One evening, when everyone was supposed to be with their host families, I got a call from one of the girls. She told me they were lost on the way to their house. I don’t remember exactly how I figured out where they were considering that I had no mobile Internet connection, but by some miracle I did. What followed was an hour of walking around trying to find the place where they were staying using my cheap phone with a preloaded map, which was often misleading. How can I have reached my 50s before discovering something so fundamental about myself, namely that I actually quite enjoy travelling alone?! This trip to Venice was supposed to have been with @alexanderlestrangemusic but, due to our son being unwell and one of us needing to stay with him, I was persuaded to come here without him. I really wasn’t sure about it. Shouldn’t I also have stayed at home? Also, I’ve always travelled in groups, either for work with the @swinglesingers or @tenebraechoir , or for holidays with friends and family. It would never have occurred to me go alone. Apart from anything else, I have an appallingly bad sense of direction, as close friends will know (!), and my Italian is not great. I also don’t generally sit in restaurants or bars on my own. Would they manage at home without me for a few days? Mother’s guilt etc… Well, it’s been a revelation. People strike up conversation with you when you’re on your own. Today I have had great chats with an extremely well-dressed, elderly Italian woman who has spent most of her life in the States and gave me her top tip for an incredible view of Venice (which nobody knows and I’m not about to divulge!) Then I met a charming English guy who’s out here studying Italian. We got chatting and discovered we were both at @oxford_uni , albeit about 30 years apart! True to form, I have indeed got lost a lot this week but that’s OK because getting lost in Venice is positively de rigueur! But I’ve also walked miles each day, sat in cafés and written my book, eaten alone in restaurants and not felt self-conscious in the least and, best of all, discovered something new about myself.
