First look at @westwardwhiskey Vintner's Cuvรฉe. We talked about this release a bit when we had @anna.distills and @jonboybeverage on @singlemaltfrontier for an interview about Westward in general and their current fun projects. Anna and Jonathan were super excited about this release but they were still in the process of slow-proofing it down and samples were not yet available. What I knew at the time was that Westward does exceptionally well in red wine casks. My favorite of the core releases is the Pinot Cask (45%) and I always wished I could get something that has a little more power behind it. Vintner's Cuvรฉe is aged in Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, and Pinot Noir, AND presented at a slightly higher 48% ABV. It's no slouch on age either at slightly over 5 years. This release is still recognizably Westward with the core profile of stout-y, chocolatey goodness but that's sitting firmly in the background and is wrapped in luscious, bright, juicy red fruits that really drive the profile. The mouthfeel is velvety and awesome. I can really see why everyone was so excited about this release. This is one of the better values to come out of the Westward club in my opinion. If you've been on the fence about joining the Westward Club and you like fruit-forward malts, this is your formal invitation to hop on the wagon and lock in your order of this release while you still can! I have it on good authority that more cool releases are coming soon as well! Absolute joy this afternoon - I found a bottle of the Engenho Novo da Madeira Amarone Cask release. Sometimes the combination of cask and Rum produces a result that far exceeds expectations, and this is one of them. My only regret is that I didnโt buy more bottles whilst I had the chance. Nose: Bright and complex. Ripe, sweet cherries, plums, and mango. Vanilla ice cream, candied orange and lemon. A hint of rose petal perfume. Palate: A fruity, creamy and packed full of maple syrup, and vanilla custard. Finish: Long and lasting. All manner of dark chocolate, prunes are tart and tangy. New cask to fill. ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐พ #englishwhisky . . We take casks selection very seriously. It's the most expensive ingredient in our whiskey and an active cask can have a huge impact on the outcome. Huge impact is what we are after, to stand up to the big flavours of our signature mixed mashbill. This french oak wine cask has had 3 vintages of Italian red wine and one vintage of #englishwine . ๐ท๐ท๐ท๐ท . At around 14% abv, the wine can only extract so much and after 4 or 5 vintages, there's nothing left for a cask to give. However, our spirit enters a cask at 58% abv, extracting more from the oak and some of those lovely fruity flavours from the wine soaked staves. ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐พ . The wine influence is unmistakable, with intensely fruity and slightly sour wine aromas of grapes, white peaches and cherries. There is also a tiny hint of peat, but you really have to be focussed to notice it. (85/100) โช๏ธ ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐: Now, the sunny side of this Benromach becomes much clearer: beautiful berry sweetness, paired with dominant spicy notes, a slight oak bitterness, a nice portion of wine tannins and a minimal influence of smoke. A little bit of everything, never too much, beautifully well-matched, with perfectly integrated alcohol. (87/100) โช๏ธ ๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ก: The aftertaste impresses with tasty wine aromas that linger for a long time. (86/100) โช๏ธ ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง: This is a great whisky! I really like the 46.0% ABV of this bottling. Heute gibt es Kuhstall und Rauch mit Ledaig Rioja Cask 46,3% Nase: Aus der Ferne wirkt er fast wie ein aktueller Uigedail in der Nase. Wenn man aber nรคher rangeht kommt der sรผรe Torfrauch mit den dezenten Ammoniakverbindungen, die gerne mal an den, von vielen geliebten, Kuhstall erinnern. Auch ich bin dem Geruch verfallen. Vor allem wenn dazu noch die Cerealien kommen wie hier. Dann noch die sรผรen roten Frรผchte Mund: Weicher Antritt der angenehm intensiver wird. Dann knallt die Asche rein und dazu kommt ein starker Rotwein. Wรผrze und Zimt fรผllen den Mund angenehm aus.ย Abgang: Der Mund fรผhlt sich immer noch ausgefรผllt an. Die Wรผrze bleibt schรถn stehen. Er steht angenehm lange an durch die Wรผrzigkeit und dann beim Einatmen kommt wieder der Schwall an Rotwein in den Mund. Fazit: Eine gelungene Kombination aus Rauch, Wein und Europรคischer Eiche. Wer auch mal ab und zu einen etwas herberen Geschmack will, sollte hier zulangen. Vor allem bei dem Preis. Man sollte sich aber schon etwas an rauchige Whisky's herangetastet haben, damit man nicht erschlagen wird. Wenn das alles beachtet wird, kann ich hier auch eine klare Kaufempfehlung geben! Zwei vom gleichen Schlag. Starten wir mit dem Bunnahabhain Eirigh na Greine 46,3% Auge: Ein wunderschรถner gelber Honig Ton zieht schรถne dicke Nasen am Glasrand entlang. Nase: Sรผรer Honig und dezente Sherryfrรผchte steigen in die Nase. Dazu etwas wรผrziges Holz und im Hintergrund ein angenehmer Rosรฉ. Alles was er laut Etikett verspricht, nur der Rauch lรคsst sich nicht wahrnehmen durch die Nase. Mit etwas Handwรคrme kommt jetzt ein Geruch von extrem getoasteten Fass dazu, was auf eine dezente Rauchnoten schlieรen lรคsst. Alles in allem aber verdammt lecker in der Nase. Mund: Erst etwas saurer Apfel, dann sรผรer werdend. Jetzt kommt ganz dezenter Rauch dazu, aber wunderbar in den Rest eingebunden. Das Mundgefรผhl ist genau richtig und er lรคsst sich super im Mund verteilen. Eine schรถne Kombination aus Rauch-, Wein- und Sherrynoten. Abgang: Auch im Abgang sind alle Geschmรคcker schรถn vertreten. Er bleibt etwas stehen und hinterlรคsst dann den Rose und den sehr dezenten Rauch stehen. Ganz zum Schluss kommt noch ein kleine Bitternote รผber die man aber bei der Preisklasse gerne hinweg schaut. Zudem ist er so sรผffig, das man sowieso gleich nach trinken mรถchte bevor die Note auftaucht. Fazit: Ein super leckerer Tropfen, der genau das hรคlt was er verspricht. Ideal fรผr Leute die Sherrywhisky mรถgen und die ersten Schritte in die rauchige Ecke wagen wollen. Der Rauch ist hier so dezent verpackt das er kaum auffรคllt und das Geschmacksprofil wunderbar ergรคnzt. Dazu ein super fairer Preis. The Open Special Edition is finished in Chardonnay wine casks. No age statement, not chill-filtered but coloured. The colouring could have been avoided if it had been pre-aged in bourbon casks and finished in white wine casks, but well, if the market likes it that way, so be it. The bottling is presented annually at the golf tournament "The British Open Championship" on the course of the Royal Troon Golf Club. Last year, who remembers, it was a nas roja finish that I really liked. This year I would like to try the cheaper version again and ignore the 24 year old for ยฃ290. Loch Lomond Single Malt Scotch Whisky 152nd Royal Troon The Open Special Edition Chardonnay Wine Casks 46% Vol. Nose: sweet wine pours straight into the nose, sweet apple, pear, light grapes and vanilla custard. The main ageing in bourbon barrels has been beautifully preserved. A light peppery note, melon and a malty sweetness are added. Lovley, light and elegant. With my eyes closed, I see the image of a shiny shellac display case when I smell it. Palate: Soft on the attack, the distillery character is nicely recognisable, sweet from the wine, malty notes. On the palate, the white wine is more pronounced than on the nose, but by no means overpowering. A little melon with vanilla cream and grape must. A spiciness, I mean from the oak, paired with white pepper. The fruit sugar of the grape still lingers a little on the palate. Quite different from the 151' from the previous year. The Roja cask had a completely different direction. This year, the influence is more elegant. Orange peel citrus, graceful oaky notes, and sweetness ensure balance and stimulate the palate. Sweet almondy notes reveal age. With time notes of berries begin to gain intensity. Such fruitiness combined to sweetness brings the idea of red-fruits compote & desserts; amarena cherry ice cream. Spices are then assimilated. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and a hint of aniseed allied to well-integrated โred wine oakinessโ ensure an elegant refinement. A good delivery for a 40% ABV whisky. Well-balanced, complex, a very easy sipping dram. I would certainly go for another bottle โ discontinued expression. Glenmorangie has released a 25 Year Old Pommard Wine Cask Finish expression exclusively at the distillery's new boutique at London's Heathrow Airport Terminal 2.โ โ The expression sees the distillery's first experiments with French Burgundy Pommard red wine casks that are known for its intensity and fruitiness. The red wine comes from the Cote de Beaune appellation and its name pays homage to Pomona, the Roman goddess of abundance - therefore you'll find a depiction of the goddess on the accompany wooden presentation box.โ โ โ โThe red wines of Pommard are among my very favourite wines in the world. And hoping to bring their classic, fruity red burgundy notes to Glenmorangie, I first started experimenting with Pommard wine casks around 2008. Created from a small number of casks, and with just 1,000 bottles available, Glenmorangie Pommard Cask Finish is truly one of the most fabulous and delicious wine-cask finishes ever to emerge from Glenmorangie.โ โ When I first tasted it, I could hardly believe its complexity. The aroma is very perfumed, with notes of lemon sherbet, plums, cherries and honey. The taste is like a basket of fruits: red, juicy apples, honeydew melon, crystallized ginger and a hint of milk chocolate.
