The cleanup and tear-down operations of the @nfldraft has delivered unexpected benefits to local nonprofits. Materials such as carpeting, wood, and the very stairs that NFL hopefuls ascended as their names were called are finding a second life. @detroitdogrescue is at the forefront of this initiative, cleverly repurposing these elements to build a new spay and neuter clinic on Detroit's east side. The new clinic will provide essential services such as free spaying and neutering to help manage and support the local dog population. Beyond the direct benefits to DDR, this effort is setting a precedent for sustainability and community support. The materials salvaged from the NFL Draft are also being distributed to other nonprofits in the area, helping them enhance their facilities and expand their services. The repurposing of NFL Draft materials shows how the legacy of such events can continue to support and enrich the local community long after the crowds have gone home. Last week, @detroitpeoplesfoodcoop (DPFC) opened to the public. The store is an African American-led, community-owned grocery cooperative in Detroit seeking to expand access to healthy foods for predominantly Black and low-income residents and pump investment back into the community – an area that faces concerns of gentrification and displacement. "I hope that the co-op contributes to a different way of thinking about economic development in black communities that have been kept out of the mainstream economy." – Malik Yakini, executive director of the Detroit Black Community Sovereignty Network and board of the Detroit People’s Food Co-Op Yakini shared with us that his goal – and that of the network – is to keep the co-op's profits in the community. The store is collectively owned and governed by its members who pay a one-time fee of $200. Hood morning y’all, I am rich! Truly! I have a basket of farm fresh eggs sitting in my kitchen! I think I have stated before that building community is difficult especially for me (a self proclaimed introvert with maybe a dash of misanthropy) living in a digital age where connection feels fabricated. I have a hard time letting people in then finding the time to nurture those relationships once I do. It’s something I am constantly trying to improve but these eggs symbolize a change. Given to me by two different black women who I wouldn’t consider friends (just yet no shade yall) but I would call them a part of my community. It’s small and not quite tight knit but I am building. I am building by leaving my house (funny but true), supporting like minded people, showing up to farmstead events, and loving on the children under my care. I will literally wait to the very last minute to do things knowing full well I’m going to pay for it. It’s been one of my weaknesses for so long and there’s times when I struggle with it more than others. Now with being a mom, having a career and a business sometimes I can feel so overwhelmed just due to me letting everything pile up due to procrastination. Lately I have started praying asking GOD to remove it. I have also started reading books to help with it and most importantly I have started declaring that I am NOT a procrastinator. Affirming this over my life and asking GOD for direction has done wonders. Now I’m still struggling with it but I am finally starting to commit to doing something about it. I believe we can be the best version of ourselves if we believe we can be and set the examples our children need to see. Despite its hasty start, the station never had the grand opening it deserved – until now. On June 6, get ready for the grand reveal after six years of extensive renovations! Pastor Brandon dove into the significance of the "red print," the words of Jesus, guiding our lives and shaping our understanding of the Church. Pastor B shared that understanding that to grow, we must hold each other accountable and address our flaws and deficiencies. We were thrilled to meet Maria for the very first time earlier this year. She had heard about Spectacle Society and was excited to get the unique opportunity to see @franciskleinparis , a handcrafted line in its entirety during our January event. We discussed Maria’s personal style, her day to day activities and the things she loves to do the most. From there we explored all of the stunning frames from Paris that fit her style, her lifestyle, her prescription and her features. The moment we tried on this asymmetrical piece, we knew they had to be hers.
