confirm how bad your baby who has Trisomy 21 will be. No test to confirm whether they will be able to walk or talk or go to mainstream school and sit their GCSE's or if they will have to attend a special needs school. No test to say that they will be potty trained slightly later around 5 or 6 or if they will never understand and still soil themselves 4/5/6 times a day well into their 40's..... Okay, friends, it’s now Saturday in Lithuania where I started traveling on Friday morning. However, I am still at it and I am just now having a fully-leaded evening cuppa on what remains Friday evening where I have landed halfway around the world. I have one more flight and will get home in about five hours just before the ‘ol sands of time move us into Holy Saturday. Time and time variation is so fascinating! Currently I am cappuccino fueled, continuing to think of #worlddownsyndromeday as I have on socks that are encouragingly fun for me, relishing the small good of having now surmounted all customs and security checks for this round of journeying, and — especially on this day; especially on this Good Friday — remaining soberly cognizant of the immensely sacrificial, generous Love that God has bequeathed to all of humanity. Happy World Down Syndrome Day! I remember last year feeling so emotional because I was celebrating this day for the first time! Today, Rowan got to celebrate this day for the first time! Today signifies the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome (3/21), which causes Down syndrome. In honor of that extra chromosome, please ‘Rock Your Socks’ to show how much fun a little something extra can be! Today Rowan had her Cardiologist appointment- her cardiologist loved our shirts and socks! He had no clue it was world Down syndrome day, so we were able to share that with him; and he said he will make sure he remembers that for next year!
