Zielona Lena - przedstawia wokalistkę, aktywistkę i aktorkę hollywoodzką Lenę Horne. Urodziła się w 1917 roku i żyła bardzo intensywnie ponad 90 lat. Była pierwszą czarnoskórą amerykanką z wieloletnim kontraktem filmowym w Hollywood. Po zawieszeniu kariery filmowej i rocznej przerwie występowała na Broadwayu w „Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music”, z którym zagrała 300 razy i otrzymała kilka nagród Tony i była pierwszą czarnoskórą laureatką tego wyróżnienia. Prócz tego otrzymała wiele nagród Grammy oczywiście - oraz legendarnie wykonała tytułową piosenkę z filmu „Stormy Weather”. Karierę ekranową zaczynała m.in. u młodszego brata Blanche Calloway - Caba, w krótkiej etiudzie musicalowej. W czasie koncertów dla wojska amerykańskiego (IIWŚ), gdzie segregowano widownię i sadzano z frontu niemieckich, białych jeńców wojennych, a dopiero za nimi czarnych żołnierzy - schodziła ze sceny, stawała przed pierwszym rzędem czarnoskórej części armii i śpiewała za plecami mając niemiecką część widowni. Kilkukrotnie odsuwała się z branży filmowej, z powodów złego traktowania, stereotypowego obsadzania, czarnoskórych aktorów i aktorek. Jej album „Lena Horne at the Waldorf-Astoria” był najlepiej sprzedającym się kobiecym krążkiem końca lat 50. Była jedną z wokalistek, które poruszając się w nurcie jazzowym nie improwizowała. Every day I am reminded of the sheets I collected from the USPS Legends of Hollywood stamp series—all framed—but you become so used to seeing them, there are times I have to stop myself and actually *look* at them, be in the moment, mindful, and present. But during that series, to my knowledge, there was no #DorothyDandridge (or #SidneyPoitier ... or #HarryBelafonte or #RubyDee or #OssieDavis or #DianaSands or #DiahannCarroll). (Yes! There is the incredible #LenaHorne for the Black Heritage collection! 👏🏾) Which brought my mind specifically to Dorothy Dandridge ... Fact. When you stop to think of the impact Dorothy Dandridge had with one film alone, #CARMENJONES (1954), *one film alone*, that *to this date* is talked about, referenced, and met with enthusiasm, even in clips from people who have never seen the film before, she is recognized instantly through a still shot from the film or a publicity image of her, never mind in her iconic red pencil skirt and off-the-shoulder black blouse (designed by Mary Ann Nyberg). That one film ... immortalized Dorothy Dandridge. And to use the word "icon" in association with Dandridge is not misused. Combining her work outside CARMEN JONES/films—child star, nightclub acts, television appearances—made me reflect strongly--scratch that--reminded me, confirmed, only proves something I have thought and mentioned before ... Imagine what sort of career Dandridge would have had, the scope, had the field been COMPLETELY open for her equivalent to a Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner, Audrey Hepburn? In spite of, Dorothy is still remembered, discovered, and discussed today. And despite the end of the Legends of Hollywood stamp series (as far as I know, 1995 — 2016), placing her, Dorothy Dandridge—and other Black actors of that era who made an impact, changed the game, and were so way ahead of their time, "Hollywood" still hasn't fully read the memo—on a #LegendsOfHollywood stamp is ... overdue.
Have you ever wondered who was the first African American to be elected to the Screen Actors Guild board of directors, or who was the first African American woman to be nominated for a Tony Award, or who refused to perform in front of segregated audiences, or who rallied with Medgar Evers, or who worked with Elenor Roosevelt to pass anti-lynching laws? It was all one woman, Lena Horne. Horne was born in 1917 in New York. Her career spanned more than 70 years. During that time she was no pacifist. She was a fierce advocate for civil rights for the African American community. At a time when the primary role for African American women in the entertainment industry was a domestic of some sort, she refused and worked even harder until she got her desired roles. When the military was telling her she had to perform in front of segregated troops, she funded tours for the troops with her own money. This week 100 years ago the film studio MGM - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was founded 100 years ago on April 17 1924. Leo the Lion is the icon mascot of MGM studio. Jackie the first audio Lion (1928 - 1956) and a favourite of all the eight lions to play Leo because Jackie was the Lion in the logo at the beginning of “The Wizard of Oz”. *also parodied brilliantly in the MTM enterprises logo at the end of their TV shows. I’ve know about MGM for as long as I can remember because they made “The Wizard of Oz” and for better or worse they created “Judy Garland”. Behind the Scenes of CABIN IN THE SKY✨💖 the film that jumpstarted a new kind of movie musical Made by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM), who made a majority of the best, most polished, and stylish musicals in cinema history. “Cabin in the Sky” is among their most original and daring. It was the most prestigious all-Black cast film made by a major studio, and its inventive direction by Vincente Minnelli marked a changing point in movie musicals. Although Minnelli had never directed an entire film, the producer Arthur Freed chose him to direct “Cabin in the Sky” and gave him complete creative control. Appalled by racist portrayals of Blacks in movies, Minnelli wanted the characters in this film to be dignified, and one of his first battles in doing so was with MGM’s art department, who presented him sketches of rundown looking sets for the impoverished “Jackson” home. 693. Lena Horne - "Stormy Weather" promo 45, 1981. I was all ready to listen to Lena Horne deliver her version of "Stormy Weather" as it was first released in 1943, but this promo 45 isn't exactly what I was expecting. Turns out that "Stormy Weather (Part I)" & "Stormy Weather (Part II)" are taken from the 1981 Broadway musical Lena Horne: The Lady & Her Music produced by Quincy Jones that portrayed her life starting with her show business beginnings & ending with the present day. She had been long established as a nightclub performer dating all the way back to her teenage years, encountering racism from Hollywood producers when trying to get into acting & even being blacklisted for her progressive political views in the 1950s. Lena Horne had been there & done that, but there's not nearly enough space to list all of her accomplishments in life. I'll still point out that she has Pittsburgh roots though, as she lived in the Hill District when she was a kid & learned music from some of the local musicians who resided in Little Harlem. Anyway, neither of these versions of "Stormy Monday" resemble her 1943 original, but it is probably best not to expect them to be in the first place. Part I simply updates the song to sound more contemporary while Part II employs more of a subdued approach later on in the show. Although I kinda wanted to hear young Lena Horne deliver "Stormy Weather," this 45 is acceptable for the moment & I'm not complaining. However, this post takes place in between the rainy weather we're having this morning & it's almost like the song has chased it away momentarily. I'm sure it'll be back soon though.

Happy #fontefriday , your gateway to the weekend! When I was in basic training, I ended up on the latrine crew. In fact, it was how I learned not to volunteer for anything. Ever. (Unless it involves 4-legged creatures, and then you can't go wrong.) On the second day of basic training (the first day was reserved for getting a luggage shakedown and being yelled at), we were all assembled in the dayroom and Sgt Beadle asked, "Any of you here bowlers?" A half-dozen of us raised our hands. I wasn't good at bowling, barely able to consistently break 100. But if the Air Force had some manner of bowling team--and why not?--I was eager for the brief escape. Just before learning why not to volunteer for anything, I learned an even more important lesson: never trust your drill instructor. And I think that lesson applies even if your DI has 4 legs. Sgt Beadle rounded up the people who raised our hands, and said, "Outstanding, you're going to keep my toilet bowls clean." Everybody was assigned tasks--laundry crew, dorm guards, bed aligners (not even joking about that one)--but the latrine crew had it the worst. Sgt Beadle recommended the latrine crew pick up a cheap bottle of cologne to splash down the shower walls with after washing them to exorcise the demons of 50+ men. And at the BX, there was none cheaper than Brut (by Faberge!)--it was less than $3 per bottle. For a long time, anytime I'd hear the word "Faberge," I wouldn't think elegance, I would think about cleaning a lavatory that was used as quickly as possible by 50+ fellow recruits. And how readily we were fooled by Sgt Beadle. But then I picked this album up some 6 or 7 years ago, and finally I had a positive association with Faberge. St. Harry did a lot of duets--Nana Mouskouri, Miriam Makeba, The Muppets, et al.--but none seem quite as intimate as those with Lena. This one is filled with comforting songs, the kind that wipe away memories of basic training deception and intrigue. Show: The Wiz Song: “Believe In Yourself” The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical “Wonderful Wizard of Oz” is a musical with music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls (and others) and book by William F. Brown. It is a retelling of L. Frank Baum’s children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) in the context of contemporary African-American culture. It opened on October 21, 1974, at the Morris A. Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore, and moved to Broadway’s Majestic Theatre with a new cast on January 5, 1975. The 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It was an early example of Broadway’s mainstream acceptance of works with an all-Black cast. It has had revivals in New York, London, San Diego, and the Netherlands, and a limited-run revival was presented by Encores! at New York City Center in June 2009. A big-budget film adaptation of the same name was released in 1978, with Ted Ross and Mabel King reprising their roles. A live television production of the stage version, The Wiz Live!, was broadcast on NBC on December 3, 2015, with an encore presentation on December 19 of the same year. Enjoy! “Cher’s earrings” March 1976 - I was 8 months old when my ears were pierced. Nana said “$7.35 - we bought the expensive ones for you 🥰” I’m helping my Nana sort through items as she’s finalizing her estate. We found this handwritten budget she used 47 years ago. this documented her expenses from 1976 - 1978. I love her handwriting. ❣️ 3/26/24 MY NANA 🩵💛Almost a year since her diagnosis. I’m happy to be going to visit her again in a few weeks. She wanted me to tell @aliciakeys she thinks she’ll would play a great Lena Horne in biopic.
