Het kloostercomplex, het moederhuis van de Orde der Franciscanessen van de heilige Georgius martelaar, verrees eind 19e eeuw nadat de Duitse afdeling zich in Thuine had gevestigd. De huidige kloostergebouwen dateren van omstreeks 1900. De kerk is een uiterst indrukwekkend voorbeeld van het Duitse religieuze baksteenexpressionisme uit het interbellum. Another piece from my ephemera collection: This postcard shows a spectacular view from the so-called »Ehrenhof« ensemble towards the former »Rheinhalle« in Düsseldorf, Germany. Both structures were erected for the 1926 trade fair »GeSoLei« which is an acronym and abbreviation for the German words »Gesundheitspflege, Soziale Fürsorge und Leibesübungen« which roughly translates to health care, social care and physical exercise. Despite the weird name the trade fair was a huge success and turned out to be the biggest trade fair during the Weimar Republic with 7.5 million visitors and a total exhibition space of 400.000 m². The trade fair grounds with its buildings and gardens have been planned and designed under the direction of Prof. Wilhelm Kreis from 1925 to 1926. The Second Goetheanum by Rudolph Steiner (Dornach, Switzerland; 1928) Part 3. The interior architecture: . Steiner sought to create forms out of concrete that were spiritually expressive and that these forms were derived from spiritual inspirations. The stained glass windows in the present building date from Steiner’s time; the painted ceiling and sculptural columns are were replications or reinterpretations of those in the First Goetheanum. . Personally, the paralleled stairwells were the highlight. Much like the great religious Renaissance and Baroque buildings, the scale and serenity of the large spaces created an otherworldly sensation, as planned, to elevate the experience beyond the physical. It has been granted protected status as a Swiss national monument. . Jakiś czas temu po burzliwej dyskusji udało się nam ustalić, że ten element architektury wnętrz najprawdopodobniej nosi nazwę 'separator kolejki'. A przynajmniej tak nazywają się modułowe, chromowane słupki z rozwijaną taśmą, które znamy z lotnisk czy większych dworców. Funkcja ta sama, użyteczność, trzeba przyznać jednak większa, ale wzornictwo... Nie ma nawet podjazdu do separatorów z Legnicy. Nawet do tych prostszych jak te z Częstochowy czy wyburzonego dworca w Nysie. Tak kontynuując akademicką dyskusję, która wprawdzie do niczego nie prowadzi, ale jest jak się okazuje w miarę ciekawa - czy separatorem nie są jedynie wolnostojące elementy, a pozostałe są ladą kasową? Też nie do końca, bo wystające części również pełnią funkcję oddzielającą. Czyli byłaby to ladą kasowa z funkcją separatora, oraz separator. Jego kształty sugerują płynność obsługi. Architekt wnętrz prawdopodobnie stworzył tutaj dzieło swojego życia. Dworzec kolejowy w Legnicy został wybudowany w stylu ekspresjonistycznym. Styl ten często nazywany modernizmem trójkąta, co gdy spojrzymy na detale, zupełnie nie dziwi. W tych latach również popularne stało się stosowanie ceramiki, nie tylko jako rzeźbiarskiego detalu, ale też w formie wykończenia ścian. Railway station (1926-28) by L. Aanvankelijk heette het Achter-Zieuwent en voorheen was de katholieke bevolking in dit buitengebied aangewezen op de kerk in Zieuwent. Took Whiley to the groomer's today, who's located near this rather striking church from 1929, the Kreuz-Kirche. Some call the architecture "expressionist", though I'm not sure I'd use that term (but must admit that I don't really have a better suggestion, either). I drive or walk past this building so often, that I sort of forgot how truly unusual it is, until recently, its idiosyncrasy was mentioned to me by an old friend of mine from France. GRUNDTVIKS CHURCH, COPENHAGEN Architect: Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint, 1940 Jensen-Klint’s design for Grundtvig’s Church is a synthesis of architectural styles. In preparation for the project, the architect studied many Danish village churches, particularly those on the island of Zealand with stepped gables. Their traditional building techniques, materials and decoration inspired his design. Klint merged the modern geometric forms of Brick Expressionism with the classical vertical of Gothic architecture. The most striking feature of the building is its west façade, reminiscent of a westwork or of the exterior of a church organ. It includes the 49 m (160 ft) tall bell tower. The imposing façade with its strong verticality guides one’s eyes towards the sky. The bottom half of the tower is simple brick while the upper reaches present the appearance of one solid, rippling surface. Klint decorated the nave with a version of the stepped gables common on Danish churches, but reinterpreted by doubling the apex. The nave was designed with generous dimensions: the triple-aisled hall church is 76 m (259 ft) long in total and 35 m (115 ft) wide; the nave has a height of 22 m (72 ft). The interior, inspired by Gothic architecture and comparable in size to Copenhagen cathedral, holds a congregation of 1,440. Some five million yellow bricks, a typical Danish building material, were used for the edifice. In its floor plan, the interior resembles that of a typical Gothic church with a nave, two lateral aisles and a small transept. Its proportions are also Gothic: a long, narrow nave, an extremely high ceiling, the columns which rise up to pointed arches and the ribbed groin vaults above the nave and aisles. The Stumm Haus in Düsseldorf, Germany: The structure in the style of brick expressionism was built by architect Paul Bonatz from 1922 to 1924 for a local steel company/union. As it was an extension to a neighbouring company building it got the nickname »Neuer Stahlhof« (≈ »New Steel Court«), located next to the actual »Stahlhof« (»Steel Court») on the right side of this photo. The Stahlhof dates from 1908 and was the built manifestation of power and wealth which the local steel industry had gained with their worldwide selling products. The name refers to the old »Stalhof / Stahlhof« (»Steelyard«) in London, an old Hanseatic League trading facility. Like so many other important cities Düsseldorf has been heavily bombed during WWII and lost so many gems. The city center isn't as pretty as it used to be. It's time for a Throwback Thursday. And here's the Goetheanum in Dornach, near Basel. This unusual building was completed in 1928, after the first Goetheanum had been destroyed in a fire. It serves as the head office of the Anthroposophical Society. It's also a cultural center, that houses, among other things, a theatre, and a bookstore. And the visible concrete, and the almost complete lack of right angles in its design give the Goetheanum a distinct look. It's also one of my favourite buildings I have visited so far.
