May is apraxia awareness month. This is my little apraxia warrior Harry. Apraxia is a lifelong neurological motor speech disorder - he knows what he wants to say but when the brain sends out the messages to coordinate his mouth, jaw, oral muscles and breathing to produce the sounds of speech it all gets muddled up. He also has a cleft palate so structurally his oral musculature doesnโt function as it should to support production of speech sounds. Speech is extremely effortful for Harry as he has to think about each individual sound/syllable and how to produce and sequence those sounds into words and into sentences - he tires quickly. Apraxia also affects the way Harry learns and particularly affects his understanding of language and literacy. He has intensive speech therapy and occupational therapy. Harry also has scoliosis and wears a spinal brace. He has hypotonia (low muscle tone) and microcephaly (small head circumference). He also has developmental coordination disorder (global dyspraxia). Some kids have apraxia in isolation other kids have Co-existing conditions like Harry. We constantly advocate to secure services for Harry and others like Harry to raise awareness and improve support. For any parent of a child with SEND needs life is extremely busy as there are more therapy appointments and hospital appointments to attend along with daily therapy activities. ONS latest figures show there are now around 2 million in the UK with Long Covid, and half of those have had it for two years or more. Long Covid is an energy-limiting condition which profoundly impacts every aspect of a personโs life, including employment, financial security, self-care, mobility and quality of life. Many with Long Covid are now in receipt of disability benefits, particularly PIP. Reforms that introduce extra barriers to claiming benefits may mean those most in need are likely to lose out. Losing PIP may also mean some of those in work may struggle to continue, as all their energy is expended in attempting to cope without support for daily living. There is not enough evidence of reasonable adjustments options being put into practice for people to work from home or do flexible working. We support people with Long Covid, many of whom sadly have not been able to return to work. People in our community would love suitable opportunities to work. However, the 1950โs system we have can't think outside the box. We employ people with Long Covid and operate effectively and sustainably as a team. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and at The Ferry House, we're deeply committed to this cause. We're actively working to combat the stigma and challenges faced by hospitality workers. According to The Caterer, four in five hospitality professionals have reported symptoms of poor mental health over the last year... Here at The Ferry House, we prioritise the well-being of our team. We ensure a healthy work/life balance, providing downtime, especially over Christmas when we close for at least 5 days, allowing our team to spend quality time with their families. Recognising the high-pressure nature of our industry, our chefs work a 4-day week, giving them the essential time away they need. Personal development is key within our business. Many of our team members have progressed upwards or sideways to other departments. For instance, our two new Operations Executives previously worked in our Front of House and Housekeeping teams. We believe in promoting from within. Will, our Senior Gardener, is currently being trained in-house by our Head Gardener, Jane, who will be retiring in a few years. Flexibility is essential. Our office roles offer flexibility, acknowledging that the traditional 9-5 doesn't always suit those with small children. We don't expect our team to sacrifice their family life for work. The Carerโs Leave Act, which was first introduced in 2023, came into effect on 6th April 2024. This means that from day one of employment, an employee can request time off to help a dependent who needs long-term care. Employees can take up to 1 week (dependent on how many days they work per week) of carerโs leave every 12 months. There is a slightly different calculation for employees who work part of the year or variable hours.
