Chang’E is the Chinese goddess of the moon. Ascended to live there for eternity for finding her husbands hidden vile of immortality under the bed. She ascended to live in the moon next to the Moon Rabbit.🐇 who would spend eternity pounding the herbs for medicine alongside her. For as long as I can remember I always saw a rabbit in the moon. 🌒 etched out in the dark blotches that lay on the surface. But I never understood why or if anyone else could see it? Recently I’ve been pulled to learn more about my ancient ancestors that roamed the lands of mystical ancient China. Always enticed by the sounds, the shapes and the smells of devotional rituals to the spirits, the deity’s and the nothingness in between. As a Chinese descendent whose great grandparents emigrated from the mainland in search of some promised dream. I didn’t know much of what ancient china used to be, although I do know that it ran strong in my the women before me. Spiritual see’ers, mystics and intuitives, Body workers and mediums. The women in my lineage were magical. Have gifts to read between realms. Religions, capitalist society and Industrial Revolution have killed the inanimate elements of ancient cultures. A recent podcast by @the_emerald_podcast outlines the history of the destruction of the mystic within not just ancient china but the world. Although so many rituals and practices from long ago remain in modern day Chinese society - so much of it was lost. I went in search of this connection when I moved back to the motherland. Little did I know that it would have taken more then just my physical presence to find these hidden secrets. But touching ground there was the seed I needed to plant to grow my roots back to my lineage. I gave birth to my first child on the land that my great grandparents immigrated from. I wonder what they were thinking when they saw my path unfold. It feels quite surreal. A land so familiar yet so strange. In one such story, Chang'e was once a divine servant to the Gods in Heaven. She was banished down to Earth for breaking an invaluable Jade pot. Upon the Earth, she married a man who was once an epic hero but became a cruel and oppressive ruler. From him, she stole the elixir of immortality and escaped to become the Goddess of the Moon.⠀ ⠀ 🎉 Each year there is a celebration centered around the memory of Chang’e called the “Mid-Autumn Festival." Moon cakes are eaten and offered as gifts to friends and neighbours and enjoyed together. 🌕 Chang'e is the ancient Chinese goddess of the moon and is the subject of many legends in Chinese mythology. In one such story, Chang'e was once a divine servent to the Gods in Heaven. She was banished down to Earth for breaking an invaluable Jade pot. Upon the Earth, she married a man who was once an epic hero, but became a cruel and oppressive ruler. From him, she stole the elixir of immortality and escaped to become the Goddess of the Moon. 🎉 Each year on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, there is a celebration centered around the memory of Chang’e called the “Mid-Autumn Festival”. Moon cakes are eaten and offered as gifts to friends and neighbours and enjoyed together.
