Drawn honeycomb is gold to beekeepers. This year we’re trying something new we picked up from Kaymon Reynolds of Tennessee’s Bees. We pulled our spring honey from our production colonies then placed a deep box above the queen excluder and put one frame of brood along with 9 frames of foundation and started to feed them. Three wee dots visible through the wax comb are varroa mites inhabiting the space where a drone baby is growing on the other side of the frame. The mites find the male babies ideal; they take longer to become adult bees so they have more time to ‘mitiply’.

Highlights from yesterday's hive inspection 🐝💛 (19.06.22) The hive has exploded over the past couple of weeks! We couldn't believe how much has changes in the hive in such a short space of time!💥🙈 •First off, the Queen is still laying well and there seems to be loads of eggs, larvae and capped brood. All but one frame in the brood foundation is now full! 💛💛🐝 •We've started to notices, in the drawn comb, the difference colours of pollen forming which was very exiting to see!👀 As well as oodles and oodles of capped honey!🍯 ❓️There appears to be a few Queen cells being made which we were a little concerned about (Been as it is our first year, we are still learning)... They don't appear to be charged or capped and didn't look to have eggs in. We have left the old frames out to be robbed by other bees and insects. It’s an easy way to get things cleaned up. The drawn comb can be put in our new hives and eventually filled up with honey. I’ve heard of beekeepers spilling honey in their vehicle…wonder how the heck you would clean up that mess? Let the bees do it! Leave your trunk open at your next hive inspection! Prepping for installation. When dealing with packages, it’s always a great idea to have a drawn frame of comb for the queen the be able to start laying in right away, and a rubber band handy to hold the queen cage to a frame. I think it’s also noteworthy to say that your frames of drawn comb don’t have to be perfect. In fact on of these frames had a bit of mold and another had fallen victim to wax moths. A before and after look at new foundation, the wax sheet used in wooden frames to give bees a headstart making comb. The foundation gets “drawn out” by worker bees. The new wax foundation we use in our frames has a hexagonal pattern stamped on it. The bees add wax their own wax to make comb for egg laying and for storing honey and pollen. The younger bees are given this task, ones that have never left the hive. You can tell they are young bees because they are more golden colored and the black bands across the abdomen are not dark. Worker bees (females) have glands that produce wax from sugar. Tiny flakes are oozed from their abdomens. The flakes, or scales, are softened by chewing and then added to the comb. It takes a lot of resources (time and food) for bees to produce wax. That’s the reason honeycomb is reused after the honey has been extracted. I got to spend some time in my Top Bar today, in town, down along the river's edge. Interestingly, many frames were divided vertically - one side solid drone brood and the other side solid worker brood. (Photos 1 and 2). Also surprising, out of the first 18 bars, 15 are brood frames!!! Also, interestingly, they've filled three frames with solid nectar, randomly interspersed inside the brood nest. Just over two weeks ago when we did our split, we added some foundation-less frames to the upper brood box and removed the honey super. Nearly 6 frames of bees! Just conducted the first inspection of our own hive! The little nucleus colony is taking off, with lots of drawn comb and almost a gallon of syrup consumed. One thing I noticed is that despite many foragers bringing back pollen, there’s not a lot of stored bee bread… I’ll have to keep an eye on that. I’ve seen it thousands of times but it still blows my mind how precise the construction of drawn comb is. They produce the wax themselves and use no tools to measure and shape the hexagonal cells other than their legs/feet & mandibles. The hexagon pattern is also more efficient than any other shape pattern allowing for the most storage use across the frame. Hundreds of thousands of cells created throughout the hive. I have yet to see a honey bee reading a geometry book or down at the technical school learning building trades. It’s just part of their blueprint, their never ending drive to expand, survive & thrive. Truly a marvel and wonder of the world. The two hives I started with this spring was my first hive I bought in 2018 and the other hive I bought in 2019. Neither hive was treated with anything. They both came out running this spring and I was able to split them and make 5 more hives. In total I have 7 hives at this yard. 3 are ducked off away in the woods they have a lil 😡 in them lol. As I stated I’m learning to be more hands off and let nature be nature. When I opened up that hive I saw all types of different insects. A few years back my initial thought would be to kill everything that’s not a honeybee but as time goes on and connecting more to nature I let nature handle it. I don’t know what’s bad and what’s good. I don’t know what role that insect or “pests” plays in the hive so I let it be. I can’t control nature. I know this is always a touchy subject when it comes to bees but hey everybody has their way of doing things. The less hands off when it comes to nature the better.

So this was the amount of honey and larvae my swarm had managed to produce, as you can see there was a significant drop in numbers where the bees were not able to replace workers at the rate they were dying. The capped honeycomb (looks like biscuit crumb) has baby bees growing inside.
