This is what Cancer looks like. It's harsh, it's painful and it's exhausting everyday. Oddly enough I put myself through similar things that build my body whilst the previous tears it down. Life is strange... I can't control the things that happen in my life, however, I can control the way I react and deal with them. I have absolutely zero desire to leave this place early. I'll give everything in me to make sure I watch my grandkids and even great grandkids grow up. If you want to see someone who has a hunger for life look no further. I have overcome everything that's ever been thrown at me and I've grown stronger in doing so. If this thing wants a fight then let's go! I don't lose. I refuse. Cancer. The "C" word was something I knew about but it wasn't until Nyeta Allen aka Happy Couture, Mark, Nyema, and all my other friends who didn't just die from cancer but lives were impacted by it. The one that hit me the hardest was JaE. Words cannot even begin to describe how lost for words I was last year when I found out. And then @drniimani reached out to me and asked if I would join this journey with her, the Byrd Cancer Education and Advocacy Foundation. I couldn't say no but before I joined Byrd, came @pinkmissionsummit where I met so many amazing Cancer thrivers, a breast cancer awareness documentary and event initiative curated by @rickycodio where I met @bossgirlsmom whom I have the utmost respect and admiration. Nia and I talked about her vision for Byrd and my goal was to bring that vision to life. I accepted the role of Executive Director and we decided to launch our first Expo for Byrd. The #1 goal was to educate people but also offer them free health screening. Especially a mammogram. We worked our asses off for this Expo and OMG, what a phenomenal, beautiful, and impactful event it was. Honestly, I could write a book but IG won't let me so I'll summarize as best as possible. 5 anos de remissão do carcinoma mucinoso de ovário. 5 de menopausa. 5 de cicatrização. 5 da última quimio. Já gastei metade da minha sobrevida (pelas estatísticas). 5 anos de culpa também. De medo 24hs. Cada pontada na barriga é um alarme que dispara: será q voltou? Mês de checkup é uma tortura (e eu to atrasada inclusive). Eu prendo a respiração no dia do exame e só solto depois de abrir os envelopes, semanas depois. A verdade é que eu to morrendo. Todos estamos. Mas de alguma forma depois dessa experiência a morte virou algo tão concreto quanto as paredes do quarto. Já não é algo que vai acontecer um dia. É algo que está acontecendo agora. Mas se tem uma coisa boa (tem várias na real) desse rolê todo é que quando eu me vejo entrando numa espiral de sofrimento eu retorno pra essas memórias e realizo que nada, absolutamente nada que esteja acontecendo e que não seja uma doença grave (minha, dos meus amados ou animais) tem importância. Nada é urgente, nada é grave, nada pode de fato me derrubar, e mesmo que derrube tem como levantar. E tudo volta a ser leve outra vez. Posso me concentrar em apreciar meus últimos momentos de vida. Cortar a grama, me aventurar na hidroponia, dar banho no negão e amassar o lanterninha. E algo me diz que talvez, quando realmente for o ultimo, será na verdade o primeiro, de outra jornada. 4 years ago I was laying in my bed, alive but not living, not knowing if I was going to get through my cancer battle. 4 years ago I didn’t have this vision for myself. My goal is to now further my education and become an oncology esthetician and an esthetician instructor so that I can work with cancer survivors, to share my story and educate on safer holistic alternatives in the beauty industry. My advice to you is to NEVER give up, to walk in faith, and to believe in yourself because you can do anything you set your heart and mind to. On October 8th, I’ll be 4 years cancer free! Weekly round-up from riboclib/fulvestrant treatment cycle 2️⃣ week 3️⃣ After feeling I was in control last week, this week was tougher. The cumulative effect of three weeks of ribociclib really caught up with me and I struggled with severe fatigue and very low moods this week. And a covid booster ( #9) midweek didn't help. Then along came Friday and the much needed break from treatment 🙌🏻 gradually over the weekend I have begun to feel more me again - and had a pretty good time while making the most of that! I started my weekend at Future Dreams house for a secondary breast cancer coffee morning. And although I was incredibly anxious beforehand, I am really pleased I made the step to seek support from, and also to connect with, people in a similar boat to me. I will look forward to my next visit. Then a cheeky catch up with the gorgeous Mrs G before heading to Cheltenham for a family weekend. We had a fab Turkish meal before an evening of fun playing shuffleboard and enjoying a couple of drinks. Although I am not strictly banned from alcohol, I have found myself not fancying it lately but it was nice to relax while off treatment and enjoy a couple of g&t's (and a totally unnecessary apple sourz shot at the restaurant 🙈) This morning we had a lovely lazy start to the day with Mum joining us for brunch in the Airbnb, before a quick coffee and catch up with Dad & Jennie and then on the road and back home in time for a chilled Sunday evening...just a shame that Monday morning is coming round so quickly 😭 Not to mention trying to mentally prepare for more treatment this Friday. I went to see Rhod Gilbert performing his new stand-up routine in Newtown a few nights ago. The show is based on his diagnosis, treatment, and recovery from cancer. Rhod Gilbert is a superb comedian and managed to cover these sensitive topics with an intense mixture of hard-hitting humour and brutal honesty. One minute I was howling in laughter and the next I was wiping a tear from my eye. He comes across as an immensely humble man who is very grateful to all the people who helped him through this extremely difficult period of his life, even John. What Psilocybin Could Mean for End-of-Life Care Quote from Psychology Today, in an interview with Dr. Anthony Bossis: "Psilocybin produced immediate, significant, and sustained improvements in both anxiety and depression. And about 80% of those people showed sustained benefits nearly seven months later. We're going to continue to track those people going forward. That was remarkable and hadn't been seen before. We also saw reductions in a measure called demoralization, which is a very common and deep source of suffering for people at the end of life. Both demoralization and hopelessness were improved immediately after the medicine session. Up to 70% of the people reported that the experience was either the single most or in the top five most meaningful experiences of their lifetime, which is somewhat stunning to hear. Almost 90% reported that it improved life satisfaction. That was important. We don't die well in America and it's really kind of the final taboo, it's something we don't speak about. There's so many people who suffer enormously and there aren't enough tools to address that end-of-life distress. So these results show people having a single experience and having anxiety, depression, and a host of existential measures reduced." 🏃🏻♀️💨❤️What an awesome race weekend as always in Nashville with Rock and Roll Running Series. Such a privilege to run with the St. Jude’s team and thousands of other runners this weekend to support the children and families of St. Jude. I love being a part of the running community, so many runners out on the course putting meaning to their miles, carrying flags and ruck sacks for the friends and family they have lost, names written on their legs and backs of children and family members that lost the battle with cancer, runners wearing costumes to bring awareness to their environmental causes. Such and inspiring weekend and always reminds me why I keep coming back. A few of my favorite memories and meaningful moments from the weekend were; ❤️The lady that invited me to her table when I was alone at dinner ❤️The Nashville community for showing up to cheer and support the runners ❤️Little boy dressed as Spider-Man giving high fives ❤️The families throwing a block party at Mile 5 ❤️The families passing out orange slices and suckers to the runners ❤️The kids using squirt guns to spray runners ❤️The man standing on a ladder spraying runners with his water hose ❤️The St. Jude hero that took a video of me running so I could remember today and my cute outfit ❤️The ladies that asked to take a picture because they loved my enthusiasm ❤️The mom who tapped me on the shoulder so her shy daughter could tell me she liked my costume ❤️The servers at St. Jude Hero village who gladly got me water after the race, took care of making sure the area was clean and stocked for the runners finishing ❤️The medics who took care of runners that were struggling with injury and the heat ❤️❤️ All the friends and family that donated to my fundraising efforts for this weekend.
