On this day in 1955, Albert Einstein died in Princeton, New Jersey. Many people consider him one of the smartest and most forward-thinking scientific minds in human history. He was publicly a critic of capitalism as well as any fascist and/or imperial government. He often spoke out against the mistreatment of African-Americans in the United States and was against a nationalist Jewish state in Palestine, or anywhere else. Instead, he would “much rather see a reasonable agreement reached with the Arabs on the basis of living together in peace.” drawing by @danieljcallender 2022 #AlbertEinstein #Einstein #Einsteinian #Science #Scienceisreal #ScienceIsFun #famousscientists #anti-Capitalist #Socialist #AntiZionist #AntiFascist #Germany #OnThisDay #ThisDayInHistory #History #Draw #Draws #Drawing #Drawings #DigitalDrawing #PortraitDrawing #DrawingSketch #Portrait #Sketches #Sketch #Sketching #Sketchbook #DigitalDrawing #Illustration #DigitalIllustration #Cartoon

For Weird-History Wednesday: All people do stupid things sometimes. Including geniuses! The mind of Sir Isaac Newton was, intellectually speaking, one of the greatest in history. Psychologically, however, it wasn’t always the best. Newton’s preoccupation with his studies made him shockingly absent-minded. Here is the most famous example of that: One morning, Newton sat late in his bedroom thinking so hard about a particular science question that he didn’t get up to eat breakfast (this happened often). So his maid came to his room with a pan of water and an egg. She intended to boil it over the fire in his room, but he told her he wanted to be alone. He would boil the egg himself, he said, and time the boiling with his pocket watch. “Make sure you boil it at least three minutes,” the maid told him, before leaving the room. I don’t think the maid trusted Newton to remember to boil the egg, because she came back after a little while to check on him. She found him standing next to the fire, boiling his watch in the pan of water while he held the uncooked egg in his other hand, staring into space! (Note: Some scholars claim this story can’t be trusted because there are no contemporary accounts of it. It’s been around for a long time, though, and it aligns with the anecdotes told about Newton's personality by people who knew him.) #isaacnewton #sirisaacnewton #famousscientists #scientificgenius #greatminds #absentminded #funnymistakes #funnyhistory #weirdhistory #weirdhistorywednesday

🌿 Celebrating Ruth Patrick: Visionary in Environmental Science 🌿 Ruth Patrick, a name synonymous with groundbreaking discoveries in environmental science, forever changed our understanding of ecosystems and their resilience. While she is often celebrated for her discovery of genetic transposition, her contributions extend far beyond this single achievement. Patrick developed the revolutionary Patrick Principle, a cornerstone in environmental science for assessing water pollution. Through her work, she provided a tangible method for measuring the health of aquatic ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of biodiversity as an indicator of environmental quality. As the founder of diatom ecology, Patrick pioneered the study of these single-celled algae as key indicators of water quality. Her innovative approach demonstrated how organisms within an ecosystem reflect the state of their environment, leading to more effective strategies for water pollution management. In 1996, Ruth Patrick's relentless dedication to science was recognized with the National Medal of Science, a testament to her profound impact on environmental research and policy. Patrick's legacy is a reminder of the critical role science plays in preserving our planet. Her work continues to inspire environmental scientists and advocates around the world to protect our most precious resource—water. Let's honor Ruth Patrick's contributions by committing to the stewardship of our environment, using science to guide our actions toward a sustainable future. #RuthPatrick #EnvironmentalScience #WaterConservation #SustainableFuture #famousscientists https://www.nasonline.org/publications/biographical-memoirs/memoir-pdfs/patrick-ruth.pdf

One thing from the bucket list to be checked. Meet and listen to a Nobel Prize winner. It was such a great pleasure to listen about space, its past and future, gravitational waves, black and wormholes and (im)possibility of time traveling. Kip Thorne was awarded with Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017 and was a great friend of Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan. He is in his 80's, but still you can feel that awesome energy and passion for the science and unlocking the secrets of Universe and Time. After this lecture, person can only think how small part of all the Universe we all are, how irrelevant all your problems are and that even without you, everything would work just fine. #kipthorne #kipthornetheory #kuleuven #leuvenlife #leuven #theoreticalphysi̇cs #spaceandtime #physics #gravity #universe #interstellar #sciencefiction #timetravelling #nobelprize #nobelprizewinner #nobelprizeinphysics #theoreticalphysicsforum #physicstoday #passionforscience #spaceexploration #spacescience #famousscientists #scienceisfun #scienceisreal

Albert Einstein, celebrated as one of the greatest theoretical physicists of all time, known for his theory of relativity and the famous equation E=mc^2, had a personal life that was complicated and unconventional by many standards. One aspect that often surprises people is his marriage to Elsa Löwenthal, his first cousin on his mother’s side and second cousin on his father’s side, in 1919. This relationship followed his separation from his first wife, Mileva Marić. The marriage to Elsa, while not uncommon for the time, raises eyebrows today due to the close genetic relationship. Their union, which lasted until Elsa’s death in 1936, was marked by Einstein’s continued work and fame in the world of physics, while Elsa took on the role of a supportive partner, managing his domestic affairs and accompanying him on travels related to his work. #Einstein #Physics #Relativity #E=mc2 #TheoreticalPhysics #NobelPrize #Science #Genius #HistoricalFigures #Marriage #Cousins #Controversy #PersonalLife #20thCentury #ScientificRevolution #Love #Family #Genetics #Legacy #Icon #Physicist #TheoryOfRelativity #ScientificBreakthrough #Intellectual #AlbertEinstein #History #Biography #ComplexLife #FamousScientists

Another week, another amazing Scientist! Jennifer Doudna is changing the landscape of genetic engineering. Jennifer Doudna developed CRISPR, a method of genetic engineering that allows scientists to make precise genetic changes relatively easily. Last November, CRISPR saw its first major success in two female monkey twins, Mingming and Lingling, who were born healthy but with specific genetic mutations created through the technology. But it's not without drama: The development of CRISPR ignited the scientific world with controversy after Chinese researchers had experimented with genetic engineering on a human embryo. https://vcresearch.berkeley.edu/faculty/jennifer-doudna #famousscientists #CRISPR

Margaret Collins was an African American child prodigy - an entomologist who specialized in the study of termites, and a civil rights activist! Collins’s accomplishments as a scientist include co-identifying a new species of termite. At her core, Margaret was a field biologist, and she demonstrated it through her travels and termite collection trips to a dozen countries. Her long and illustrious career included publishing of scientific papers, tenured faculty positions, and service as a curator of the termite collection at the National Museum of Natural History. #womeninstem #womeninscience #famousscientists

For #internationalwomensday I wanted to reshare this post about a truly inspiring woman, whose memoirs I read a couple of years ago. The first ever person to be called a "scientist", she humbly pushed the way for many more women to excel and be recognised in STEM. Humble being the operative word. So it's up to us to celebrate her and (very importantly) all who follow(ed) in her footsteps. - Born in 1780s Jedburgh and working at a time of great prejudice to women in general, let alone in science, she became the epitome of the 19th Century polymath. She was at the cutting edge and wrote textbooks and findings on mathematics, astronomy, geography and molecular physics. Writing accessibly, she popularised science for many, but was ever humble in her achievements. Ever aware of her work being viewed through the lens of the gender politics of the time, she wrote, "[I] thought it unjust that women should be given a desire for knowledge if it were wrong to acquire it". She was the very first signature on John Stuart Mill's petition proposing votes for women in 1868. She wasn't in the habit of being wrong, except perhaps in the opening remarks of her personal journal; "I have no events to record that could interest the public" Follow your inspirations, fight injustice, be like Mary. #scotland #scientists #womeninscience #womeninstem #historyofscience #herstory #suffragehistory #famousscientists #marysomerville #scottishtouristguidesassociation @stgaguides @fegtouristguides @wftga_official #iwd #iwd2024 #internationalwomansday #internationalwomensday2024

Did you know that Joseph Priestley was an Englishman born in 1733. Joseph’s contribution to the world of science includes his identification of oxygen in its gaseous state. His other work includes the invention of soda water and discovery of other “gases.” Of course, his most famous discovery of “dephogisticated air”, oxygen, remains his most famous discovery. #famousscientists #didyouknow #oxygen

A marine biologist and nature writer, Rachel Carson catalyzed the global environmental movement with her 1962 book Silent Spring. Outlining the dangers of chemical pesticides, the book led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides and sparked the movement that ultimately led to the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Carson received medals from the National Audubon Society and the American Geographical Society, and induction into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. https://www.rachelcarson.org/ #didyaknow #famousscientists #pesticides #EPA

As the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies took up the race for the COVID-19 vaccine, there was one discovery by a young woman scientist that had the potential to provide a therapy to novel coranavirus. Anika Chebrolu, a 14-year-old Indian American, had started her science project in her bedroom when she was in eighth grade, initially looking to find a treatment for the influenza virus. That meant studying and researching the pandemics that affected the world throughout history, until she started actually living through one. As the COVID-19 outbreak spread around the world, Amika changed gears with the help of her mentor to target the virus that causes COVID-19. She identified a lead molecule that can selectively bind to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and potentially inhibit the novel corona virus. In October 2020, Anika won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. #famousscientists #covid19

So check out this week's spotlight on unknown scientists - Erwin Chargaff! A Jewish man from Austria, Erwin was educated at the Vienna University of Technology, and later worked at the University of Berlin until Hitler's policies prevented Jews from holding academic positions. Erwin left Germany, moving to France and then to the United States where he became a professor at Columbia University. Erwin became well known for his investigations into the structure of DNA - and created three rules (now known as Chargaff's Rules) around the structure of DNA. 1. The number of Adenine residues always equal the number of Thymine residues 2. The number of Guanine residues always equal the number of Cytosine residues 3. The number of purines (A+G) always equals he number of pyrimidines (T+C) These rules follow in all organisms studied. Welcome to this week's spotlight on scientists! Today we welcome Jan Ingenhousz to our small group! He was born in 1730 in the southern Netherlands and studied medicine at the age of 16 at the University of Leuven. In 1764, Jan traveled to England to learn the latest techniques in smallpox immunization. He became a a leading proponent of variolation, an early method used to immunize patients against smallpox that involved inoculating patients with smallpox virus taken from patients with a mild form of the disease. Jan also is credited with the discovery of photosynthesis and described Brownian motion at a much earlier date than Robert Brown (1827), the English investigator credited with that phenomenon. http://www.macroevolution.net/jan-ingenhousz.html #didyaknow #famousscientists #scientists #science #biology

Happy Monday everyone! It's Motivational Monday, so let's get motivated! Albert Einstein is one of the world's most famous scientists in history. While he had a high IQ, he also possessed a strong understanding of humanity. What you give will always outweigh what you receive because the highest value in the gift-giving process lies within the process not the value of the gift itself. . . . #VK #VKConsultantGroup #MedicalPractice #Business #alberteinstein #einstein #quotes #motivationalmonday #quoteoftheweek #motivationalquotes #businessquotes #famousscientists #history #humanity #value #gift

I want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on one of the many incredible scientists that have contributed to our lives. What makes this scientist special is their special circumstances of disability. Often disability is seen as an obstacle but this scientist never seemed to slow down. Animal behaviorist and autism activist Grandin, who was diagnosed with autism as a child, received her master's in animal science from Arizona State University and her Ph.D from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Grandin’s work on animal behavior has been cited as an inspiration for multiple changes to the livestock industry, including how animals are cared for at meat processing plants. would you have time for a coffee with Sir Isaac Newton? (see above, about 10 years ago :-) Today, he might be in the mood for a conversation (swipe left :-) You’d be in for some fascinating stories from a man who lived under seven kings and queens, a Protector, and three different forms of government. You’d also get some insight into his several careers as a scientist, MP, Master of the Mint, and President of the Royal Society (which he turned from a dilettantes’ club to an eminent scientific organisation :-) Have your coffee ready, and you’ll even hear some amusing anecdotes from his private life. He was friends with Samuel Pepys and John Locke, no less. But please don’t mention Nicolas Fatio de Duillier, as this might cause your conversation to end abruptly. And you wouldn’t want to upset Sir Isaac on his birthday, would you? He is 81 today 🥂 Happy birthday, Sir Isaac 💐 PS In one of her Turkish Embassy Letters, Lady Mary quips that she’d ‘rather be a rich Effendi with all his ignorance than Sir Isaac Newton with all his knowledge.’ #isaacnewton #sirisaac #sirisaacnewton #newton #physics #gravity #motion #physicsfacts #philosophy #discover #discovery #science #scientists #famousscientists #sciencebreakthrough #sciencehistory #historyofscience #samuelpepys #johnlocke #britishhistory #history #historians #michaelwhite #billbryson #historiansofinstagram #acoffee #ladymarywortleymontagu #ladymaryofficial #ladymary300 #mother_of_immunisation
