Happy NO-DIG day 2023 🪱🥳 My decision to opt for “no-dig” or “no-till” when setting up our gardens was a simple one. This regenerative approach mimics the natural mulching processes that occur to create a healthy forest floor and offers myriad benefits to humans, soil, and the wider environment. Of course, there is a certain amount of soil disturbance when pulling a carrot, or maybe using a trowel to harvest the potatoes, some amount of soil disturbance is a natural process in nature, but this method is just about minimising that disturbance and protecting the soils structure, so the complex ecosystem found within can thrive. 🪱👀 This methodology also increases crop production and quality as it maintains and promotes the mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship between soil and plant life, therefore the need for artificial fertilisers or pesticides is eliminated. During the process of photosynthesis, plants use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. In doing so, they embed both glucose and CO2 into the soil. These deposits support the organisms present within a balanced soil structure, and in return, they aid in processes such as nutrient mineralisation, which allow the plant’s roots to uptake the vital minerals they need to produce an abundant organic crop. This maintains a healthy plant-insect balance, and as the soil is undisturbed, CO2 and other gases are not released into the atmosphere. There is also a growing body of evidence that these organisms play a significant role in the functioning of the human body. Sprint - I usually grow my new potatoes in sacks and have reasonable success although never quite like you see in the seed catalogues. This year I have tried a variety called sprint in one of my premium raised beds. With any luck these super quick spuds should be out end of June so enough time to follow them with some Calabrese. Earthing up is a little problem in a raised bed so I plant these in trenches - then fill them up as the plants appear and then much around them as they grow. After having 3 years and nine seasons of gardening experience… I’m starting to get a sense of what I like to grow. Radishes are a reliable and rewarding crop. They typically take just a month to grow, direct sow — it doesn’t get much easier than that! Radishes are a staple in our diet. We eat them in salads nearly daily. They’re also good on anything that needs a lil crunch. Slice and arrange them with quality butter on a baguette like the French. You can even roast them like little yellow or red potatoes. Similar flavor profile as a potato when cooked, except less carbs. I have terrible trouble getting carrots to germinate. It’s been so cold I warmed the soil with some cliches but I have seen others putting planks over the seeds until they germinate. The idea is the planks stop the top layer of soil drying out giving the little seeds a chance to get going. Thank you @hixsonhighschool Ag Program for a huge donations of plants!! They donated over 150 tomatoes, squash, melon and eggplant that will go to the @chattfoodbank Foxwood Food Center, community gardens and Hunger Relief Partners. Their program is really impressive. They manage two greenhouses, one of which houses an aquaponics system where they grow lettuce for their school and others. They also grow edibles, natives, herbs and more to sell to the local community. I loved hearing from the kids and seeing their enthusiasm for growing food. Garden bed glow up 🌱✨ The previous homeowners put a big, in ground garden bed that did its job for our first few years living in this house. However, it was time for an upgrade. Raised beds are so much better for space planning, easier on the back, and of course a pretty addition to our backyard 🌸 We kept the garden the same size, but divided it into a modified keyhole design to maximize the space. And of course added the trellises and lights for a whimsical touch!

It was a beautiful day for spending time in the allotment. Enjoyed the first Iris and first bloom on the bistorta. The potatoes surprised me: 29 out of 30 had come up! I planted them far too early because they were sprouting already when I received them in february, but they did fine even though the allotment is mostly shaded and therefore colder. The berry bush is already loaden with fruit, and the raspberries also looked promising despite not pruning them. It's that time of year again—vegetable gardening season is in full swing! Over the next few weeks, we'll shine a spotlight on some of our fantastic veggie plants. With over 130 different varieties available for purchase throughout the season, there's something for every gardener's taste and preference. Today’s highlight is Orange Blaze Peppers! The brightest bell on the block is Orange Blaze Hybrid, a crunchy sweet pepper with early maturity, great disease resistance, and delectable flavor. Orange Blaze is ready in just over 2 months from setting out seedlings in the garden. This extends its season by a week or two. And you will love these big, blocky bells. On average they reach 3 to 4 inches long and about 1½ inches wide, with 2 to 3 lobes and a smooth, uniform shape. They can be picked green if need be, but their best flavor and most vitamins occur in the final days of ripening when the peppers abruptly turn from deep green to bright orange. This plant is stocky and well-branched and will appreciate a bit of support to hold up its big bounty of peppers. Expect it to reach about 2 feet high and nearly as wide, and to continue growing and producing all summer long. When autumn is warm, Orange Blaze may continue right into the fall season. Resistant to bacterial leaf spot and tobamo virus, Orange Blaze is healthy and vigorous—one of the easiest peppers to grow. Try it out this season and see what all the fuss is about.
