Another custom everlasting wreath made for fall using eucalyptus, celosia, ruskus, million stars, nigella pods, pampas and straw flowers on a grapevine base. Love the rust, burgandy and cream tones of this wreath and of course the texture. Most of the flowers came from local flower growers such @rainwater_ranch and some foraged. These are no ordinary pancakes. I made these pancakes this morning out of live oak acorns I collected last fall. Over the last two months, I cracked each nut by hand (bruising my hands in the process); ground them coarsely; leached the ground acorns in cold water, which I changed daily for a month; squeezed the water out; dried the acorn meal in the sun; and then ground the meal into a fine powder with a coffee grinder. I made pancakes this morning out of this precious acorn flour as a birthday gift to myself. Iβm staying with friends near Birmingham, Alabama for the holidays, and am delighting in the abundance of oak varieties in the area. This photo represents at least 5 different varieties Iβve gathered so far, but Iβve only IDβd one of them with certainty: The biggest acorns in the photo are Northern red oak (Quercus rubra). The ones with the prominent scaly cap that covers 3/4 of the nut may be from Q. marilandcia, or Blackjack oak. Still trying to figure the others out! Needless to say, these acorns look very different from their California counterparts, which I find fascinating. π Canβt wait to process these beauties into flour, along with the ones I collected in Southern California earlier in the season. I love these striped conk fungus that are usually found on birch and beech, like some small horse left behind their hooves as they jumped over the logs. Too tough to eat but cook them in a pressure cooker for hours and hours and youβll have yourself a medicinal broth that should cure what ails you. This has been The Year of the Acorn for me! Today, I drove past a stand of stately Interior Live Oak (Quercus Wizlizenii) trees, native to Southern California, which are abundant in the foothills in my area. Having already gathered acorns from canyon live oak and black oak earlier this month during a day trip to Oak Glen (@discover_oakglen) - see last photo for examples - I couldnβt wait to gather a new variety! So I scooped up a ton, careful to discard the damaged ones, or ones with holes (which mean an acorn weevil has drilled its way out). It's pawpaw season! So #tbt to our delish, vegan, blueberry pawpaw muffins! . I am fortunate enough to have a pawpaw tree in my backyard (my mom actually planted it!), but for those who don't happen to be so lucky, you might be able to find your own! Pawpaws grow in the eastern half of the US, from around northern Florida to the southern parts of Michigan. Technically we in Massachusetts are a little far north for pawpaw trees going wild, but if you plant your own you can get fruit! If you've never had a pawpaw, there's a reason why- they're terrible to ship. Thin-skinned, they bruise really easily. But the flavor is crazy! They have a custard-like, banana-mango type of flavor. So tropical feeling, yet they're native to us here in North America! .
