Bringing awareness and recognizing the role that relational connections have on improving long-term well-being for children and youth in foster care. . 🚨: Youth who emancipate from foster care without permanent connections are at risk for adverse outcomes in adulthood. . 📈 There are currently over 390,000 children and youth in foster care. 📈 Approximately 20,000 youth are emancipated from foster care without a permanent family. 📈 In 2021, 77% of eligible youth in foster care (ages 14-17) left care without receiving the federally funded services necessary to prepare them for adulthood and independent living. . . Roux’s primary role is in support of first responders but is used in field as situations like this one arise. When first arriving on scene and speaking with the child about positive coping mechanisms, he had mentioned that he wished he had a dog. I said “well buddy you’re in luck today” and brought Roux from the car. Therapy dog Rumble and his handler Megan made the most of National Therapy Animal Day by speaking to a class of Kindergarteners who are learning about dog jobs.🐾🥰 Megan said, "We enjoyed telling the kids about his first job training to be a guide dog and how when that didn’t work out he went into therapy work instead. After we talked to them for a bit they read to him from their workbooks while Rumble walked around and listened while they took turns petting him. They were all so cute, and so fun to talk to." Naomi first requested @pawspettherapy visits for the #palliativecare ward in late 2018 and had to negotiate lots of red tape to make Bunny’s visits happen from early 2019. This evening we’d like to introduce you to one of our newer therapy dog teams, Samantha and English springer spaniel Josie. They were already working as a therapy dog team before they joined us and we are so happy to have them as volunteers for our organization. Samantha and Josie have experience visiting different types of facilities and tonight we’d like to highlight their work in a school setting. They are regular visitors to Project Impact STEM Academy, a K-12 school in Meridian. Josie’s presence is multifaceted. Her main job is to provide stress relief to students, but she’s also been able to teach students that dogs can be kind and loving. One student, who was on the receiving end of a nasty dog bite, it slowly learning to get over their fear of dogs. Josie’s trick show provides a nice example of how to build a caring and fun relationship with a dog. When needed, students can also speak to their school counselor while petting Josie, helping the student feel more relaxed and comfortable when talking about tough topics. Teddy was definitely top dog in his obedience class!!! Today he earned his Canine Good Citizen title and his Canine Good Citizen Advanced Title. In 3 weeks he’ll start training to be a therapy dog. Juno and I have decided to share some life changing news! Juno has been training for about a month to become a therapy dog! While she might not look like the average therapy dog, pets and people are her favorite things. Juno will be 4 in June and we are finally excited to say we have found a job that wears her out:) We will hopefully start training classes this summer, being I just had a major surgery and need a month or two of rest. But for now we’ve been training at home and going to stores like TJ Max to get used to sounds and work on walking on a loose leash. Service dogs undergo specialized training to perform specific tasks that aid individuals with medical disabilities. At Operation Freedom Paws, our mission is to empower our clients by teaching them how to train their own service dogs to support their specific disability, enabling them to lead more independent lives. Therapy dogs serve an important but very different role. Unlike service dogs, therapy dogs are trained to offer emotional support and companionship to people in hospitals, nursing homes, libraries, schools, and beyond.
