One of my favorite memories while traveling Guatemala was at a hostel that was inside of a family’s home. In the evenings you could gather in the kitchen and share meals with them as well as enjoy the chaos of kids coming home from school and running out to other activities. This particular evening we were all getting a little competitive and started a pull up contest on the support beam. Well sure enough after we each gave it our best shot and my 10 was good enough for 3rd place the baby came up and kicked me off the podium. Well played young one. When I went to Guatemala I didn’t realize you could hike a volcano to stare at another volcano erupt every 20-30 min (now it’s all reels wants to remind me of) but hiking for 6 hours through dust and 40 degree temperature swings we were at the precipice waiting in the dark. I kept looking around at people all bundled up complaining that it hadn’t gone off yet, others eagerly holding their phones ready to record and share it with the world and I sat with my little camera hearing my uncle say “you have to know when to put the camera down and experience something with your own eyes” so I decided to not look through the viewfinder and just sit patiently waiting for it to erupt. Well after probably 25 min of waiting in the cold dark, BOOM! I marveled as I watched red streaks light up the night and smoke pillow higher and higher. And as I watched I clasped my camera with cold shaky hands and fired one frame from the hip. I watched as the color rolled down the mountain side and the brief flash of light slowly faded back to darkness and I just love how this happy accident turned out. She had me stop at the picture of a guy with a smiley marshmallow for a head, and she's loved his music since. Now whether she's at the park or on the drive home, she always requests "Happy Smile." I was challenged to create a 3+ photo layout creatively. I loved being able to crop these photos and arrange them to frame my acrylic title, which I painted with a black Posca marker. Week 16 of 2024 #illustrateyourweek in my illustrated journal. Continuing with some raw sketching in colored pencil and then just inking over the top…. The main portrait, I only inked part of it (on purpose). She had on yellow-tinted sunglasses though, and when I added that in, it was fun to play a bit with the color.
