The Cutting Garden - it stopped raining so at last got my annual seeds sown direct and planted out some of the cutting garden seedlings I’d sown earlier under glass - Cosmos (risky!) Cornflowers, Eschscholzia, Papaver/poppies, Antirrhinum, Bupleurum, Ammi, Briza maxima, Sweet William, Acquilegia, Nigella, Nasturtium - Sweet Peas and Molucella laevis plus some others such as Zinnia and Dahlia will go in later. This is Yarrow. It’s an herbaceous perennial that is hardy in USDA zones 2-9. The plant’s hemostatic properties (the ability to stem bleeding) made it a top medication of choice for treating war injuries in ancient times. Today, advanced bandaging and pressure is the method used for serious injuries. However! This is a great plant to grow for every household. Dried and ground leaves can be stored in airtight containers and pulled out in the event children (or you) sustain a minor injury that causes bleeding. Today, it is still taken internally to reduce or stop internal bleeding. Yarrow flowers are a strong diaphoretic and can be taken as a tea to inducing a sweat and breaking a fever. The flowers are the highest in the volatile oil during dry weather. ‼️ Warnings: yarrow is often a safe remedy, but should not be taken regularly. Always do your own research and consult with your doctor. 🌿Planting specifications: plants can spread quickly, providing a little extra growing room is advised. Yarrow is fairly tolerant and can do well, even in poor soils. The plant will perform well in rich garden soils, but often prefers sandy, gravelly loam.

I love Marigolds. I love the flowers, the colour, the scent and the fact that they are so easy to grow. Do not enjoy the fact that they are a slugs favourite supper though. I saw a variety called Dandy Stripe last year and I knew I wanted them for this summer. I have only just discovered that pinching out the tops is a good idea with Marigolds to make them fuller, so that was a quick 5 minute job today. We have buds already and one flower which is gorgeous but it’s now chopped off. I have never pinched out before and they’ve always been a good display so we shall see this year. Around this time of year, my bud vases are full of Hepatica seed heads, instead of flowers. When you grow many Hepatica in pots, you have to take care of them differently than if you were growing them in the ground. This time of year, I cut the old leaves and remove the seed heads that I didn’t use for crosses so that the seeds won’t drop all over the pots and mix with Hepatica I labeled. This is an important task and takes a month or two to accomplish. Hepatica seeds will drop when they mature, but if they are not quite ready, you can cut the stems and put them in the vase, and the seed heads will continue to mature. There are many things you can learn from these seed heads. These are Japanese Hepatica. 1: Bud vases with Hepatica seed heads. 2: Only three seeds are fertilized. The stigmas have a limited time to accept pollen; if it is too early or too late, they won’t set seeds. 3: Also only a few seeds are mature, every stigma has a slightly different timing for accepting pollen, so this happened. 4: Normally Hepatica have three bracts, but there are four or even more bracts occasionally. 5: Catching the seeds that fell before I was able to collect them. I get really nice flowers from these seeds every year, so I can’t waste any seeds. 6: Some dark stigmas of Japanese Hepatica will have dark colored seeds, also if there are different pollens on the same flower, it can create different colors of seeds. 7: These two are from the same plant, but different pollen was used. 8: Even on seeds from same stake, different pollen makes a slightly different seed color. #hepatica #hepaticas #hepaticaseeds #growfromseed

Seedling update: annual flowers (mostly) that are starting to get exposure to real sunlight and outdoor air on the patio chairs as they get ready to move into the yard. Calendula, hollyhock, Johnny jump up, marigold, crocosemia; petunia… not natives but all heirloom varieties, mostly from Seed Savers Exchange, some saved / gifted. Filler for all the empty space between immature shrubs and perennials, attract pollinators and pest controllers. Inside in the seedling closet the nightshades are still hanging out. Some notes to my future self: 1) the municipal compost is great for the seedlings but pre-treat it with BT “mosquito bits” as it tends to harbor a lot of fungus gnat eggs. This is a bacteria (not technically a pesticide) that kills the larvae of mosquitoes & gnats. 2) For the tomatoes: tall plastic drink cups are the best. Pre-drill holes in the bottom for uniform bottom watering / drainage, but 1 tall cup holds as much dirt as 3 small fruit cups with much less surface area & 2x depth. I care about surface area at this stage because space on the light shelves is limited, and depth is good for root development. I am seeing multiple tomato plants looking perfectly robust together in a single Starbucks tall cup. It’s also less work as it doesn’t require so much transplanting. Just start half full of dirt, and add more dirt as the plants grow to get more roots along the stem. 3) the tubs of tiny-seed flowers - growing in old cookie containers 3-5” deep are doing really well! Then again so are the tiny seed things in little fruit cups. The story behind the creation of the remembrance flower, the poppy, is rooted in the devastation of World War I. The battlefields of Flanders were once beautiful meadows, but after years of fighting, they were turned into desolate wastelands. However, in the spring of 1915, bright red poppies began to bloom amidst the destruction. This inspired Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae to write his famous poem, "In Flanders Fields." Later, a woman named Moina Michael read the poem and was moved by its message. She decided to wear a red poppy as a symbol of remembrance for the fallen soldiers of World War I. This tradition was adopted by the American Legion, and soon spread to other countries around the world. In 1922, Major George Howson established the Poppy Factory in Richmond, London, England, with the aim of providing employment opportunities for disabled ex-servicemen. The factory's production line was thoughtfully designed to enable veterans who had been wounded to assemble poppies using just one hand.
