“Many people have had grandiose ideas, but very few people ever executed them. And he executed his. He was willing to do whatever it took to turn his vision into reality.” - John Wooley, author of Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park. Nathan “Ed” Galloway, a man who wanted to bring people joy through his art, is the man behind the impressive 90 foot totem pole and the surrounding park, located about 4 miles off Route 66 in Oklahoma. Ed was a self-sufficient man who made all of his equipment and tools. He used scrap wire, metal fragments, and cement to create his pieces of art. It is estimated that he used twenty-eight tons of cement, six tons of steel and 100 tons of sand to complete the massive totem pole in 1948, which became the centerpiece of Ed’s Totem Pole Park. By 1962, hundreds of people were visiting the attraction every weekend. Over 70 years later, Ed’s masterpiece is still standing tall. Restoration work on the iconic totem pole, by artist Erin Turner- who began repainting the totem pole in 2015- was just recently finished and a Blue Grass Jam at the park is scheduled for August 15 from 2 p.m. until dark to commemorate the completion. Admission is free but donations are welcome. So, grab your friends, family, and a mask for this celebration you won’t want to miss! June 17, 2000 (missed posting yesterday, but will make it up, had a funny interaction with someone that’s worth revisiting.) I was into Eastern Oklahoma by now, and this day, I stopped at one of the first classic “world’s largest” kind of places on the AdVANture... the world’s largest totem pole, which isn’t really a totem pole at all, technically, but you can see image #2 for the particulars. A local guy in Foyil, OK built this “totem pole park” and it’s still there today. Directly from my journal: “I took a last look around at the totem poles and took some more pictures. I decided I'd like to make something like that someday...not totem poles, but something. This place has endured because it is close to Route 66....people used to drive to the Totem Pole Park to have a picnic, or would just go out of their way 10 minutes to see "the place with the totem poles". The American road is a funny place.” It rained most of the days I was traveling through Oklahoma, it just didn’t stop. Route 66 is wonderfully preserved through OK because the interstate built to replace Route 66, I-44, from Missouri to Oklahoma City is a tollway, so locals use old 66. Much of it is quite desolate, narrow in places, and very cool. Once I got to Tulsa I started seeing cowboys, or, at least, lots of guys in cowboy hats and boots. Well now I can die knowing I got to see the worlds largest concrete totem pole built by a bored white guy. #worldslargesttotempole #route66 #folkart Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and claiming the title of the World’s Largest Concrete Totem Pole, the park features a 90 foot totem pole that towers over the park in a vivid array of folk art colors. Ed Galloway built the totem pole over an 11 year period from 1937 to 1948, utilizing some 28 tons of cement, six tons of steel, and 100 tons of sand and rock. His tribute to the American Indian features 200 carved pictures, with four nine-foot Indians near the top each representing a different tribe. The centerpiece totem pole, rising from the back of an enormous turtle, sits in the midst of a beautiful nine acre park. The park also features Galloway’s eleven-sided "Fiddle House" that previously housed his hand-carved fiddles. Artifacts made by Ed Galloway and visuals of the park development are also on display in the museum. Throughout the park are numerous of colorful totems that display a variety of Indian Folk Art.
