8/13/23 Straight Outta Sitka This month I got to visit Alaska for the second time ever since starting this career. The last time was probably exactly a year ago when I laid over in Juneau. Our crew took a stroll through Totem Park, ate salmon berries, and saw bald eagles and soooo many salmon! So many wins on this trip. It was raining when we arrived but stopped when we took a stroll. They opened up a trail that was closed until we got there. We stopped in the cutest gift shop with the sweetest dog, Olivia. And on our last block to our hotel a grand bald eagle flew over us. Sitka was so beautiful!! I absolutely loved it. And I’m so glad I decided to bring my camera with me. Sitka National Historical Park in Sitka, AK, preserves the site of the first interaction and subsequent battle between native Tlingit peoples and newly-arrived Russian fur traders in the 1790s. The park is on a small peninsula in the Sitka Sound, where the ancestral Tlingit settlement Shis’g’i Noow (“sapling fort”) had been located for some 3,000 years. Today, the landscape boasts 18 totem poles of local Tlingit and Haida design. Totem poles are cultural displays of clan heritage and traditions; they are usually carved from western red cedar which can be more rot-resistant than other tree species (but most totems rarely last more than a century in the rainy climate on the northwestern coast). The free-standing totems are sometimes larger iterations of smaller decorative carvings or of a building’s interior support columns which may have been carved in similar fashion. The more monumental totem poles were laborious and displayed extremely artistic abilities as well as the prestige of local communities.
