Setsuko’s Drops 🍬 “Why do fireflies have to die so soon?”… Based on the Sakuma Drops candy shown in Grave of the Fireflies. This is the most personal piece in the collection for me. Daniel helped me think of this idea to honor the main characters and a recurring theme/image in the film. Back in middle or high school, I had a friend who told me you had to watch Grave of the Fireflies to be a true Studio Ghibli fan, and they had personal/historical reason to say this, but it was imprinted in my brain. Years went by, I had seen several other films, but couldn’t bring myself to watch this one yet.. I didn’t want to be sad. **TW** Child Loss Fast forward years later, a member of my family encountered an unexpected infant loss, and it changed us all forever. They would be turning 9. Another several years forward and I knew Graves of the Fireflies was an important film in terms of the realities of war, and for Japan. I also knew that I didn’t want to watch it alone because it would affect me. So I asked and friends agreed to watch it together, and although very different circumstances, I have seen a casket the size of the basket used in the grave and it completely took me back to that moment. I sobbed. ** Safe to read ahead** It was a film I needed and allowed me to process my grief, and a multitude of feelings, emotions and became a milestone in my journey of healing and being more available to slowly start talking about what happened more, but also to better be there for my family. Although I cannot use these stitch markers in the way intended yet, and even if films like this one are not an option for you - this is my way of sharing a sliver of what it has brought me, to you. ATEŞ BÖCEKLERİNİN MEZARI Filmin içeriğinden söz etmeden önce söylemek istediğim birkaç şey var sevgili okuyucu. bu yalnızca bir film değil. Bu, hayatın en acımasız hale geldiği noktanın, acının ne olduğunu öğrenmesinden en çok rahatsızlık duyduğum ,çocukların, gözünden anlatıldığı; tüm insanlığın en büyük utancı olan savaşların yıkımını, suratlarımıza bir tokat gibi indiren bir hayat öyküsü. Hikayemiz, ikinci dünya savaşı sırasında savaş meydanında milyonlarca ateş böceğine mezar olan Japonya da geçmekte. Hikayemiz ilk sahnesinde ölmekte olduğunu gördüğümüz Seita ismindeki genç ana karakterimiz ve daha nice gencin bir depoda ölümü beklediği anları izleyiciye aktarmasıyla başlıyor. Filmin ilerleyen dakikalarında görevlinin umursamaz bir tavırla ‘bu da gidici’ diyerek duygusuzca Seita nın üzerini araması ve eskimiş bir şeker kutusunu fırlatması ile hikayemiz anlatılmaya başlanıyor. Meyve şekeri kutusunun önemini ve görevli kutuyu fırlatınca içinden dökülen küllerin öneminden sonra söz edeceğiz. Seita nın ağzından: ‘bugün öldüğüm gündü.’ Ana karakterlerimiz olan Setsuko ve Seita kardeşlerin savaşta bir bombardıman sırasında annelerini kaybetmelerinin ardından Seita nın, küçük kardeşi Setsuko ya bunu söyleyemediği için teyzelerinin yanına yerleşerek kardeşini ve kendini koruma çabasını görüyoruz. Kardeşler arasındaki ilişki konu bir savaş olsa da çocuk yalnızca çocuktur dememe yetiyor. Ancak büyükler çocukların hikayelerinin yön bulmasında çok etkilidir ve kötü yetişmiş büyükler, çocuklar için ölümcül dozda birer zehirdir. Teyzelerinin çocukları çok sık baskılaması üzerine Seita bu duruma daha fazla tahammül etmek istemez ve küçük kız kardeşini de alarak bir sığınak bulup orada yaşamaya karar verir. Bu noktada benim için filmin en çarpıcı sahnelerinden biri yaşanır: teyzeleri ile yaşadıkları süre boyunca kabuslar görüp üzgün olan Setsuko, evden ayrıldığı sırada kahkahalar atmaktadır. Teyzenin, arkalarından bakarken gözlerinde beliren şey şaşkınlık mıdır yoksa utanç mı, şimdilik ben de bilmiyorum.
