We are BUILDING a community garden!! The BCCD was awarded several grants to implement a community garden in the City of Reading that will act like a demonstration garden for others looking to start their own. Monday we finally broke ground! This project is in partnership with Café Esperanza, and Hope Lutheran Church and is located on TWO vacant lots on Front Street. Food grown at this site will go to the Cafe as well as to the Church to feed the community. BCCD will provide community workshops and educational opportunities to share our love of growing with all of you! The site will have a small hoop house, and A LOT of raised beds to grow fresh produce. Securing healthy, fresh food for community members one small plot at a time! You can’t be truly free if you can’t/don’t grow your own food. Why? What you gonna eat when those “organic” grocery stores(large corporation that are government funded) disappear? If you don’t have a source of reproducible food you aren’t gonna have a choice but to beg the government to feed your family. It’s too easy not to do it. Don’t have a big yard? So what? That’s an excuse. Use raised beds, that you build yourself. Don’t have any yard? So what, another excuse. Buckets work fine. Better yet, move. Find a place with a yard, preferably out of the city. It’s so easy even a caveman can do it. 1st picture- Pole snaps in the first bed, tomatoes in the 3rd. 2nd bed will be cucumber when I fill it back up. 2nd picture- Yellow onions in the first bed. Jalapeño and bell pepper in second bed. Tomatoes in the 3rd bed. 3rd picture- Pole butter beans in the first bed. Cabbage in the second bed. Tomatoes in the 3rd bed(I know, a lot of tomatoes, but we love them) 4th picture- trying a new way to raise potatoes. 5th picture- silver queen sweet corn 6th picture- chickens for eggs, and meat if needed. Also freezer full of farm raised local beef, deer I killed, and pork I raised. I can help anyone interested get started. Building beds, what to plant, when to plant it, whatever you need.
