After not going on an airplane with the kids since 2019, first time flying long distance with a 4, 7, 9 year old is so hard!! I had bought the cheapest flight that I could find, hence we had to travel over 24hrs! It was BRUTAL. The kids did not do well on the plane flying at night because of several reasons. 1) They are so much bigger now, so sleeping was very difficulty. They curled up and slept on Daddy’s legs, one on each side of him, it was NOT fun. (see picture) 2) Their brains were so excited about the whole flying experience that even though their bodies were screaming to them that they were tired, their minds were not cooperating. They were very dysregulated from overexhaustion. We experienced several major meltdowns on the planes that included full out screaming and limbs flailing everywhere. 😩 So that was on our way to Canada, we were SOOOOO HAPPY when we finally arrived! On our way back to Hong Kong, we actually got on the flight at 6:30am in the morning! Which means we had to get to the airport at about 3:30-4:00am 🥴 We anticipated meltdowns every step of the way from Canada back to HK, but it turned out way better for several reasons: 1️⃣We prepped SO much snacks and charged up all devices and downloaded a LOT of cartoons. They REALLY helped! 2️⃣We flew in the daytime so we did not have to force the children to sleep, they can stay up and watch as much TV as they like while us parents can watch as much TV as we want! #winwin 😆😆 3️⃣Just being mentally prepared to deal with meltdowns helped us. In conclusion, in the future, I would buy daytime flights so we don’t have to deal with trying to make the children sleep when they don’t want to! The other thing I learned from a friend is, we could get #sunflowerlanyard ahead of time for the kids to wear! The lanyards inform the staff members that the wearer of the lanyard has hidden disabilities and may need more time and assistance at the airport. Which would be so helpful! For us, meltdowns takes 30 min - 3 hours to resolve, knowing that the right people know what we might need helps put our minds at ease.

What can you take in your hand luggage if you are flying with a baby? There is so much confusion over what you can and can’t take onboard in hand luggage. The 100ml rule is still very strictly followed across the world when carrying liquids, but does this rule apply when you are travelling with your little one? The answer is no. This advice comes straight from the government website. When travelling with a baby you’re allowed to take enough baby food, baby milk and sterilised water for the journey. There is no legal limit to how much you can take however check with your airport before you travel. You can carry breast milk in hand luggage even if you’re not travelling with a baby. You cannot carry frozen breast milk in hand luggage. Individual containers of breast milk must hold no more than 2,000ml. Each container will need to be screened at the security point. Holiday time packing and adventures with the girls. When packing and travelling means only taking hand luggage! Luckily Luke and I are well known for our light packing. Having travelled together for three months with just one 65litre backpack and a rucksack. And the same luggage with Dorothy aged 11months old for a 1 month trip, we are well used to thinking ‘what do we REALLY need’. Since having the twins, we were lulled into thinking we needed more but actually a lot of the time, you can pack out of fear for what you might need or just embrace the happenings as they happen. How many times have you thought ‘I didn’t use that’ when you went away. With our great love for our out and about nipper we decided to go with a solo buggy, buggy board and a lovely Tula toddler sling. The last time we travelled with a pram it was damaged and there was no way I was risking that for our nipper! With the option of hand luggage I decided I value my hands more with three small children than pulling along a case and opted for backpacks, hanging off the buggy or increasing their independence by carrying their own bags. The key is allowing lots of time for moving around the airport at toddler pace, although if you saw my last post, we were high speed to the gate! We may be good at travelling light but we just never leave enough time 🫣 We managed it and navigated an all interesting 4.5hr flight, I couldn’t help but think we’re like marmite on a plane you either love us or hate us on the flight! But life’s too short to spend too much time thinking about those that scowled as the plane descended for landing and Dorothy was shouting ‘the planes going down, the planes going down everybody’ 😳 Innocence is a gift and children are part of our world too. Perhaps planes should schedule adult only flights for those who want to be isolated from the world. We arrived safe and the girls happy. ✈️ Flying Solo ✈️ I packed too much! 🤣 💫 The children were only 3 and 5 so I popped a bit of material onto their backpacks so I could keep hold of them both if needs be! 💫 I booked a lounge - cost me about £50 for the 3 of us but it meant we had food and drink, a toilet right there and a space to sit and watch the planes. 💫 Sticker books were great and colouring pens 💫 iPads were fab for our short flight 💫 A tat bag filled with little characters - Paw Patrol for Oliver and cars to push to each other whilst waiting in the queues! 💫 Dobble - we love a game! I did take other things like their vtech cameras and their tonie for listening to stories BUT they really didn’t need it all. I think I panicked because I was flying by myself 🤣 Instead of us all driving to the South of France, which would have been a long way, with a daughter who often gets sick in the car, we used our airmiles to fly and meet my husband down there! Routines are important but so is having fun, doing things as a family and experiencing the culture of the places you are visiting. Teddy is 5 now and the thrill of staying up late is as exciting as the water park to him. It's not unusual in most cultures for children to join their parents for dinner and go to bed a lot later than we do here in the UK. It helps that their children have 'Siestas' in the day which means they can cope with these later nights. For the week that we are here we don't think these later nights will affect the boys too much. We'll soon be back in the UK where the cooler temperatures and darker evenings will help them settle back into their old routines. But for now...When in Rome...! We are currently in Lanzarote, it doesn't actually have a time difference with the UK but we know from experience there will be a difference in timings to our usual routine! We will make small adjustments so that we can have a later dinner and the boys can enjoy the entertainment on offer without missing out on sleep! We also don't particularly want to sit in a dark hotel room in silence at 7pm while the boys sleep! So we've found an approach that works for the whole family. We get so many messages from parents worried about how a holiday might affect their baby's sleep- will it undo all their hard work and create new sleeping patterns? The answer is no, like most things on holiday this will be temporary, just like the all day ice creams! When you return to the familiar sleep environment at home your baby will settle back into their routine. It might take a few days, the flight can also have an effect (whether they slept or didn't sleep!) But just like adults your little one will soon get back into the swing of things. Reisen mit Handgepäck auf Langstrecke.... Da wir nie pauschal Urlaub buchen und inkludierte Gepäckstücke bei den Airlines der Vergangenheit angehören, haben wir uns für etwas mehr Minimalismus entschieden und reisen nur noch mit Handgepäck. Der Vorteil ist, neben den gesparten Kosten, die Zeitersparnis am Flughafen. Wir haben echt viele Bekannte, die uns mit unverständlichen Gesichtsausdrücken anschauen und der Meinung sind, dass das für sie nieeeeee in Frage käme. Aber tatsächlich ist es gar nicht so wild. Wenn man im Urlaub die Möglichkeit hat zu waschen, dann braucht man im Regelfall nicht mehr als einen Handkoffer voll. Bei Langstrecke ist der Vorteil weiterhin, dass die regulären Handgepäckskoffer (also nicht der allseits bekannte kleine “persönliche Gegenstand”) inklusive sind - und da geht schon einiges rein! Mit zwei Kindern und zwei Erwachsenen kommen wir so auf 4 kleine Koffer + 4 persönliche Gegenstände (Rucksack, Tasche, etc.) auf Langstrecke. Und mit Online-Check-In und Ticket auf dem Telefon, brauchen wir am Flughafen nur noch durch die Security und am Zielflughafen gibts auch kein Warten am Kofferband.
