Celebrating Harmony Week has become a special event on the WRSC calendar. This was evident from the moment the school gates opened on Thursday 21 March with dozens of students arriving proudly dressed in their traditional cultural clothing for the day. A sea of colour welcomed us that morning, with students representing Lebanon, Samoa, India, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Scotland, Afghanistan, Syria, Turkey, Malawi, The Philippines, Germany and Australia’s First Nations, just to name a few. The festivities kicked off at lunchtime, when we welcomed acclaimed Senegalese musician Lamine Sonko to the College. Lamine led an enthusiastic group of students in a drumming workshop that could be heard all over the school grounds and created a joyful atmosphere which continued into session 5 for our whole-school Harmony Day assembly. This began with a beautiful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, performed by Kaelun “KB” Brown, his son, and Year 12 student Shanikwa, who shared in a heartfelt speech what her identity as a young Aboriginal woman meant to her. After the ceremony, we moved to the College gym for a whole-school assembly which included an invigorating guest-speech by Lamine, a piano performance by Year 9 student Jacq, and our annual multicultural parade. This assembly was run entirely by our newly-appointed SRC student leaders. Finally some dryer days to get onto the next stage of the reservoir project: protective underlay for the reservoir's very precious & gigantic pond liner. As you can imagine: pond liner + sharp / stabby / pierce-y things in the ground = serious tears before bedtime for the whole project. Especially in the deeper parts of the reservoir where the liner will be under considerable water pressure. & just to make things more interesting, the monumental rains have washed the top layer of soil away, exposing no end of sharp, stabby flints for the liner to contend with. So before we can even unwrap our very precious & gigantic pond liner, we need to underlay the entire reservoir with a protective layer of cushioning. & this starts with laying a rot proof barrier to keep hungry worms out of the aforementioned critical cushioning layer... For this we’re repurposing used silage wrap - which we decided to lay orange side up for a laugh. Simple things right?

Demolished in 1947, the 1787 Levi Todd House — known as Ellerslie — lay on the current site of Lexington’s Southland Christian Church and faced Richmond Road. A significant loss, it is the subject of today’s Forgotten Friday post. While early settler Levi Todd is perhaps best known as the grandfather of Mary Todd Lincoln, he was also a major-general in the Kentucky Militia, represented Fayette County in several state constitutional conventions, and served as county clerk for 25 years. Georgian-style Ellerslie was reportedly the second brick building in the region and doubled in size around 1792, when Levi inherited 100 acres from his late brother, John. As clerk, Levi stored the county’s land records on his property in a small stone structure. Arsonists infamously set fire to it in 1803 to destroy evidence of these claims. Much like Glendower (see our 9-22-23 post), which remained within the intermarried Todd-Wickliffe-Preston clan, ownership of Ellerslie eventually passed to Margaret Wickliffe Preston. Her family either rented it out or used it as a seasonal recreational retreat. In 1882, Margaret’s husband, General William Preston, incorporated the Lexington Hydraulic and Manufacturing Company to supply the city with water from a 1,600-acre catchment area encompassing the Ellerslie estate. This tract was ideal for reservoir construction, as it contained a stratum of “cold blue clay” that resisted absorption. After much wrangling, the City Council approved this scheme; Reservoir 1 began operating in 1885. The Prestons retained exclusive fishing rights on the inundated land, a claim that Margaret later asserted in court. In 1904, the water company acquired 300 acres of the old Preston Farm and thereafter used the log cabin adjacent to Ellerslie as a clubhouse. By 1947, it decided to raze the unoccupied main building on the pretext of structural instability. While vacant, it had “been looted by vandals who stole doorknobs, fireplace mantles, moldings, and even staircasings.” On a more positive note, bricks from Ellerslie were salvaged and used to construct new Sunday-school rooms at the extant East Hickman Baptist Church.

@KaneoRestaurant is a Macedonian restaurant with an old style village feel within the interior which is cool and adds a welcoming cosy ambience. The menu offers plenty of choice but opted for the grill section choosing the mixed grill which provides variety. All meats are perfectly cooked and seasoned with a light touch of the grill adding to the flavour. The dish presents pork neck, spare ribs, chicken, a Macedonian sausage, and a beef patty. I liked all but found the sausage quite intense in flavour dominated by the salt. To counteract a basket of bread was served so made a mini hot dog of sorts along with the salad and it tastes fine. The chips aren't that crunchy and needed more seasoning but the salad is a welcome addition to offset the meatiness of the dish. My favourite would be the beef patty which oozed flavour from the first bite to the last.
