Before I got diagnosed with my autoimmune disease in 2016, 100% of my choices in life were sending cues of danger and threat to my nervous system. My nervous system was always in a state of hyper and hypo arousal. I was either extremely anxious or completely shutdown. I was experiencing over 40+ chronic symptoms before my rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis, and the extreme inflammation that took over my whole body. What I know now is that my mind|body systems experienced wear and tear because my system didnât feel safe to initiate recovery, growth, and restoration from all the chronic and traumatic stress my body was under for most of my life. The body can only heal in a state of safety and connection. It cannot heal in protection and disconnection. Today, every choice I make is dedicated to my nervous systemâs resiliency. It is a priority to make sure my system can have access to safety (when itâs a real option for it), so my body can continue to heal from a lifetime of danger and threat.

This modality teaches us the art of self regulation by harnessing something known as the neurogenic tremor mechanism, innate in the animal kingdom as well as in humans. Now, does this mean that one outcome isnât preferable to another? Of course not. Thereâs often going to be one outcome thatâs more desirable. But thereâs a difference between telling yourself, âOne outcome is great and the other is a disaster,â and âBoth outcomes are fine, though one might be better.â One is terrifying while the other one is reassuring. Telling yourself âItâs going to be okay either wayâ comforts your brain on a fundamental level, letting it know that youâre not in danger. Of course, 1 percent of the time, it really isnât going to be okay either way. But 99 percent of the time, it really is going to be okay either way. The coping strategies you might be using in your life make so much sense. A coping strategy is anything that youâve found to mask or numb the dysregulation you might be experiencing. Here are just a few examples of coping strategies: Overworking Under or over eating Drinking alcohol in excess Online shopping or over spending Exercising beyond your bodyâs limits Watching TV or using social media to numb Please know that all of these things are brilliant, beautiful things you found to survive. They supported you to not have to be with the pain, but these patterns can also cause their own suffering. The good news is that you donât have to stay stuck here. Our healing work is to begin addressing the underlying dysregulation. We do that by replacing our coping strategies with regulating resources. A regulating resource is anything that helps you to feel more present, safe, and connected, like: going for a walk, playing with a pet, calling a friend, yoga, etc. What makes regulating resources so powerful is that they actually SHIFT our experience and discharge that activation/dysregulation. The more you begin turning toward regulating resources first, the more you actually change whatâs happening in your nervous system (rather than just masking it). And when we do that, weâll often find we donât need to use those coping strategies anymore. When I first heard about brain re-training for chronic pain, it sounded like such a mammoth, complex and mystifying task! I was overwhelmed and didnât know where to begin. But over time and with trial and error, I was able to simplify the approach to 4 key steps â and to focus on these whenever I felt overwhelmed by the 'work' of healing. Here are the steps I followed: - RECOGNIZE fearful, hyper-focused thoughts with compassion â then kindly pause this thought train - REASSURE my brain that my symptoms were NOT dangerous â they were the result of learnt neural pathways - and I COULD and WOULD unlearn them - REDIRECT my attention towards a pleasant (or neutral) thought, sensation or activity that would signal safety to my nervous system - REPEAT this process over and over - with consistency, patience and trust in the power of neuroplasticity and my ability to rewire neural pathways Brain re-training became a powerful technique within my recovery toolkit â perhaps the one that made the greatest impact on my recovery. The physical sensations and low frequency emotions that were imprinted during a trauma are experienced not as memories but as disruptive physical symptoms in the present. In order to regain control over your self you need to revisit the trauma in a safe space. In order to change you need to open yourself up to your inner experiences. Through breath and body work we can shed light on the deepest layers. By dropping into the body and silencing our thoughts we allow our subconscious mind to show us what we need to look at so we can evolve towards our authentic self in a healthy and natural way. Do I have to believe this is mindbody pain in order to heal? The short answer: Belief is a process. Let it grow! Those of us trying to heal from chronic pain tend to get very hung up on belief. We are often told that belief is essential, and that we won't heal if we don't believe 100% I believe that developing your belief is part of the process of healing, and it doesn't matter if you are still struggling with this. There are levels of belief along the way, and you need to work your way through them. >The belief that chronic pain can be caused by psychological factors >The belief that it's possible to heal from chronic pain >The belief that your issues are caused by psychological factors >The belief that YOU can heal from chronic pain For some people, it may take some time to develop all of these beliefs, and that's okay. Your belief will get stronger as you do the work. My tips for belief: ONE: Affirmations Start with what you're willing to believe, that can be a lot easier. Try saying it out loud for yourself and see if you can feel the truth in the statement. For example: "I am willing to believe that my pain is a mindbody issue." "I am willing to believe that I can be pain free." Find an affirmation that sits right for you now, and repeat it to yourself several times a day. TWO: Keep an evidence sheet Look at the connection between stressful events and symptoms in your past and present. Be a detective. Look for the clues. Notice what tends to dial your symptoms up or down and focus on the psychological, not the physical.
