My origin story was freedom. With this painting, I symbolised my own freedom..." ๐ชก Next up, we have intricate embroidery from fashion-forward Silver Award Participant Eva from Slovenia @program_mepi: "I decided to embroider because I like manual skills. In most cases, every week, I embroidered a new patch that was connected to things from my life. Participants of the Southern Youth Options program went on an unforgettable trip to Monarto Zoo! ๐๐ฟ Led by John the Zoo Education Officer, everyone participated in a volunteering experience like no other! John began by sharing his passion for conservation and how volunteers can make a real difference in caring for the animals at Monarto Zoo. ๐ฆ๐พ Everyone rolled up their sleeves and got hands-on, helping to collect wood for the Education Centre and even picking up American Bison poo! ๐ฉ But the hard work paid off as participants enjoyed a private tour of the entire zoo with John as their guide. ๐ถโโ๏ธ๐ The day was full of fun, camaraderie, and asking thought-provoking questions. Southern Youth Options has certainly had some fun and engaging activities, and it's been a productive time too! The program has delivered an information session on the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees, workplace safety laws, identifying hazards, personal protective equipment, and the importance of being safe in the workplace, which was facilitated by Jason Mavrikis, a Work Health and Safety Advisor from SafeWork SA. Participants also built planter boxes, went to the gym, and volunteered at Elizabeth House Positive Ageing Centre. ๐ The McLaren Vale Enterprises & The Duke of Edinburgh International Award - Southern Youth Options program is in full swing and our team members have been deep-diving into various activities centered around skill-building and personal growth. From creating self-awareness posters to participating in volunteer work with Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs, the group has embraced learning and giving back to the community. Additionally, everyone took part in a skill session using a DSLR camera and the use of Photoshop to edit photos, an Aboriginal dot painting class, a rest and relaxation session around mindfulness, self-compassion, and self-kindness. ๐ฟ Excursions included a visit to Seaford Public Library and a fun fitness session at the gym in McLaren Vale. Eliza continues her way to the 201Q3 District Youth of the Year final in Toowoomba in a couple of weeks' time after winning Region 6 Public Speaking and overall Winner yesterday at Woodford. While she wears her school badges on her left blazer lapel, she proudly wears both her Bronze and Silver Duke's badges on the left one, although she could justifiably wear her Qld Bridge Award badge as well, as she commenced her Duke's journey when she was 12. PIZZA FOR A LIFE // 'Pizza for a life' is our Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh fundraiser. We have created this event to help raise money for the Lifeline foundation, supporting their work with suicide prevention. The devistating truth found by Lifeline is that Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15-44 and has a death rate over double the road toll. To add on to the tragic loss of the person it has been found that the impact of suicide deaths are felt by up to 135 people, from family members to friends, work colleagues and even first responders at the scene. Our goal is to put money towards making a difference and help make sure that no person has to spend their darkest moments alone. We hope that the Heritage community can help us with this next Wednesday, on 27th, by bringing money and purchasing from 'Pizza for a life'. All profits will go towards helping this incredible cause. Gold participant Eliza won the Lions Australia Youth of the Year Zone Final at Mooloolah Valley against three other students from local high schools sponsored by other Lions Clubs in the area. She competes again next Sunday at Woodford against students from other schools representing clubs south of here to North Brisbane. Duke's participants entering Lions Australia Youth of the Year program have a very distinct advantage over other entrants as the two youth programs dovetail so beautifully. Entrants have so many activities to add to their entry form including their extremely important service to their school and/or community. They also include the Award levels they have already achieved, in a separate criterion for Awards received/earned and you can see Eliza's Bronze and Silver badges on her lapel. It won't be long till Eliza is able to add a Gold badge to them. Good luck next weekend Eliza. Earlier in March we kicked off our Bronze Practice Journeys for some of our School Partners, including St Patrick's Marist College, Cheltenham Girls' High School and Northern Beaches Secondary College. These students all challenged themselves on the Great North Walk, including a difficult climb up the Gorge. All students persevered and we are very proud of their efforts for a Practice Hike. It was a privilege to run the first of three sessions with Table Tennis SA junior players, who are doing their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. This evening the focus was on service / volunteering, gratitude, self-awareness and ownership. We managed to combine these important social and emotional skills with table tennis skills. Tip. When practicing wellbeing skills, make it relevant to the audience, fun and game based.
