Where attention goes, neural firing flows, and neural connection grows This is why compassion based mindfulness is the absolute core of everything I teach If you cannot become aware of where your attention is currently going, your autopilot thinking, behavioural, meaning making and feeling habits, you will not realise just how influential you are in constructing your daily experiences When we learn that we have influence in how and where we place our attention, it gives us agency to choose what we focus on What we focus on will grow. What are you focusing on? What you are scared of? What you can’t do? What others are doing or not doing? Are you addicted to the ‘what’s wrong’ attention? These are all very normal in mind body conditions and trauma, because our brains are threat seeking machines. We have to learn to gain influence over our mind, to change our neural pathways and brain, to create a life we love and feel safer and better day to day. Painful sensations are USEFUL information. With painful sensations, our bodies can alert us to physical and emotional danger. They can show us when our boundaries are being violated and point out when we are unconsciously reminded of challenging past events. They can help us realize that we are feeling worried or anxious, we need a break, we need to rest, and more. 👉 But here's the secret most people don't know: Sometimes, sensations portray are an accurate reflection of reality. Other times, they do not. The body may experience painful sensations when the brain BELIEVES you are in physical or emotional danger, even if that is not the case. This is why listening to the body's sensations is SO IMPORTANT. When we listen, we can identify what the message is. Ongelooflijk! Wat heeft de Stressortherapie een vlucht genomen! Een paar jaar geleden deden we nog onze eerste pilot in de praktijkruimte van Saskia de Bruin (schrijfster van de boeken @wegvandepijn en SOLK) en klungelden we met onze powerpoint. Nu neemt @sjak.jansen alles op met 6 microfoons en een camera die Marten en mij kan volgen (en zodat onze cursisten ook nog als Marten met super pensioen gaat nog van hem kunnen leren). En daarnaast worden de deelnemers en wij ondersteund door Brigith van @feelenleef inde rol van co-trainer. Het is zo bizar om zo'n professionalisering mee te maken. Het is van een schattige presentatie met de beste bedoelingen overgegaan naar een volwaardige opleiding. En als ik dan zie hoe de cursisten (en Marten zelf) stralen, hoe de stof nu echt landt en hoe de proef-cliënten verschil merken in hun klachten, dan kan ik alleen maar zeggen: Wat is dit gaaf!! Ik ben Marten en alle cursisten zo ongelooflijk dankbaar voor deze prachtige reis naar onze missie: zo veel mogelijk mensen klachtenvrij. Die reis is die al van start is en tegelijkertijd voelt het als een bloemknop die zich nog verder kan ontvouwen tot volle bloei. Liefs en een dikke knuffel!

✹ Self criticism is a maladaptive coping mechanism, that we often learn as children & from society, attempting to keep us safe. ✹ Self compassion is what actually keeps us feeling safe. ✹ Ego speaks through judgement and comparison. True self speaks through intuition and curiosity. ✹ Self criticism / negative self talk increases tension and is felt as danger to the primitive brain. This can put the brain on high alert and activate the sympathetic nervous system to produce actual pain signals in the body! Yes, I’m talking about your back, ankle, foot, neck, knee, shoulder, IBS, headache etc pain! ✹ Bringing curiosity and self compassion to the way we speak to ourselves is a way of moving toward safety in the Bodymind. Attempting to reduce our negative self talk is an effective way to lessen the fight or flight response that people are chronically stuck in when experiencing Mindbody symptoms. ✹ When we address negative self talk, the True Self feels seen and heard. This activates the parasympathetic / rest & digest state, and threat physiology & neuroplastic pain signals begin to decrease. ✹ So, take a few moments out of your day to notice the trance of the ego, and move toward the safety by practicing this awareness of the higher self and what kind of voice you speak to yourself with. ✹ What does your intuition tell you? What in your life are you trying to control? 'Het zit allemaal tussen je oren.' Deze opmerking heb je vast al weleens gehoord, als jij last hebt van langdurige klachten. Mensen vinden het moeilijk te geloven dat je je Ă©cht niet goed voelt. Want je ziet er nou eenmaal niet ziek uit. 'Je moet je er gewoon niet zo druk om maken. Je hebt teveel stress.' Is ook nog zo'n mooi goedbedoeld advies. Ik kon er heel verdrietig en boos van worden als mensen dit zeiden. Want ik ben toch niet gek? Waarom gelooft niemand mij? Maar deze beide uitspraken bevatten toch een kern van waarheid. Het ontstaan van je klachten zit wel degelijk tussen je oren, namelijk in je brein. En dat betekent niet dat je gek bent, of je aanstelt. Want die pijn en klachten zijn echt en die zitten echt in je lichaam. Maar het ontstaan daarvan kan een hele andere oorzaak hebben. Als je langdurig emoties onbewust onderdrukt, ontstaat er een disregulatie in het limbisch systeem in het brein. Dit kan disfuncties geven in allerlei verschillende gebieden in het lichaam. This is a big statement, but recent studies show that Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) and similar neuroplasticity therapies can reverse most chronic pain conditions by helping us understand the actual cause of our pain, shifting our nervous system out of chronic fight or flight, and by retraining our brain. Traditionally, pain treatment focuses on the area where pain is felt. This works well for acute pain. But tissues heal, and if pain sticks around past the 3-6 months mark (that's when tissue healing is complete), the pain story changes! And the treatment approach needs to change as well! We now know that most chronic pain isn’t caused by underlying structural problems, meaning that the pain is often not - or no longer - driven by a physical issue in the body. So where is the pain coming from if not from the hurting body? ​ Modern pain science shows that up to 88 % of chronic pain is caused by neural pathways that our brain has learned and is now defaulting to and the misfiring of pain circuits. We also speak of a sensitized nervous system, 'Primary Chronic Pain', 'Neuroplastic Pain' or "Mindbody Syndrome (TMS)'. ​ In simpler terms, our brain is making a mistake, and the good news is that this mistake can be corrected by retraining and rewiring the brain. Shame is an unpleasant emotion based in beliefs that we are worthless, unlovable, or inherently broken. How true do the following statements feel to you? I am a good person. I love myself. If you feel resistance to those statements then you then you likely have some internalized shame. Shame is common for people in chronic pain because we tend to be perfectionistic people-pleasers that may use shame as a motivator to uphold our own impossible standards for ourselves. Shame may have served as a helpful defense mechanism in the past to keep us safe. Maybe it helped us gain some sense of control over our own actions and beliefs in an environment where we felt unsafe. But we don’t need it anymore. We can counter shame with the same strategies we use for chronic pain. In the mindbody healing space, we talk a lot about brain rewiring and doing the 'work' required to heal. However there are other essential aspects to healing that we often miss out on - one of them being the pursuit of joy and peace. When I discovered MindBody Syndrome, I remember going to the beach and to the woodland almost every single day. Somehow, I knew that was what my body and mind required. I remember reading Dr Sarno's book, Healing Back Pain on the beach... Simply trusting that it would help, as many others had claimed. I owe it to the outdoors that I recovered from chronic pain so fast... Just as much as I owe it to Dr Sarno and TMS work. But I didn't quite realize this until I slipped into depression and had other new symptoms years later. I left the informal, outdoor component out of my healing and it was way way harder! I also started to notice that those clients who spent lots of time indoors or who didn't pursue any enjoyable activities were having a very hard time recovering... And so today I insist - to myself and to others - that spending time out, plus giving yourself a good dose of social interaction are required to heal. And do NOT wait to get better before you start pursuing joy... Do it in your own way - in a way that feels less pressured to you and that is feasible for your symptoms. Do it DESPITE symptoms. ✹ Happy Earth Day! ✹ Give yourself the gift of nature’s energetic healing force. Spring is here (in Canada), and it’s now time to get outside and take in all the sights, smells, and sounds. Nature is incredibly healing and has countless health benefits. Being in nature tones the vagus nerve which regulates the nervous system, thereby lowering or eliminates the signals of neuroplastic pain. Earthing or grounding takes out negative ions from the body and the earth sends positive ions & electrons into the body, reducing inflammation & stress chemicals in the body. You can do this with your feet in the grass, or your face & hands on a tree if the ground is too cold. Attempt skin to nature contact to receive the benefits. I know how difficult it is to know who to trust and where to turn when you’re suffering, it can be so overwhelming. Feeling aligned with the folks you choose to follow or work with and feeling safe around them and trust in what they teach, is typically a good intuitive sign to lean into. Creating a feeling of safety and resonance is so important to me, before we get into any of the “work” and is a key part of everything I share in this space. It’s hard to communicate how these practices can transform your health and your life. I try in my own words but sometimes I get that it can sound too good to be true, so I’ll be sharing some more insight from my course participants, yoga school members, coaching clients and other self-healers in this community that I help. I think it’s important to share more of the real effects so that I’m not just spinning you a story of my own healing, which no doubt can get repetitive. Wanneer ben je nou eigenlijk hersteld? Ik vind het eigenlijk maar een moeilijk woord. Ben ik hersteld als ik nooit meer klachten heb? Dat is volgens mij niet realistisch. Iedereen heeft wel eens ergens last van. Dat is menselijk. Gisteren was ik bij de 'Hersteld high tea' van @lief.klein.leven Mijn eerste gedachte was: kan ik wel gaan? Ben ik wel genoeg hersteld? Ik voel me soms een beetje nep. Een soort fraudeur als ik tussen de herstelde mensen zou gaan zitten. Want ik voel soms heus nog wel eens wat en dat hoort toch niet? Maar wanneer ben je dan wel hersteld? Voor mij was dat denk ik nu, het punt dat ik van overleven naar leven ging. Ik had mijn leven eigenlijk on hold gezet. 'Zo lang ik niet beter ben, kan ik niet verder met mijn leven.' Dat gevoel had ik echt. Niks was meer leuk, alle dagen waren slecht, want ik had klachten. Pas toen ik kon zien, dat je eigenlijk best goede dagen kunt hebben, ondanks de klachten, kon ik het meer loslaten. En de klachten volgden. Ik liet ze los. En zijn er nu nog weleens klachten? Zeker. Ik ben een mens. Maar ik weet nu dat die klachten mij iets willen vertellen. Dus dan sta ik even stil en luister ik naar mijn lichaam. Zo kun je de klachten zien als een raadgever. Ze zijn niet meer mijn vijand. Hand in hand kun je ermee door het leven gaan. En eigenlijk ben je dan veel meer dan hersteld. Je bent beter. In heel veel opzichten. This is a great book that I recommend if you are suffering from chronic pain. More and more studies are showing that the majority of chronic pain suffered worldwide are NOT due to a physical cause, a structural problem in the body but rather learned neural pathways in the brain. Essentially the nervous system gets disrupted and faulty pain signals are sent out and most people are led to believe that there is something wrong in the body like a physical cause. But this is not the case. The underlying reasons are linked to repressed emotions, stress, perhaps some trauma which are responsible for the pain and then the pain/fear cycle that ensues is what keeps the pain persisting. I have not just read this in a book. I am a recoverer myself after 21 years of debilitating back pain. Back pain where my MRI scan showed a severely herniated disc! Back pain that needed surgery! More on this later though. To recover from neural pathway pain, also referred to as TMS, mind body pain and neuroplastic pain, it takes a different approach. No more focussing on the part where the pain is but instead approaching the healing through the nervous system. Just as neural pathway pain can be learned, it can also be UNlearned.
