Jesus walked by the pool of Bethesda. The pool's known as the place of healing. Legend had it that the water would stir, & the 1st person to enter the water would be healed. For this paralyzed man, the hope of healing seemed out of reach. He had no one to help him into the water, & his limitations meant he'd never be the 1st to enter the pool. Yet, there must've been some glimmer of hope in his heart bc he was by the water. He'd been an invalid for 38 yrs. W/ each passing yr, the hope of healing faded little by little. Then came Jesus. He knew the exact number of days the man had been sick, the details of his condition, the pain in his heart, & that cynicism was setting in after yrs of disappointment. Jesus looked at the man & asked if he wanted to be healed. The man's answer had a bit if sarcasm from being jaded by life's circumstances. Of course he wanted to be healed, but he didn't have any help. His situation felt hopeless. But Jesus was going deeper w/ His question. Healing would be a big change for a man who'd been sick for so long. Did he want to give up the life of a beggar? Did he want to start a new? Jesus told him to take up his bed & walk, & instantly he was healed. We'd expect rejoicing over this man's healing from the religious leaders. Instead, they're immediately accusing the man of sin. Their charge is he's violating the Sabbath by carrying his bed. They were holding him to an impossible standard of their man-made rules. They cared more about their own legalistic rules than God's law. They were also upset Jesus healed on the Sabbath. Jesus' response only angered them more. Jesus was doing the work of this Father. Their empty religion cared more about appearances then about the souls of people, & Jesus wouldn't tolerate false religion. So they sought to kill Jesus. Jesus knows who we are, what we're facing, & the pain that's part of our stories, & He knows just how long that pain's been part of our story. He comes near us in our brokenness when no one else does. He also asks the hard question of if we want to be healed. Following Jesus will cost us everything. But it's always worth it. He heals what's hidden & broken- what no one else can see.

Recap time: Is your life being transformed to be more like Jesus? Do you want to be healed? Jesus asks this question of the invalid man by the Bethesda Pool in Jerusalem. The man had been coming to the pool for 38 years, believing that if he could somehow get into the pool, he would be healed. When Jesus asked him if he wanted to be healed, he gave excuses as to why he couldn’t be. No one would help him, someone else got in first, etc. He didn’t take responsibility for his own healing. Jesus commanded him to take up his mat and walk, and he was cured. The healing took place on the Sabbath, so when the Pharisees accused him of working (carrying his mat) on the Sabbath, he blamed Jesus for telling him to carry his mat. He was not grateful and not willing to do whatever it took to be healed. It is that way with our own healing. We have to take responsibility for our healing and growth and do whatever it takes and make whatever changes are necessary, with no more excuses. This applies to our physical and our spiritual healing. God will transform us. The Word of God speaks and things change. The Pharisees had made these rules to make them seem “better than” other people. People still do this today. Jesus’ answer to the question of why He was healing on the Sabbath was that His Father, God, was working, so He also was working (John 5:18 paraphrased). God never rests. He is always working toward our good. Many people will do whatever it takes to heal their physical body, which will eventually die. How much more important is it for your soul, which will live forever, to be healed and to grow? Would you do whatever it takes for your soul to be healed? God wants the best possible for you. Sometimes, we might say we want to get better. Obviously. Who wouldn’t want to be better? But there’s a subconscious part of us, hidden deep inside, that’s not so sure or rather that’s kind of comfortable with our current situation. It’s like, we’re used to it, and change can be scary. So, even though we say we want to heal, there’s a little voice inside saying, „Do we really?“ And then there are the emotional attachments we’ve formed with our pain or suffering. It might sound weird, but sometimes we get attached to feeling down, hurt and victimized. It’s almost like it has become our identity, a part of who we are. So, even if we want to heal, there’s our emotional baggage holding us back. And then, there’s the fear of what comes after healing. Being healthy often means taking on new responsibilities, changing our lives, and that can be scary. So, even though we want to feel better, we might hesitate because we don’t know what comes next. Maybe we feel that we should be ready to heal, but in fact we’re not at all. Healing is a process that involves our body, mind, and emotions, and sometimes, there’s an inner struggle going on that we need to address alongside our physical or emotional recovery. 🌞 ITS YOUR TURN💪 Good Friday morning, it's time for another “Morning with Nancy” message to kickstart your day. Often, we find ourselves succumbing to various illnesses, whether it's alcoholism, heart trouble, paralysis, addiction, or immorality. These challenges can turn us into psychological and spiritual invalids, causing us to withdraw, avoid responsibilities, and become increasingly self-centered as we seek sympathy from others. In John 5:5-8, we encounter "a certain man," a single individual amidst a vast crowd. And Jesus saw him. You see, Jesus sees and cares for each person, whether it's Nicodemus, the woman at the well, this needy man, or you and me. This man had been sick for thirty-eight years, and his situation seemed utterly hopeless. He had given in to his illness, becoming a prisoner of his own despair. But my brothers and sisters, none of us can heal ourselves or our fellow man. We are all sick, helpless, and on the verge of perishing. However, there is a GREAT PHYSICIAN who sticks closer than a brother, who died for our sins so that we may be healed from our sin-sick souls. Today, Jesus is speaking to us, (IT'S YOUR TURN), asking, "Do you want to be made whole?" Today, we must fix our eyes on Him and not the "pool" of our problems. Today, let's shift our focus from our troubles and place them on the Problem Solver Himself. Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart. IT'S YOUR TURN! Take up your bed and walk! Misquoted, The Bible Doesn’t Say That series continues. • When a biblical truth gets twisted, it can lead to damaging beliefs and behavior. Today we look at “time heals all wounds”. The statement is meant to give hope, but time is not a healing agent. There is no antidote to pain. Time can even cover up our wounds, but they are still there. • Pain will come, but you don’t have to live with those wounds. Biblical healing heals the whole person, body, soul, and spirit. We can choose not to carry the wounds anymore. God sent a healer to restore our health, heal the broken hearted; it’s one of the primary reasons Jesus came. Jeremiah 30:17 Do you want to be healed? • Some people try to bury the hurt. Some people wear the hurt. If you’re not willing to let go of your past, you can’t heal from it. They are good but there is something powerful that can either be received or rejected, it’s LOVE not based on how someone treats me. That’s what I struggle with. To be like Jesus. That’s hard stuff. Y’all knew that right? My biggest struggle: submitting to Jesus Christ when people close to me hurt me. But Jesus did exactly that, even when hung on a cross with verbal abuse thrown at Him. Grateful today for that lifetime friend who brought flowers and fish (the fun kind—don’t judge) and who lingers over iced tea and Diet Coke who laughs and cries at the fires we have walked through, the loss we endured, coming to the end of ourselves and being proud of our efforts and frustrated over falling while getting back up and continuing to work to become holy and whole with our eyes being opened to the hurt and brokenness of those around us (trying to make their way too) yet still trusting and knowing God is right beside us as we see cardinals land to give us the sign we prayed for—to be brave in the moment, to remain strong in uncertainty—and still laugh the loudest and cry the hardest and hug 5 more times before we say goodbye because lingering and listening to one another for hours is good for the soul and can never be enough time when you are sitting in the company of a safe and sacred friend. May we treasure those moments because they don’t come often enough. May we choose to linger. May we be that kind of friend. +Grateful for poetic license to use one long lingering sentence to describe the moment being with said friend. It’s the kind of moment when you start talking and you never know where one sentence started and the other one ended, yet we still found a way to respectfully and patiently listen to what was hiding in the heart of the treasured sometimes hurting but very much healing friend. Thank you God for giving me that kind of lifetime friend.

A decade ago, my “unattainable dream” was simply to sleep, move, and eat without agony. My vision of heaven was as a giant exit button rather than a joyful union. My dreams were little more than a desperate cry for release. Slowly, God helped me relax my clenched fists and open my eyes. I had been in a defensive posture for so long that dreaming again was as terrifying as standing on the precipice of an ocean cliff… But that terror eventually gave way to relief as the healing door was opened. The process was not easy or quick. But I have been able to embrace a return of dreams, a restoration of youthfulness, and a renewed longing for Christ. My physical healing was a catalyst to every other kind of healing. I didn’t know it was impossible. I was afraid to begin. Too tired to try. And yet… Here I am. I invite you to crawl to the door of possibility… where you can learn to dream again. What is your dream? It’s okay if it’s small. I wanted to be able to eat a meal and get out of bed. Write it down. Say it out loud. Surrender it to God… and let Him lead you. It’s a privilege to walk and pray with you. Let’s do this. Oh, my goodness! So true! So often we not only offer Misery a chair, but we give it the guest room and offer flowers & fine wine! 🤣 This sentiment reminds me of a message several years ago at church, one that I think about often. Jesus asked the man at the pool of Bethesda, "Do you want to be healed?" It seems like a silly question. But do we want to be free of our Misery? What are we doing to help Misery find the door? Whatever form Misery takes in our life and in our mind, we have to take some responsibility for helping it vacate the premises! There are many things we can't control in our current world circumstances, but there are many things we can control. How much Misery are we chosing to allow to stay? What Misery do we need to send packing? It's worth thinking about. If you want someone to explore that with you, I am here with an open mind, listening ears, and a loving heart. I ask again... March 29, 2022 ================ Today's Gospel tells a story that is both happy and sad. Happy because it shows the depth of Christ's mercy and love -- how He heals out of compassion even if we do not ask. But it's sad because it also shows how we sometimes care about the wrong things. We rejoice over healing, but fail to recognize that the Healer is far more valuable — that a RELATIONSHIP with Him is what we must desire above all. Today, let's try to reflect on where we stand with regard to knowing our Healer and Lord, Jesus Christ. Let's remember His compassion and love for us — that even if we don't ask Him and would rather wallow in self-pity saying "I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up" (Jn 5:7 NABRE), He makes us well. In thanks for Him and all that He has done and will do, let's try to get to know Him. Let's learn Who He really is and what He really wants of our hearts. We go beyond rejoicing over our healing and devote ourselves to a relationship with the Healer. Through prayer, through study, through following Him and His Way daily, let's build a relationship with Christ. ================ Jesus, thank You for healing me. You know what I need and give it even before I know what it is. Thank You for that. And yet I ask Lord, that You help me go beyond it. Help me celebrate not only fact that I have been healed, but also that You have shown me how much You love me through it. May it make me want to get to know You more. “Gail, pick up your mat and walk!” These are the words I heard this morning when I woke. I’ve been laying on my mat, close to the pool of healing, feeling unable to reach it. I kind of found comfort in the discomfort of my mat. Maybe some of you can relate? The longer I have laid on my mat of discomfort, the more familiar it has become. I’m not sure how I got on this mat. Maybe it was Covid, maybe it was entering our season of Ryan’s birthday and Ryan’s death, maybe it was my kids moving away, maybe it was……..Maybe it was legit. But I have had enough of it. I want to be renewed by his spirit and walk in the joy of my salvation. I want to walk in the blessing of his healing. Jesus asks the man at the pool, on the mat, “Do you want to be healed?” The man says, “ I have no one to help me!” Jesus was the only one necessary. His answer was simple. “Pick up your mat and walk!” Choose it, dude! Let me heal you! It wasn’t until Jesus showed up on the scene that healing could take place. No amount of self will, self determination, could get him to the pool that he thought would heal him. He kept crawling and got nowhere. Only Jesus. So today I am picking up my mat. I am not throwing my mat away because my mat is what makes me who I am today. But I am taking my mat with me and I am walking into The joy of my salvation. I am going to go to church, and be refreshed. Does anybody else need to pick up their mat and choose to walk into God’s healing today? “Jesus saw him lying there and knew the man had been sick a long time. Jesus said to him, “Would you like to be healed?” John 5:6 This healing isn't just physical, although Jesus did physically heal this man after 38 years, but it goes much deeper. Because His love for us is much more intimate.. So why did He have to ask this question? I used to get so frustrated when I would read questions that Jesus would ask even though He already knew the answer. Overtime I began to see that He asked the question not for Himself but for those who were listening. Jesus asks questions so the relationship we have with him can become deeper. By not telling us exactly what we need to do individually, He's encouraging us to make it more personal with Him. Jesus calls us out of our comfort zone where we’ve merely learned to cope with the sins that consume us. Francine River said "We're often more comfortable in captivity than in freedom. Even though captivity leads to death." There is a level of comfort I clung to in order to cope with things rather than conquer them. But God has graciously broken down those walls and revealed to me that He doesn't want me to cope with my sin, but to conquer it! The Lord has asked me time and time again “would you like to be healed?” and for years I misunderstood, shrugged it off or intentionally bypassed it altogether. But God is good! And His redeeming love has proved true in my own life. When I surrendered my control (even though I really don't have any) and understood no matter how painful the healing will be, that YES, I do want to be healed. Then, God gently began the healing process. Although being ‘healed’ is a process, it’s the journey where we learn and grow the most! It’s not always pretty, easy or pain-free, but it’s allowed me to graciously move towards conquering with Christ to true and abundant healing. Merry Christmas!!! Surround yourself with people who are solutions oriented- not around people who continually discuss people and problems. Alrighty, I could never be an influencer, because I never keep up on posting lol Today I watched season 2 episode 4 of THE CHOSEN and my LOVED how they showed the miracle of the Savior healing Jesse’s lameness. (45:00) He asked him, “Do you want to be healed?” and Jesse replied asking if He would help him into the water to be healed, saying he’s had a bad day, complaining that others wouldn’t help him, expressing his struggle through the years trying to do so and failing due to others stepping in ahead of him…then Jesus stops him and says, “Look at me, that’s not what I asked. I’m not asking you about who’s helping you, who’s not helping, or who’s getting in your way. I’m asking about YOU.” Jessie responds saying, “I’ve tried.” Jesus then consoles him saying, “For a long time. I know, and you don’t want false hope again, I understand. But this pool, it has nothing for you. It means nothing, and you know it. But you’re still here. Why?” Jessie, “I don’t know.” Jesus, “You don’t need this pool. You only need me. So, do you want to be healed? Let’s go, pick up your mat and walk.” I feel this is so relatable. Many times we want something and spend so much time trying to achieve it to no avail. Sometimes our focus is so narrow on that one thing that we don’t realize that the Lord is putting other things in our lives to help us achieve our true desire. When He asks us why we are stuck in the same place, we respond with “I don’t know” because we have lost sight of our true goal. Wherever we are at in life or our goals, the Lord will always put His hands in our lives and desires to help us. The vain things of the world aren’t what are going to make us whole. WE NEED HIM. He wants to know the desires of our hearts. If we FOCUS ON HIM, everything else will fall into place. #thechosen #focusonhim #doyouwanttobehealed
This has to be one of the most puzzling questions Jesus ever asked. In John 5, as Jesus is at the pool of Bethesda, he sees a man who had been unable to walk for 38 years. This man had long waited by the water of the pool hoping for a miracle that would bring him the healing he so desperately desired. The man obviously wanted healing. So why did Jesus ask the question? I believe the answer lies in a need to change this man’s focus from the water of the pool to the source of the water of life, Jesus Himself. The water of the pool was a false trail. The author of life and truth and healing is standing right in front of this man. Once he sets his eyes upon Jesus…Once he begins to interact with the Son of God, healing takes place. I believe Jesus would ask many in our world this same question. Do you want to be healed? Do you want true deliverance from sin? Oh, my goodness! So true! So often we not only offer Misery a chair, but we give it the guest room and offer flowers & fine wine! 🤣 This sentiment reminds me of a message our pastor preached a couple of years ago, one that I think about often. Jesus asked the man at the pool of Bethesda, "Do you want to be healed?" It seems like a silly question. But do we want to be free of our Misery? What are we doing to help Misery find the door? Whatever form Misery takes in our life, we have to take some responsibility for helping it vacate the premises! There are many things we can't control in our current world circumstances, but there are many things we can control. How much Misery are we choosing to allow to stay? What Misery do we need to send packing? It's worth thinking about. If the challenge seems too big, too daunting, to handle alone, then get an accountability partner to stand with you as you look Misery dead in the eye and say, "Get out, Misery! I always arrive at these readings with an element of surprise, like I haven’t noticed what’s going on in the story till suddenly we are all arriving in Jerusalem with crowds of others. I walked this route, Palm Sunday two years ago with more than a thousand singing and cheering pilgrims. Small children selling palms and random branches, and a slow and steady pace under a sun too intense for this early in the year. It strikes me that The way of the cross started much before the entry into Jerusalem. A lot like me, those cheering had only joined for the culmination of the story, only Mary was left who had watched the whole unfolding from the beginning. Hosanna they are all crying out as my king, our king, passed by on a donkey. It’s not ‘Praise you ‘ they are crying out but ‘Save us, please save us’ And save us He did. Things turn ugly in less than five days. It probably began with one person starting the turn, one soul with an idea of how this King should save them and this wasn’t what they’d ordered. One voice of dissent that is then bleated in echo. I Imagine that it was one person who assumed the issue was with ‘them’ that the last thing they needed saving from was there own attachments and desires. I also realise that at any given time that person is me. It takes just the one person to turn a crowd. We are at times just sheep, but sheep who have a remit for our Shepherd. Perhaps we prefer the manipulated hired kind. Jesus saves us first from ourselves, the external troubles bear no real threat in comparison... here’s the crunch though, are we wanting to be rescued? Are we ready to allow the sword of the word to dismember those things we use to bring distraction, comfort and avoidance? I pray we are. I pray that as Jesus gazes at us and asks “Do you want to be well?” We can answer with an unconditional yes. That we don’t expect that hard won freedom to fit our vision but His. Have a blessed Holy week, may the victory won for your soul touch each moment of this special time, may your Hosannahs be heard and may your heart be ready to receive the freedom you cry out for. #holyweek #palmsunday #doyouwanttobehealed #amaranthine

“Do you want to be healed?... Rise!” (v 6b, 8a) A reflection on John 5:1-18 In Jerusalem, a man has been sick for 38 years. He sits by the pool in hopes of receiving healing, but he can’t get there in time. He needs someone to help, and no one has. Jesus sees him and sees the resignation and despair on the man’s face. While it should be obvious, Jesus still asks: “Do you want to be healed?” The man doesn’t answer his question, but rather launches into an explanation: “I have no man to put me into the pool…” (v 7). But that’s not what Jesus asked for. While others may be distracted by the man’s external suffering, Jesus looks straight to the heart. He has come to show us the Father’s heart, and the Father’s heart is for us to be healed. Now, He looks into my heart. Do I want to be healed? Some of the wounds I have been nursing are years old, perhaps even older than this man’s sickness. I know they are there; I know I can’t heal them on my own. Yet despite the ache and pain that they continue to cause, I have become complacent and comfortable with them. Perhaps they allow me to continue in a pattern of sin, or perhaps the idea of allowing someone into those very deepest places is too terrifying, too much. But Jesus looks at me with the same tenderness he had for the sick man. “Do you want to be healed?” And all of a sudden, I am faced with a power that is stronger than my weakness, a power that can reach down into those deep places and tear out the bad roots, the lies, the strongholds, and bring healing to my heart. And it is terrifying. But then I hear him say, “Rise.” And I am flooded with peace as I stand. I rise, and I know that those wounds no longer define me. They are a part of the story but not the end. I stand in my new identity as beloved, and I am ready to walk. Yes, Lord Jesus, I do want to be healed. Heal me. Give me the strength to receive your healing and then to stand and walk in the Father’s Love.
