Every day I am reminded of the sheets I collected from the USPS Legends of Hollywood stamp series—all framed—but you become so used to seeing them, there are times I have to stop myself and actually *look* at them, be in the moment, mindful, and present. But during that series, to my knowledge, there was no #DorothyDandridge (or #SidneyPoitier ... or #HarryBelafonte or #RubyDee or #OssieDavis or #DianaSands or #DiahannCarroll). (Yes! There is the incredible #LenaHorne for the Black Heritage collection! 👏🏾) Which brought my mind specifically to Dorothy Dandridge ... Fact. When you stop to think of the impact Dorothy Dandridge had with one film alone, #CARMENJONES (1954), *one film alone*, that *to this date* is talked about, referenced, and met with enthusiasm, even in clips from people who have never seen the film before, she is recognized instantly through a still shot from the film or a publicity image of her, never mind in her iconic red pencil skirt and off-the-shoulder black blouse (designed by Mary Ann Nyberg). That one film ... immortalized Dorothy Dandridge. And to use the word "icon" in association with Dandridge is not misused. Combining her work outside CARMEN JONES/films—child star, nightclub acts, television appearances—made me reflect strongly--scratch that--reminded me, confirmed, only proves something I have thought and mentioned before ... Imagine what sort of career Dandridge would have had, the scope, had the field been COMPLETELY open for her equivalent to a Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner, Audrey Hepburn? In spite of, Dorothy is still remembered, discovered, and discussed today. And despite the end of the Legends of Hollywood stamp series (as far as I know, 1995 — 2016), placing her, Dorothy Dandridge—and other Black actors of that era who made an impact, changed the game, and were so way ahead of their time, "Hollywood" still hasn't fully read the memo—on a #LegendsOfHollywood stamp is ... overdue.
One of my favourite inspirations is the great Dorothy Dandridge! The American actress was ( and still is !) the embodiment of glamour and the "50's" chic. I discovered Dorothy in the iconic movie Carmen Jones and was mesmerized by her aura and strength. Her career is inspiring, and her legacy even more so: Dorothy has opened up voices to a world behind her as she was the first black American actress to be nominated for an Oscar. Proving that the impossible doesn't exist and that there's no stronger force than female resilience. Great beauty Vivian Dandridge (born April 22, 1921), sister of the more famous Dorothy Dandridge, was given the moniker ‘The Black Marilyn Monroe’ (so too incidentally was the songstress Joyce Bryant), during her 20-year career. • Born in Cleveland, Ohio to Cyril and Ruby, her parent’s split shortly before the birth of her sister. To make ends meet, Ruby and then girlfriend Neva, put both young girls’ boundless energy to work. Billed as “The Wonder Children”, the duo was eventually earning upwards of $500 per appearance singing, dancing, and performing skits. • However, when the 1929 Stock Market crash hit, both women and the girls struggled. Ruby’s solution, Hollywood, with Vivian making her debut as a ‘Native Child’ in “King Kong” (1933), starring Fay Wray and Bruce Cabot, for RKO Studios. • Later, Mrs. Dandridge formed a trio for her daughters with Etta Jones. Billed as The Dandridge Sisters, they were likened to The Andrew Sisters, and began appearing in musical segments onscreen as well as touring with Nat King Cole among others. • The trio went on to feature in the films “The Big Broadcast of 1936”, “A Day at the Races” (1937), “Going Places” (1938), and Irene (1940), before Vivien went on to play Bob Hope’s servant in “Road to Morocco” (1942). • In 1943, she voiced ‘So White’ in the animated “Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs”, one of the ‘Censored Eleven’ animated cartoons withheld from syndication since the 1960s, with Ruby voicing her mother. • When Dorothy disbanded the trio as her own career blossomed, Vivien struggled to find work. For a time, they became estranged, though by the time Dorothy had been Academy Award nominated for “Carmen Jones”, in 1954, bad feelings had been put aside. The reunion was temporary, however, as a feud broke out the following year. • When Dorothy died in 1965, a distraught Vivien had all but given up on showbusiness, though made brief comeback in 1968 with the jazz LP “The Look of Love”. By the time the 1970s arrived, Vivien had disappeared from view, living quietly under the name “Marina Rozall” in Seattle, Washington. • Vivian Dandridge who married at least five times, died in October 1991, aged 70. • •
