Collection: East Palace, Spring/Summer 2019 Ensemble (dress and undergarments): silk and gold-thread blend; embroidered with silk, silver, and gold thread, embellished with sequins and Swarovski crystals and rhinestones Earrings: copper, resin cabochons, faux pearls and Swarovski rhinestones Guo Pei has been committed to celebrating Eastern aesthetics. Unsurprisingly, dragons remain one of the most important motifs in this collection. Taking on the slender form imagined in the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), known for their power of metamorphoses, the five colors of the dragons--black, green, gold, silver and red—allude to the ancient Chinese philosophy of Five Elements and Yin/Yang. The designer also draws inspiration from ancient iconography: whimsical green dragons; mythical birds such Rosefinch (God of the South), three-legged Golden Bird (symbolizing the sun), and Phoenix (king of all birds); the basaltic pythons (embodying the God of the North); and mighty unicorns. Guo summons all the auspicious animals from Eastern folklores and recreates them as symbols of the future, blurring the boundary between human sphere and mythological realm. Here are 10 things to know about the inspiration behind the dress, and what went into making it. 1. The piece’s title, Da Jin (Magnificent Gold), is fitting, as the entire surface is embroidered with gold thread from India. 2. The garment took 2 years to complete. 3. Guo Pei and her team spent over 50,000 hours on its construction. 4. Da Jin was the grand finale look at Guo Pei’s first full couture runway show, Samsara (Life Cycle), in 2006. 5. It was inspired by both a gold-embroidered military uniform worn by Napoleon Bonaparte at the Musée de l'Armée in Paris and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. 6. The dress represents the sun and the rebirth of China after the Cultural Revolution. 7. The piece is made up of 29 individual vertical panels with a repeating lotus pattern. 8. Da Jin is grand in scale, measuring more than 11½ ft long by 9 ft wide. 9. The accompanying headdress, choker, and cuff bracelets are made of copper and covered in Swarovski crystals and rhinestones. 10. Because of its size, Da Jin had to be put together directly in the gallery at the Legion of Honor and took 11 people to install. Each of Guo Pei’s collections begins with an idea or theme. Similar to the ballet "The Nutcracker", this collection of "Amazing Journey in a Childhood Dream" embarks on the journey in a little girl's deep sleep. In her dream, her dolls all come alive in colorful silken outfits. The girl herself is groomed in the most magnificent gown of all – purely in white, with a wide skirt composed of hundreds of layers of tissue-thin silk, a jeweled belt, and a jacket with a high collar that frames her face like a Tudor princess. The train of the gown, fit for a fairy tale wedding, is covered with beaded and embroidered scrolls, flowers, and butterflies. Some of my favorite visual moments from the extraordinary Guo Pei: Fashion, Art, Fantasy 郭培：时装之幻梦 @aucklandartgallery @guopei @asiancouturefederation I consider myself fashion ignorant, but I was lucky enough to work early in my career on the Versace exhibition and developed enormous admiration for the incredible craftsmanship and precision in textiles and the construction of a garment. Guo Pei is next level in this regard, elevating garments to Fra Angelico levels of detail and love for the craft. After producing and curating several fashion exhibitions in China, I'm still fashion ignorant, but I know a master of the art when I see it. Guo Pei is a Chinese designer who gained much public attention when Rihanna wore her incredible gold gown to a Met Gala. (She was already a well-known, sought after designer in China.) The stunning red gown features a long train with elaborate bodice work & headpiece. The pink also has an elaborately stoned cross on the bodice and includes the matching hand jewelry, skirt beading, and an incredible glass bubble headpiece. My favorite detail of the blue one was the embroidery and blue stoning. The over-long ruched sleeves are really lovely. Not being big on fashion, I was unfamiliar with Guo Pei until a friend recommended the exhibit “Guo Pei: Art of Couture” at the Bowers Museum in Santa Anna, California. (What a great recommendation!) Guo Pei creates elaborately detailed gowns that draw on her Chinese heritage. Growing up during the Cultural Revolution (when exquisite fashion was definitely not a thing), Pei’s grandmother told her stories about the lavishly embroidered clothing of imperial China’s Qing Dynasty. Those stories must have seemed like fairy tale fantasies, but they left a lasting impression. Today Pei is known for elaborately embellished dresses that both look back to the past and are unique, intricate works of art. Each takes tens of thousands of hours – up to 50,000 – for her team of beaders, embroiders, and other artisans to create and embellish. Although she’s a favorite of Chinese stars who pay enormous sums to wear her creations, Americans are most likely to recognize her work from Rihanna’s dress for the 2015 Met Gala. (A dress that took Pei and her team two years to complete.) The exhibit at the Bowers features 40 pieces, many of which had been in storage since appearing on the runway. They include: 1. Guo Pei (born 1967) is China’s most renowned couturier. She is best known for her opulent couture creations worn by many celebrities. Guo is the first born-and-raised Asian designer to be invited to become a guest member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. In 2016, Time listed her as one of the World's 100 Most Influential People. Despite the otherwise oppressive fashion enforced in China at that time, she still went to study and graduate from Beijing Second Light Industry School with a degree in fashion design in 1986. Guo Pei says that she strived for something more as the fashion demand grew in China as well. In 1997 she launched her own label and atelier, Rose Studio. When her Guo began to grow, she received commissions to create styles for the 2008 Summer Olympics as well as the annual Spring Festival Galas put on by China Central Television (CCTV). One of her best-known designs is the canary yellow dress that Rihanna wore to the MET Gala in 2015. It took approximately 50,000 hours over two years for her design team to create and weighed about 25 kg (55 lb) on completion. This exposure made Guo more recognizable among Western audiences. In July 2015, she held her first solo exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
