Sand Creek Rangers are Saving Turtles from Dry Season Threats! The first batch of turtles for the 2024 nesting season have started hatching along the Rupununi River in Sand Creek. Since January, rangers from Sand Creek Village have been monitoring the nests to protect them from overconsumption, predators and more. However, with the very dry conditions, the river is very low. This is resulting in the new hatchlings being extremely vulnerable to fish and other predators as soon as they enter the river. To prevent this, the rangers are collecting the hatchlings and relocating them to deeper pools where there is less vulnerability to predation. The hatching period has only just begun so the rangers will continue these actions for another 4 weeks. Congratulations to the Sand Creek rangers for your efforts, dedication and quick thinking! When you’re offered a very rare opportunity to jump start a project that you’ve been already working on, you accept. If you follow the Fly River Turtle Groups on Facebook you should be all too familiar with this pool and its occupants. I was given a very cool opportunity to pick up some full grown adult fly river turtles to join my group here in Florida. The end goal is to house a a decent group outdoors year round and hopefully be one of the few first to breed them. Not saying it has not been done, just maybe not well documented in the US. These animals easily dwarf mine, the current pictures/video don’t do them justice. For the mean time they are currently housed in some large stock tanks. Within the coming few weeks or sooner! I hope to post a follow up video showing their new pond and us introducing the initial breeding group. I have a similar pond project for our large Amazon Yellow Spotted River Turtles which should be complete within the same time period. Broad-shelled turtle (Chelodina expansa) • Weighing up to 7kg with a long neck, broad and deep shell, and giant webbed feet, the Broad-shelled turtle is the largest freshwater turtle in Australia. They are an endangered species inhabiting rivers, creeks and billabongs throughout the Murray-Darling basin across inland south-eastern Australia. Foxes are the main culprit for their decline, digging up nests before they have a chance to hatch. Luckily some incredible research is being done for this species to secure their future. Radiographs in turtles 🐢 Whether it’s a marine or freshwater turtle you will still want to do the same views to fully assess the animal. The standard views to take include: 🐢VD - ventrodorsal. If the turtle is too big, you may need to take several images to capture the whole animal. If it’s a sea turtle, remember to get the tips of the flippers in to check the digits. This view is best to get an overall impression of the turtle, check for fishing hooks or fractures or eggs. 🐢 lateral - right and left. We often place turtles on a clear plastic box or styrofoam box so that the flippers are clear of the body. This is so that we get an unobstructed view of the lungs, skeleton and some parts of the GI tract. Placing them on an elevated box also helps to keep them still- when they do not have their flippers touching the ground they become still. 🐢 Craniocaudal or AP view. Here we point the nose of the turtle towards the X-ray unit so that we get a straight through image of the body. Again using an elevated box, the turtle should relax and put their head down allowing an unobstructed view of the lungs. The trickiest part is getting the turtle straight so that you can evaluate each lung properly. You may see in some images the turtle has a face mask on and this is to help relax the turtle, which in turn keeps them quiet. 在巴西茹魯蒂於亞馬遜河沿岸的 32 個社區，義工多年來自發合作拯救亞馬遜河龜。他們會在繁殖季節監視沙灘，以確保雌性河龜免受偷獵者的傷害，待產卵後將龜蛋從巢穴轉移到圍欄區域進行保護，直至孵化。有些義工從小就開始加入，現在他們帶領其他年輕人一起保護這些河龜。該地區記錄了大約 14 種河龜，由於寵物貿易及野採食用（包括龜蛋和成體）的情況嚴重，牠們的數量急劇下降。除此之外，這些河龜亦受到採礦、水壩建設及伐林等其他威脅。 32 communities in Juruti, Brazil, along the Amazon River, are working together voluntarily to save the Amazonian river turtles. during breeding seasons, the locals monitor the beaches to protect the female turtles from poachers, then transfer the eggs from the nests to a fenced area for protection until they hatch. Some volunteers started joining when they were kids, and now they are leading the group with other young people. There are around 14 species of turtles recorded in the area, Their population has dramatically dropped because of hunting for pet trade and consumption, both eggs and adults. On top of that, there are other threats like mining, dam buildings and deforestation as well.
