He then moved to a small farm near Foyil, Oklahoma. Soon after, he began work on the totem pole. Completion wasn’t until 1948. The giant structure measures 90 ft tall and 30 ft wide at the base and weighs 134 tons. It is decorated with approximately 200 bas relief images. The 14 acre totem pole park consists of 11 totems and sculptures, and an 11-sided building which served as Ed’s workshop, but is now known as the Fiddle House Gift Shop & Museum. The park was added to the National Register of Historical Places on March 30, 1999. Ed Galloway created a Totem Pole Park on his property. Ed had been a wood shop teacher and liked to keep busy. The twelve totems found were done between 1937 to 1963 as a monument to the American Indian. They are beautiful, well made, smooth as butter concrete and brightly painted. That must have been his daytime activity because when you step into his former shop, you are blown away by his whittling of a least a hundred fiddles by night. There are charts of wood type for the displays. Very prolific artist!! #route66 #edgallowaystotempolepark

The Fiddle House was Ed Galloway’s studio and is now a museum and gift shop at his Totem Pole Park. The eleven-sided building resembles a Navajo hogan. It houses Galloway’s fiddles and other carvings. He also made intricate inlaid violins with exotic woods sent to him all over the world by his former art students. They are true works of art and beautiful. #colorful #roadsideoddities #route66 #art #arteducatorsofinstagram #foyil #folkart #oklahoma #travel #explore #roadsideattractions #folkartist #inlaid #mythology #edgallowaystotempolepark #fantastical #oklahomalife #creativity #jojosroadsideattractions #woodworking #nationalhistoriclandmark #fiddlehouse #nativeamericanheritagemonth

World’s Largest Concrete Totem Pole is found at Ed Galloway's Totem Pole Park. In 1937, art teacher Ed Galloway began his retirement project: a 90-foot-tall totem pole rising from the back of a big blue turtle. The tower of steel was coated with concrete, created in part with sand from a nearby river, and gradually rose from his humble yard in Foyil, Oklahoma. It took him 11 years to build it and then he started on other totems and statues. He also built an 11 sided fiddle house, where his goal was to carve violins from every type of tree in the world. Galloway took inspiration from National Geographic magazines and postcards. He interpreted those sources rather fantastically, as a concrete cactus topped with watchful owls or in the bulbous shape of the central totem pole itself. The large blue turtle at the base of the primary column probably references the World Turtle myth. Galloway’s owl wearing a medallion of a man in a headdress and the color scheme of pink and turquoise, have little to do with local tribes, or really any culture on Earth. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 30, 1999. The park is now owned and operated by the Rogers County Historical Society. #bigthings #bigthingsonly #big #totempole #colorful #roadsideoddities #route66 #art #arteducatorsofinstagram #foyil #folkart #oklahoma #travel #explore #roadsideattractions #folkartist #mythology #edgallowaystotempolepark #fantastical #oklahomalife #nationalgeographic #creativity #jojosroadsideattractions #nationalhistoriclandmark #nativeamericanheritagemonth @heavan_of_travel #giant #giantthings #giant_arts #giantthingsroadside

Located in northeast Oklahoma in the town of Foyil is what is known as Ed Galloway's Totem Pole Park. Mr. Galloway retired in 1937 but was the kind of guy who always needed to be busy so he spent the next 24 years creating totem poles on his property. The first picture is of the largest totem pole in the world. Made of sandstone, it stands 90 feet tall, 18 feet in diameter, weighs 135 tons, has 200 carved pictures mainly of Native Indians or related scenes and it took him 11 years to complete.. The other pictures show some of his other creations while the last picture shows the violins he also made presumably after he got bored with totem poles. #EdGallowaysTotemPolePark #TotemPolePark #FoyilOklahoma #Oklahoma

When Ed Galloway retired in 1937 he moved to this spot in northeastern Oklahoma where he created his 'Totem Pole Park'. The magnum opus of the park is this 27 meter high totem pole, but there is a bunch of smaller ones too. And the 'Fiddle house' with 300 fiddles that he built out of 300 different types of wood. #edgallowaystotempolepark #oklahoma

Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park is a couple miles E of Route 66 from Foyil, Oklahoma. Ed labored on his passion from 1937 to his death in 1961. He served in the US Army in the Philippines. The park boasts a 90’ concrete totem pole standing atop a large turtle as the centerpiece, completed in 1948, hailed as the largest such tower in the world. The turtle refers to the creation of Earth, in particular North & South America - also known as Turtle Islands. The accompanying tree sculpture is the largest of several in the park, this one demonstrating a few animals within the primitive masterpiece. #edgalloway #totempole #turtle #treecarving #turtleisland #🐢 #roadsideoddities #sculpture #roadsideattraction #route66 #roadtrippin #lookup #edgallowaystotempolepark #oklahoma #nrhp #fiddlehouse #nativeamerican #travelUSA

Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park, located in Chelsea, Oklahoma, is a non-profit operation that is owned by the Rogers County Historical Society. Sidetracked Route 66 motorists can see the totem pole park for over half a mile before they reach the park. The art environment was created by the artist Ed Galloway between the years of 1937 and 1963 as a monument, as well as a tribute to the American Indian. Galloway passed away in 1963. It is listed on the national register of historical places and it features 12 structures, which were mostly handcrafted by Mr. Galloway. The structures symbolize and pay homage to the history of the land, which was known as Indian Territory before statehood in 1907. As pictured, you can see Native American portraits in which they are depicted wearing feather headdresses. There are various wildlife motifs which mimic the totem poles of the Haida and Tlingit tribes from present-day Alaska. The largest totem on the property (and largest in the world) is concrete and it features over 200 hand-sculpted bad-relief creatures and Native American portraits. The totem pole stands at 90 feet tall. As I entered into the gift shop, I struck a conversation with a sweet older lady. She informed me that as recent as two years ago, the totems were repainted by students and locals in the area. The need for this is due to the issues of the concrete and paint start to pop off. #totempole #oklahomaphotography #edgallowaystotempolepark

It's Totem Pole Tuesday and we have GREAT NEWS to share. New information signs with QR Codes have been placed and planted along the path at Totem Pole Park! Thank you David Anderson! This signage endeavor has been a year-and-a-half long project sponsored by the Rogers County Historical Society with a significant grant from the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program. Five new signs have been created for Totem Pole Park (two along Historic Route 66 and three within the park) by team members Bobbie Cary, Rogers County Historical Society treasurer, grant writer, and project manager; David Anderson, Totem Pole Park Director, signpost maker & installer; Erin Turner, TPP historian, story writer, and sign designer; and Christa Rice, RCHS website story writer, photographer, and designer. Patrick Clancy took the photo for the Route 66 signs. Jason Jones of Claremore Signs was the sign maker & also an installer. QR Codes on the signs now lead guests through their smart phones to website information about two of the park's favorite features - the Large Totem Pole and the Fiddle House. We invite you to stop by and enjoy this new, informative, and educational experience! As always, we look forward to seeing you 💚🐢. #route66. #historicroute66 #FoyilOK #ChelseaOK #RogersCountyHistoricalSociety #RCHS #EdGallowaysTotemPolePark https://www.rchs1.org/totem-pole-park

This place really was Ed Galloway’s dream – he started building what became Totem Pole Park in 1937, and continued adding to the place until his death in 1962. The place fell into disrepair after that, but by the late 1980s, Ed was recognized as one of America’s noteworthy folk artists and restoration work on the part was begun. This article notes that it’s taken longer to restore Ed’s creations than it took him to build them and that the original paint colors on the huge concrete totem pole have been duplicated with special, long-lasting paint. If you’re in the area, you ought to stop by; admission’s free and in the mornings, it’s nicely shady. Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park Foyil, Oklahoma photographed 10.12.2021 PS: That’s the world’s largest concrete totem pole, in case you keep track of things like that. Maybe you’ve hesitated to take your totem pole and get out on the road, not knowing where you could even park a totem pole. Lucky for you: I found the place, right here in Oklahoma. For trip-planning purposes, though, please not that you cannot park your totem pole overnight. Which sort of opens up some other complications, doesn’t it? It's TOTEM POLE TUESDAY and time to share another GALLOWAY HISTORY TIDBIT. "Although he may be better known for the 'World’s Largest Totem Pole,' Ed Galloway’s first and continuous love throughout his life was wood." This is why Mr. Galloway created his Fiddle House woodworking workshop. Here he created all manner of treasures - delicately inlaid fiddles, tables, portraits, and so much more. You can read about The Fiddle House and the museum of Galloway artifacts it now houses by following the link below. Or better yet, stop by Totem Pole Park for a friendly visit during business hours. It's TOTEM POLE TUESDAY and time for another GALLOWAY HISTORY TIDBIT. Ed Galloway constructed his stone home in 1937 and continued to make improvements on the property until his death in 1962. After Ed's passing, the house slowly fell into ruin until the Rogers County Historical Society and friends came to the rescue. A tremendous restoration effort of the Ed & Villie Galloway home began in 1989 when the RCHS acquired Totem Pole Park. 🐺Well isn't this a friendly photo of "man's best friend," our favorite Fiddle House, and Ed and Villie Galloway! Did you know the Fiddle House was also sometimes called the Grape House because of the grapevines painted on the walls? Gotta love vintage photos of Ed Galloway's Totem Pole Park 🍇 🐢💚🎻 #EdGallowaysTotemPolePark #RogersCountyHistoricalSociety #LargestConcerteTotemPoleInTheWorld #RCHSowned #Route66 #Route66Oklahoma #FoyilOK #ChelseaOK #HistoricRoute66 #OklahomaHistory

We took a rest in Adair OK and realized a short detour would take us here. This is old Route 66. I personally like the cigarette smoking owl. #edgallowaystotempolepark #transamericatrail
