Book #25 of 2024. "The Green Mile" by Stephen King. 4/5 rating. 536 p. This is an incredible book about a giant of man, with quite a gift that gets sent to Death Row. John Coffey was (spoiler alert! wrongfully) accused of a brutal double murder of two young girls. When he gets sent to prison, to await electrocution, Paul Edgecombe meets this sad behemoth who has seemingly only ever wanted to help others. John heals multiple people throughout the book, but eventually his sentence catches up with him. Even though there is evidence of John's innocence, his being black in the South in the 1930s means there's no hope for him. This book was beautiful and moving. Something I wouldn't necessarily have expected in the backdrop of murderers, rapists and arsons waiting for execution. Stephen King is amazing for the depth of emotions he can make you feel for his characters. I especially loved the statements about what John suffers through being able to feel and know the pain people impart and feel. This is definitely a great read if you're looking for a place to start into some King. "I'm rightly tired of the pain I hear and feel, boss. Ce magnifique drame fantastique, nous retrouvons un superbe casting : HANKS, DUNCAN et GREER entourés de David MORSE, Sam ROCKWELL, Doug HUTCHINSON, James CROMWELL, Michael JETER, Graham GREENE, Barry PEPPER, Bonnie HUNT, Gary SINISE, William SADLER, Jeffrey DEMUNN, Harry Dean STANTON, Eve BRENT, ou encore Patricia CLARKSON. Le casting nous offre une prestation bouleversante dans cette adaptation de l'oeuvre de Stephen KING. DUNCAN nous offre sans nul doute la meilleure prestation de sa carrière aux côté de superbes acteurs, gentils ou méchants. Ce qui est exceptionnel dans ce film c'est que chaque personnage (ou presque) peut nous faire avoir pitié de lui, même s'il a fait des crimes horribles. L'ambiance sombre est modulée par des éclairages industriels et une lumière naturelle jaune. La musique est très belle et rythme parfaitement le film. Les décors sont assez limités mais ne sont pas un frein à l'intrigue, bien qu'elle s'étale sur 3 heures. Je ne vois pas quoi regretter en dehors de quelques incohérences scénaristiques (je pense à la ceinture de Billy WHARTON dans sa cellule par exemple) que ne verrons que les yeux les plus avertis. The Green Mile I read this special story about 3 years ago now I think, and it's never left my mind. The movie is amazing also, but this is a special one by SK. The characters feel as real as you and me, I'll never forget them all. One of the most perfect books he has written in my opinion. It's easy in my top 5 by him but I'm not sure where, maybe 2nd place. I read the serial paper back editions and I seemed to fly though them. Couldn't stop turning the pages! It will forever hold a place in my heart, and I believe this is SK at his very best in terms of story telling. Even if you have seen the movie, and not read this one, then please treat yourself to something that will burn itself into your heart and stay there as scar. It's an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. It really does show SK's story telling ability, and if you've never read him, I suggest trying this one. Masterpiece. Mai un ruolo da protagonista, perché come sappiamo bene, ci sono volti perfetti per il ruolo da comprimari o comprimarie. Eppure, tutti almeno una volta, sanno di aver visto questo volto in un film, che fosse un importante pellicola d'autore (Brian De Palma, Woody Allen) o una commedia romantica in cui interpretare i ruoli secondari ("One Day") oppure film drammatici in cui donare sempre l'espressione giusta ad un personaggio da cornice ("Tutti Gli Uomini Del Re", "Il Miglio Verde"). Magari, con difficoltà ci si ricorda il nome ma questo voto, ha familiarizzato con il grande pubblico ormai da decadi e decadi fa'. Patricia Clarkson finisce in questa nostra rubrica perché è incredibile per un'attrice della sua esperienza e con la sua lunga carriera, non essere mai riuscita ad agguantare la performance da protagonista che tanto si agogna nel mondo attoriale di Hollywood. Paul Edgcombe arbetar 1932 på fängelset Cold mountain, i block E för dödsdömda fångar som väntar på avrättning genom elektriska stolen. Tillsammans med kollegorna Brutal, Dean och Harry (samt den sadistiska Percy) gör de vad de kan för att hålla fångarna lugna sin sista tid i livet, innan de går den gröna milen mot den fruktade stolen. En dag kommer John Coffey, en svart, gigantisk fånge som är dömd för våldtäkt och mord på två småflickor. Paul och de andra märker att John är annorlunda än de andra fångarna. Är han skyldig? Det händer saker som kommer förändra livet för dem alla. Närapå ett mästerverk. Stephen King är en favorit hos mig, även om t.om. jag kan uppleva att han svajar ibland. Inte här. I berättelsen förflyttar vi oss verkligen till amerikanska 30-talet. Jag älskar karaktärerna. Stämningen är varm, samtidigt som det i bakgrunden finns en otäck känsla. Elektriska stolen är i boken bakom en dörr i ett skjul, det känns lite så för mig som läsare också: boken berättar om en udda vardag där det lurar något hemskt bakom dörren. Detta är ingen skräckbok som King är känd för, det är ett drama med vissa övernaturliga inslag. De skrämmande delarna består av det som människor gör mot varandra. Det är verkligen mer otäckt än alla monster i världen. En bok som var svår att släppa. Riktigt bra! Er gebeurden destijds dingen die voor de tijd van toen heel gewoon waren, waarbij je tegenwoordig met open mond en vol verbazing zit terug te lezen. Je kunt de hopeloosheid van de onschuldigen voelen als van diegene die getroffen of beïnvloed werden door de misdaad en het resultaat van het proces. Dit is een verhaal waarbij het jouw emoties alle kanten opbrengt. Verdrietige, grappige en hartverwarmende momenten, maar ook enkele momenten van walging tegen bepaalde personages. King laat met dit boek zien dat hij sindsdien al talent had voor het creëren van realistische personages. Elk personage had een karaktereigenschap of kwaliteit waarmee je het kan identificeren. Het zij persoonlijk of via persoonlijke ervaring met anderen. De auteur slaagt erin om je medegevoel te geven met enkele van de meest beruchte mensen op aarde. Tegelijkertijd brengt hij de ongemakkelijke realiteit naar voren dat er ook monsters onder ons 'normale' mensen zijn. De krachtige beschrijvingen en de meeslepende vertelstijl maken het onmogelijk om dit boek weg te leggen. Het is een van de verhalen die je bijblijft lang nadat je het boek hebt uitgelezen. Er zit een vleugje bovennatuurlijke elementen in verwerkt, maar niet in horrorstijl om je te beangstigen. Dit is wel een andere soort boek wat wij van King gewend zijn, maar de grote leidraad is er wel in verweven: een diepe duik in menselijke relaties, verlossingsbogen, de welbekende strijd tussen goed en kwaad in een soort van magische wereld die zich net onder de onze verbergt. De oorspronkelijke versie die ik vroeger had gelezen bestond uit meerdere delen, waarbij er bij elk volgende deel een korte samenvatting van het vorige deel werd verteld. In deze editie zag ik dat ook weer terugkomen. Het is niet storend, maar het had ook weggelaten kunnen worden. Ik raad je zeker aan om deze eens op te pakken, zelfs als je de film al hebt gezien. Het verhaal is zowel hartverwarmend als hartverscheurend.

Note : 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ « La ligne verte », film de Frank Darabont (1999) 🍿 🎥 Disponible sur Netflix Avis : Je ne regarde quasi jamais les adaptations ciné des livres que j’aime (trop peur d’être déçu). « La ligne verte » est probablement mon livre préféré de Stephen King, et pourtant… quel film, quel classique. Vu à sa sortie, il m’avait déjà beaucoup fait pleurer. Et ça a encore été le cas. Et dire que justement à sa sortie, il avait été descendu par les critiques… En même temps, le combo de départ était parfait : un scénario de Stephen King, Frank Darabont à la réal (quelques années après avoir brillamment adapté Les Évadés), et Tom Hanks (qui a éclaboussé de son talent les années 90) en rôle principal. Le film a beau durer 3 heures, on ne s’ennuie pas une seule seconde. C’est fort, parfois drôle, émouvant, puissant, et triste. Aussi beau qu’injuste. Rares sont les films qui arrivent à faire se côtoyer toutes ces émotions de manière si harmonieuse. Un film incroyablement humain, qui marque le spectateur, qui se finit en apothéose, un feu d’artifices d’émotions (oui, j’ai beaucoup dit « émotions », mais ça le qualifie vraiment). Avec ce personnage de John Coffey qui est entré dans la légende (magnifiquement interprété par Michael C Clark).
