My second stop among distilleries was at Glen Garioch and met our guide Iona who showed us around the distillery with many good stories about how the distillery was founded. The SMWS are such a solid stepping stone for everyone who is into whisky. Would you like it single barrel, cask strength, and as naturally presetned as possible? Then they're the people to go and see! I was in Edinburgh last year when I decided to become a member, and I'm happy to say that it'll be renewed as soon as it can. The trickiest bit, as is with any single barrel selections, is deciding what you want. It took me a good month or two before I could click checkout on things that really appealed to the nerd in me. This is the final of two bottles that we're going to talk about. Glen Garioch - I love this place. Since a late rediscovery of their standard whiskies in 2023, the appreciation train for this very old school Highland distillery is still speeding along the tracks at good pace. A deep, nutty, dry, chocolate style of single malt whisky that has all of this dripping, lingering spice notes that just make it feel almost infinite. This SMWS bottling is sourced from first fill bourbon, cask strength, and all the good stuff! At a price of £130 per bottle, this really hits everything that the SMWS is about for me. Year in Pictures 2023 - April . Released in March but rinsed in April, this was the first time buying bottles of whisky that I was stopped in my tracks. I'd had samples that blew me away but this really made me sit up. Cracking bottling from @adelphi1826 for the AD/Venturers and one I've come to regard as the best of 2023. 🥃❤️ . What I do remember though - and I told him - is that I had tasted this before, from a freshly opened bottle, and it seemed a bit too sharp. But after a couple of months of oxidation, it improved a lot! However, this time, although the bottle was full, it felt just right. It wasn’t the first dram though. Yes, I bought three bottles on the Whiskyzügli (Whisky Train): 2 at the exhibition stand from Whisky Hood and one (1971 / 50 y North of Scotland) online (DeinWhisky.de) whilst on the Train. Glad that they still have it on stock 🥰🥰 Glentauchers 18 y, gray burgundy finished (a bit dry at the end but still special and brilliant. The same can be said about Glen Garioch (which is quite underrated and this one doesn’t deserve to be that!) it’s a fantastic dram. Glen Garioch 21yo 90s Bottling 43% Oh wow, the aroma is fragrance perfume. Lemon grass, hint of fresh oakiness, lemon, fresh fruits and slight hint of smoke. The palate did not live up to its aroma (as expected), it is often the case for watered down ob bottlings. On palate is watery, dominated by soap, with old whisky style soaked wood. This Glen Garioch from @tricarragh is a superb example of a highland whisky that has been matured in a 1st fill bourbon barrel for it’s entire life. Bursting with flavour and delightfully multifaceted. Tasting notes: Nose: A sweet nose of cherry drops, vanilla, Victoria sponge cake with subtle fresh herbal undertones. Water brings more jam, butter cream and a light lemonade effervescence. Taste: Pepper, wood spices initially on the pallet followed by orchard fruits and tinned sweets. With water, darker fruits come to the forefront. I really liked the Glen Garioch 12, but never tried the entry level travel retail Founder’s Reserve. I took advantage of a good discount and got this 1l bottle for only 28 euro - what a bargain! And, unlike many other travel retail bottlings, it’s 48% abv and non chill-filtered, how about that. While it’s not as good as the 12yo, it’s still a very competent, light and pleasant whisky. There are days when you want just that. On the nose, sweet, floral and fruity; red apples, peaches, bananas, a bit of barley sugar, vanilla, hazelnuts, crushed red peppercorns. On the tongue, creamy and floral, and very soft, you wouldn’t guess it’s 48%; maybe a bit herbal as well, but more like dry hay; baked apples and peaches, sponge cake, fried bananas, honey, rose wine, a tiny bit of marzipan and cinnamon. The finish is medium, with baked fruits, herbal notes and a bit of oak. Glen Garioch 1797 Founder’s Reserve. Highland single malt scotch whisky. BERRY BROS & RUDD Spring 2023 Release ~ pr gifted // @berrybrosruddspirits ~ Had the pleasure to sit down with these samples this evening 🥃 The Glen Garioch has an Oloroso finish and probably the loveliest nose out of the four - nutty and intriguing! The palate also has a pleasant nuttiness alongside biscuit notes and soft citrus🌰 The Benriach is fairly punchy at 61.1% and has been finished in PX. It has big fruity tones and a touch of sweet raisins and the texture is slightly oily. Overall quite robust but opens up in a really nice way with some water 🍇 The Glen Moray might be my favourite out of the bunch (alongside the Glen Garioch). It’s been finished in red wine which give a lovely red fruits character that verges on berry cordial notes as well. It’s complex and tasty but quite soft and rounded which I just really enjoyed! 🍷 And finally we have the Ardmore which has that classic peated Ardmore character. Feels fresh and the smoke reminds me of a bonfire. It feels quite ashy and also has an oily fruitiness underneath the smoke 🔥 Which one would you pick?

The Glen Garioch 12 years single malt Scotch whisky has a unique Highland character obtained by maturing the distillate in 2 parts. The first period it matured in American bourbon casks followed by a period in Spanish sherry casks. Both casks give the whisky some unique characteristics, the bourbon makes the whisky softer and the sherry gives it more depth. Some say one of the best 12 year olds out there, full of flavours, long finish and bottled at the sensible strength of 48%... Glen Garioch is perhaps one of the most underrated whiskies, in my opinion. I’ve had this bottle for a long time now, I had a sip every now and then, and enjoyed it every time. Nose: juicy pork steak, pumpkin seed oil, roasted peanuts, oak, Oloroso sherry, sour cherries, salty caramel, vanilla, roasted sunflower seeds. Taste: barley sugar, vanilla, fruit compote, coconut, rum baked quince; floral somehow, moving towards notes of dessert wine. Finish: dry wine, vanilla, quince, salted peanuts. Glen Garioch 12 Years Old. 4th December - Glen Garioch Rare Fayre P.2 I was able to have a quick peak into Ron Welsh's Masterclass yesterday, hearing about the great drams he was serving to folk. All of them were lovely, with the Bordeaux wine and the white Port filled into ex Bordeaux casks being especially good. It was great to have a look round the stalls in the Rare Fayre as well and hear the Garioch Fiddlers play throughout the day. To top it off, showing some keen fans the changes Glen Garioch have made over recent years, and to see their own enthusiasm for the distillery with an independent bottling was a great way to end the day. Thank you again to Glen Garioch and the whole team. Distillery road, home of @glengariochmalt 🥃 I was lucky enough to take in a visit whilst up in Aberdeen recently, and try a good few drams too, from a distillery that I’m perhaps not as familiar with as I should be! The real highlight for me was the 1991 ex-bourbon cask, with plenty of tropical rancio and a wonderful aged sweetness and candied spice. After a virtual ferry trip to Aberdeen, I tracked on to Glen Garioch, a lovely wee distillery that has recently re-established its own malt floor. I did the tour this month and we were lucky enough to meet a chap who’d worked there in the 70’s, his photo as a young man was on the wall next to the mash tun. Now that plans for this year's Edinburgh Whisky Group weekend away have been finalised, I'm enjoying a dram from a bottle picked up during last year's trip. * This Glen Garioch 9 years spent the last few years in a tawny port cask. * On the palate, it's all orange creams and crisp green apples. There's a funky note there too; the sulphur note you tend to get with port cask matured whiskies. * It's a cracking dram. Purchased at the @wmcadenheads warehouse tasting, I can't remember how much I paid for this bottle. But at 59.9%, it's more effective, and probably far cheaper, than putting the heating on.
