There's a popular theme right now among homeschoolers that is basically "if kids didn't have to sit at a desk all day they wouldn't have ADHD". It's infuriating. Here's the truth: đ ADHD symptoms can be more easily managed in a homeschool setting, but they don't vanish. Ask any homeschooled child with ADHD or a parent raising one (like me). đ ADHD is diagnosed at higher rates and younger ages than ever before. That doesn't mean it's not real. That's because researchers know a lot more about it AND a high prevalence of screens and early schooling is contributing to false ADHD symptoms. It would be more helpful for these people to say "sometimes people think their child has a neurological disfunction, but before ADHD testing, it might be helpful to see if those symptoms improve with environmental change" instead of just discounting a medical fact. If you're homeschooling an ADHD kid share in the comments or messages what you think about this current trend! - - #adhd #adhdkids #homeschoolingADHD #homeschool #homeschooling #homeschoolcontent #homeschooladvocate #homeschoolmom #homeschoollife #homeschoolbenefits #homeschoollife #homeschoolmama #homeschoolencouragement #neurodivergent
You're tired of homeschooling feeling like a struggle. The power struggles are exhausting, but it seems like the only way to get your child to do any work at all. Instead of sleeping, you spend hours looking for a packaged curriculum or supplements that will make everything better. But, it never really does. You canât remember a time when you werenât worried and anxious about your childâs learning and future. I really get it. Because our amazing neurodivergent homeschoolers experience the world and process information in their own unique way, we have to provide homeschooling experiences that are as unique as they are. It can be really hard to know how to do that, especially when it looks so different from one unique homeschooling family to the next. You want homeschooling to be about the joy of learning, connection, and collaboration. But youâre not sure how to make that happen. You need a framework for homeschooling your individual learner⌠â¤ď¸Thatâs empowering, not overwhelming â¤ď¸That shows you how to create the right homeschooling experience for your family â¤ď¸That brings you and your homeschooler closer together. If this has been missing from your homeschooling, youâre invited to todayâs masterclass. During the masterclass, youâll discover a simple 3-part framework to: â Identify and fix common mistakes parents make when homeschooling neurodiverse and high needs kids â Replace resistance and power struggles with connection and collaboration â Feel empowered and confident about homeschooling for years to come Register to join live and access the replay at your convenience at the link in the bio and comments. I love to share my clientsâ successes so you know whatâs possible for your family. đ I worked with a client who started homeschooling for high school. Her homeschooling journey was high stakes from day one. She didnât know if her daughter would learn enough at home to have a chance of going to a good college. Like most of my clients, she was worried and anxious when we had our first call. After working together, hereâs what she had to say: âI am someone who is somewhat new to the homeschooling adventure, Afsaneh has been the voice of reason and guiding light for me. She shares information, advice, and techniques clearly and concisely. Her wisdom has been an essential part of our homeschooling success!â She already had what she needed to be an amazing homeschooling parent for her child, she just didnât have a framework for how to use what she knew to make homeschooling work for them both. â¤ď¸ I want you to feel confident to use everything you know about your unique homeschooler in order to create a homeschooling experience that allows them to thrive. â¤ď¸ If this sounds like what youâre looking for, youâre invited to our [free] masterclass. During the masterclass, weâll: â Cover 3 common mistakes parents make when homeschooling neurodivergent kids â Identify any gaps in your homeschooling practice â Discover a simple 3-part framework that you can apply to your homeschooling so there is greater engagement with learning and connection Register to save your spot and access the replay at the link in the comments and bio. I used to get worried if we didnât accomplish a lot during learning time. Iâd become anxious that my child wasnât learning enough, or would fall behind. The awesome thing about learning and development is that theyâre both happening all of the time, even if you canât see it. â¤ď¸ While it may seem that one day your child has grown 3 inches or can suddenly read one day, it actually took time to get them to this point. And for much of it, it takes your guidance. When you look at the big picture and how one skill builds on another, itâs easier to give yourself grace when not much âschoolingâ takes place for a day or two. It helps to be clear on why the plan wasnât followed? Was your child under the weather? Was there something off about the plan? Once you feel confident and empowered to take a look at your homeschooling practice and make some changes, everyoneâs relationship to learning at home and to one another changes. â¤ď¸ If this sounds like what youâre looking for, itâs time to take action. Sometimes homeschooling doesnât go well and I have to stop and be my own coach. I have to go through the Communicate. Plan. Connect Framework to discover what went wrong and what I can do about it. The other day my child didnât want to do a writing project. Weâd been talking about the project for a while, so I was thrown by their resistance. My unique homeschooler is a preteen now complete with headphones, rude responses, and a lack of interest in most of what I say. đđ It can be a little much for me sometimes. We have lots of conversations and I use the Communicate part of my framework to help increase self-awareness and keep our connection and relationship moving forward. However, in this case I focused on communication to get past the resistance. But, many hours later I realized that their resistance wasnât a lack of interest on their part, it was actually a planning issue. I explained the project and expected my child to do it. I even wrote the structure out for them. However, it wasnât broken down enough for them to do the writing. I hadnât planned taking into account their anxiety and overwhelm. I didnât love how my child expressed their resistance, but the ultimate responsibility for the project going awry was mine. The good news is, once I realized that I could modify things for the following day and homeschooling got back on track. đĽłđĽł Being able to see whatâs going on in the moment and knowing what to do about it is hard. It takes skills and knowledge that most of us donât have before becoming parents and homeschooling our unique kids. Thatâs okay if you donât know yet. Iâm here to support you on your homeschooling journey. Now is a great time to register for Fridayâs masterclass. During the masterclass, weâll: â Cover 3 common mistakes parents make when homeschooling neurodivergent kids â Identify any gaps in your homeschooling practice â Discover a simple 3-part framework that you can apply to your homeschooling so there is greater engagement with learning and connection Register at the link in the comments and bio. No matter how difficult homeschooling feels right now, there are some important things to remember. Your child loves you so much. Your child wants to learn and make you proud. You are doing the best you can right now. And so is your unique homeschooler. If homeschooling is a struggle for both of you, that means some changes need to be made. You are key to your childâs development and to their learning. You create their learning conditions. You decide what they are going to learn and how. It may not feel like you have control over much these days, especially if your child refuses to do assignments. But, you have so much power. You have the power to uncover whatâs not working about homeschooling. And you have the power to find solutions, including learning a new approach to your childâs learning. â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ You are not alone in figuring this out. Iâm here to support you every step of the way. â¤ď¸ The first step is registering for my [free] masterclass this Friday. I know the time might not be great for you, so Iâm making sure youâll get access to the replay to watch at your convenience. So many of my clients tell me how disconnected they feel from their homeschoolers. When homeschooling is full of resistance, power struggles, and explosion, itâs hard to feel the connection. My clients choose to work with me because they know homeschooling isnât what theyâd hoped it would be and they are concerned about their childrenâs learning. They donât expect their connection to their kids to improve so much, or so quickly. This was especially true for one client. Each time she asked her autistic child to do an assignment, her child would start crying. She felt so badly that she decided to back off completely. She didnât know what to do to move forward. From working together in my 1:1 coaching program, she discovered how to put in place structures that allowed her unique homeschooler to feel the space to truly connect to their learning for the first time. She was thrilled when her child started coming up with their own ideas for projects. She saw her child being responsible for their learning. And she saw that her child was learning more than she had originally thought. We choose to homeschool so our kids can thrive and learn more than they would be able to at school. It just takes learning how to create the conditions that your unique child needs in order to truly engage with learning and what it means for you to support them along the way. â¤ď¸ If you're looking for similar results or something even better, I invite you to apply for my 1:1 coaching program. Let's work together to overcome your challenges and make homeschooling a sustainable and wonderful experience for your whole family. When homeschooling is a struggle, itâs easy for homeschooling parents to think they are letting their kids down. They blame themselves for the challenges they are experiencing. They worry that their mistakes will ruin their child. They stress that their kids arenât learning enough and will fall behind. Many parents start to think that they arenât the right person to teach their neurodivergent kids. If you have any of these thoughts running around your head, please stop them. Now! You are 100% the BEST person to teach your child!â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ Nobody loves your child more than you or is more invested in their learning, development, and future than you are.â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ Homeschooling neurodivergent kids has to be as unique as they are and no one knows your child or understands them better than you do. The struggle isnât your fault. Itâs really hard to know how to navigate challenges in ways that will support your unique homeschoolerâs learning and development. â¤ď¸ Especially, when your child is resisting assignments and there are tears and meltdowns along the way. These are just signs that you need some support and a different approach to communicating and homeschooling your unique family. Thatâs okay. Iâm here to help. I had all of those same thoughts. I struggled with power struggles and meltdowns instead of collaboration and connection. Then, I took a step back to reflect on what was really going on and develop the Communicate. Plan. Connect Framework. I became a homeschooling coach because I donât want you to struggle for one more day. â¤ď¸ I created my 1:1 coaching program because I want you to enjoy homeschooling your child and I want you to feel confident and in control when it comes to guiding your childâs learning. Letâs chat about what youâre experiencing and how youâd prefer homeschooling to work. Letâs get an action plan in place and see if weâre a good fit to work together. So many parents think that when their neurodivergent homeschoolers resist doing an assignment or activity that itâs a personal challenge. They feel that their kids are challenging their authority or testing the limits to get out of working. They feel the need to impose their authority to make it clear to their homeschoolers who is in charge. It makes sense because it fits with what many therapists say: set a limit and enforce it, no matter how upset the child becomes. Iâm sorry to say, but this doesnât apply to homeschooling. Homeschooling neurodivergent kids requires a different approach than you may be using to parent. Neurodivergent homeschoolers arenât going to be able to learn because they are told to. They canât learn when they feel coerced. They canât learn when they feel anxious or distressed. Seeing your neurodivergent homeschooler engaged in their learning, and excited to share their ideas with you requires a different approach. They need something different than what school can offer. Itâs probably something quite different than what you experienced as a child and as a student.â¤ď¸ Itâs okay if youâre not sure what to do right now. Thereâs little about your life that has prepared you to parent and homeschool this unique child. â¤ď¸ It's my job as your homeschooling coach to give you the support and framework you need to confidently navigate the challenges that come up.â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ Schedule your free consultation call here so we can chat about your unique situation and get an action plan in place that you can start implementing immediately. When homeschooling isnât going well, the parent feels responsible. The homeschooling parent feels stress, pressure, and fear when homeschooling is about resistance, power struggles, and meltdown instead of engaged learning and connection. When I was struggling to homeschool my unique learner, it was difficult to sleep. I would search online for answers and suggestions that could make homeschooling work for us. I was carrying all of the worry and responsibility for my childâs learning and my child wasnât. My kid was perfectly happy not doing math or reading. They didnât have a care in the world. This drove me nuts! I wanted my child to care about their learning and make an effort to do the assignments. I really didnât understand a lot about how to homeschool my unique learner back then. Part of me creating the Communicate. Plan. Connect Framework was clearly defining each of our roles. My child is responsible for their own learning. Period. I am responsible for creating the conditions of their learning, guiding what they are learning, and supporting them in their learning and development. Making your homeschooler responsible for their own learning isnât the same thing as them learning independently while you do other activities in another room. đ And itâs only possible when homeschooling doesnât involve resistance and power struggles. Itâs my job to help you discover how to create the right conditions that support your individual homeschoolerâs learning and developmental needs. I know how hard it can be to figure that out. And I donât want it to take you as many years as it took me. If youâre tired of the conflict, stress, and worry, itâs time to take action. If you already know what the problems are, but you donât know how to fix them, isnât it time to do something about it? I want you to enjoy homeschooling and feel a greater connection to your unique children every day. So, letâs see if my 1:1 coaching program is the right fit for you. Itâs so challenging to figure out what to do when homeschooling is a struggle. Maybe you feel like you canât share how badly itâs going? Maybe you ask fellow homeschooling parents for advice or search FB groups, but what works for their child, doesnât work for yours. There are no quick fixes or open and go curriculum that will transform your homeschooling experience. Youâre going to have to get the answers and support you deserve. Youâre going to need a framework that can guide you through the unique challenges that come with homeschooling a neurodivergent child. Itâs my job to give you a deeper understanding of why homeschooling is this way right now. Itâs my job to help you identify gaps in your homeschooling practice. And, itâs my job to support you in feeling empowered to make changes so that homeschooling works for you and your family. â¤ď¸ Itâs not too late to register for the Empowering Parents to Homeschool their Neurodivergent Kids with Connection, Collaboration, and Academic Success: A Masterclass. I love to share my clientsâ successes so you know whatâs possible for your family. đ I worked with a client who was worn out from daily power struggles with her child. She felt like she had to yell in order to get her homeschooler to do an assignment. She knew it wasnât working, but she didnât know what else to do. Through us working together, we were able to uncover the triggers that she was experiencing from so many years of resistance and power struggles. She felt frustrated, angry, and worried about her childâs learning. By the end of our 8 weeks together, she was using a completely different approach to communicating and had left power struggles in the past. She felt closer to her son and they were enjoying homeschooling activities and assignments that were better suited to his individual needs and development. She felt so much lighter and smiled easily. She was empowered by the CPC method and knew how to approach homeschooling in a way that was sustainable for her and her family. If youâre looking for this kind of homeschooling experience too, youâre invited to the [free] masterclass this Friday. During the masterclass, youâll discover: : â¤ď¸3 common mistakes homeschooling parents make (and how to fix them) â¤ď¸How to identify any gaps in your homeschooling practice â¤ď¸My 3-part framework that you can use to quickly turn homeschooling around. Iâm pretty open about the struggles I faced in the early years of homeschooling. Resistance. Power Struggles. Meltdowns and physical aggression. Thereâs a reason I had to develop the CPC Method in order to keep going. đ Homeschooling transformed for my family once I changed my approach. The other day something pretty cool happened. When my unique learner finished reading a book, I suggested a project that would include what they had learned from reading the book. My homeschooler did not like my project idea. However, instead of resisting and getting upset, they came up with a different project. Instead of doing my idea, my homeschooler wrote an interview with the main character. A waaay better idea than what I had come up with! đ Whenever my child collaborates on what the learning, assignment, or project will be, they are far more eager and invested in completing it. This didnât happen overnight. It took years for me to figure out what it means to homeschool this individual. I don't want it to take years for homeschooling to be what you desire! The first step is attending my [free] masterclass this Friday. If you canât join live, register anyway to get access to the replay and watch at your convenience. â¤ď¸ Weâll talk about: >> Some mistakes that most parents make when homeschooling a neurodivergent child >> What gaps you may have in your homeschooling practice >> The 3-part framework I developed to help you handle whatever challenges come up with confidence. Iâve had moments when it feels like Iâm invisible to my child. It seems like when I speak, no sound reaches their ears. đ¤Śââď¸đ¤Śââď¸ So many homeschooling parents feel like they have to yell to get their homeschoolers to listen and do what they are asking. It certainly doesnât feel good to us or our kids when we yell at them. I donât think any parent chooses to yell at their kids. The yelling comes from a place of desperation, anger, not getting through, and not knowing what else to do. I'm not blaming anyone for yelling, it happens. But no one is eager to learn when theyâre being yelled at to complete assignments. There has to be another way, right? Of course there is! Communication is the first part of my Communicate. Plan. Connect Framework that I know can help you navigate situations so you donât have to yell or get into power struggles with your homeschooler. This month is Autism Awareness Month and a great opportunity to go over some key things to keep in mind when homeschooling an autistic child. â¤ď¸ No two children with autism are the same. â¤ď¸ What works for one homeschooling family wonât automatically work for yours. â¤ď¸ Autistic children have a lot of anxiety and that affects their learning. â¤ď¸ Your autistic homeschooler is a unique, intellectual, creative child who is exactly who they are supposed to be at this moment. â¤ď¸ Learning has to hold connection, purpose, and meaning for autistic homeschoolers. â¤ď¸ Autistic kids need a very different form of communication from the adults in their lives. If resistance, conflict, or power struggles are a part of your homeschooling experience, you may be having trouble figuring out what the list means for homeschooling your individual child. Donât worry! You can figure it out. You just need the right support. â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ The first step is registering for my [free] masterclass this Friday at 11am Eastern. Many parents struggle to homeschool their neurodivergent kids. They donât seek out help and expert guidance from a coach. They donât think their needs are as important as those of their neurodivergent homeschoolers. They donât believe they should enjoy homeschooling every day. My job is to support homeschooling parents as they close gaps in their homeschooling practice and transform homeschooling into something that works for the whole family. â¤ď¸ I coach homeschooling parents in how to communicate, plan, and connect with their unique children so both parent and homeschooler can thrive and kids can truly engage with their learning. They gain confidence in understanding what it means to homeschool their unique children and want to enjoy homeschooling, too. â¤ď¸ I love seeing the change that comes over homeschooling parents when they realize how they can cover topics of interest to them.â¤ď¸ Recently, one client started beaming as she remembered fun activities that did in a social studies class decades earlier⌠and she realized she could recreate those hands-on activities that bring history to life for her own kids.â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ She discovered that homeschooling could be fun and interesting. She saw how using her passions and interests to plan learning time, inspired her neurodivergent kids to be interested in the topic, too. From working together, she became empowered to add her ideas and creativity to homeschooling. Instead of feeling stuck in an endless power struggle, she saw that homeschooling could be calmer and enjoyable. đĽłđĽłđĽł If you're looking for similar results or something even better, I invite you to apply for my 1:1 coaching program. Too many homeschooling parents believe itâs their responsibility to oversee and modify their neurodivergent childrenâs behavior. They see their unique homeschoolersâ learning habits and behavior and worry that they wonât be able to function later on in life at a school or workplace. A lot of parents ask their kids to sit still while theyâre doing an assignment or reading. Words like resilience, grit, perseverance guide many parentsâ need to âcorrectâ their kidsâ behavior. The truth is totally different: Who your child is now and how they behave when they learn is exactly right for who they are at this exact moment and where they are at in their development. I promise you, who your child is right now is NOT who they are going to be in a few years. There is so much development that takes place during childhood. And we know that our homeschoolers are on their own, unique developmental journeys. â¤ď¸ Focusing on your childâs behavior can actually cause distress and get in the way of their learning. But it just means that you probably arenât sure how to respond when there's resistance or what changes to make to your homeschooling practice to better support their learning and development. Thatâs okay. Thatâs why Iâm here. â¤ď¸ Itâs my job to help you identify any gaps in your homeschooling practice and to empower you to confidently make adjustments so your unique learner can engage with their learning. â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ Apply for a free consultation call and let's see if you're a good fit for one of my coaching programs. A lot of homeschooling parents feel like they have to supervise and change their unique kidsâ behavior. Usually, parents do this by offering rewards or imposing limits/negative consequences. Parents are encouraged to hold their ground and enforce those limits with their neurodivergent kids, no matter what. Because we are told to do this by so many professionals, weâre taken by surprise when it leads to explosions. We canât understand why our kids explode and go into crisis instead of doing a few math problems or putting their clothes away. The positive and negative consequences approach is based on training our kids, not understanding what they are experiencing and helping them remove the obstacles blocking them from doing what weâre asking. Thatâs why itâs not the path to dealing with your homeschoolerâs resistance. I developed the Communicate. Plan. Connect Framework to show parents a different way of responding to their childâs resistance that fosters collaboration and connection instead of power struggles and meltdowns. Are you ready to try a different approach to communicating with your unique homeschooler? Would you like to see your child engaged in learning and celebrating their academic wins with you? Send me a DM or schedule a consultation call [link in bio and comments]. Let's create an action plan, so you can have the homeschooling experience you expected when you first decided to homeschool. â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #neurodivergentparenting #neurodivergenthomeschooling #adhdhomeschooling #homeschoolingmoms #homeschoolingmommy #homeschoolingmomlife #homeschoolingfamily #homeschoolmom #homeschoolingspecialneeds #homeschoolingonthespectrum #homeschoolingadhd #homeschoolcommunity #specialneedsparenting #homeschoolmama #homeeducators #homeschoolinglookslikethis #teachingathome #learningathome #homecenteredlearning #spdhomeschool #autismhomeschool #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryintegration #asdhomeschooling #anxiouskids #anxiouskidsanxiousparents #homeschoolingwithanxiety #homeschoolingwithadhd
When homeschooling is a struggle, parents can develop their own triggers. For me, that was science experiments. In the beginning, the experiments we tried didnât give us the same results as shown on the video or blog. I couldnât explain what was happening, so we werenât learning from our âfailuresâ. I started to get anxious about doing science experiments. I felt like I couldnât teach my child what they needed to know because I knew so little about the subject. This was at the same time that homeschooling became more about my childâs resistance and power struggles than learning. I was feeling like I was failing my homeschooler and that it had been the wrong choice. I was also in the process of taking a step back and reflecting on the challenges. Part of my growth as a homeschooling parent was redefining what exactly I was responsible for. Did I have to know everything, be able to explain everything? Was I responsible for every activity and experiment going according to plan? Was I responsible for my unique childâs learning? Of course not. Neither are you. As homeschooling parents, we are guides. We are facilitators of learning. We set up the conditions for our unique kids to learn and support them along the way. We arenât the keeper of knowledge or the authorities on how things should be done. Once I became clear on what my responsibilities actually are, I felt less pressure and could begin to focus on what was causing my childâs resistance and what kind of learning experiences they needed. I coach parents in how to clarify their role as homeschooling parents. We focus on what the parent desires homeschooling to be like, and how to make that desire reality, so they can homeschool with collaboration and connection instead of power struggles and meltdowns. If this sounds like the kind of support youâre looking for, schedule a free consultation call and see if youâre a good fit for my 1:1 coaching program. I love to share my clientsâ successes so you know whatâs possible for your family. đ I worked with a mom who was thrown into homeschooling when the pandemic hit. All of a sudden her schedule was thrown into chaos, and she found herself homeschooling without any plan. By the time we had our first call, she was in tears and hating the experience. We talked about what she wanted homeschooling her kids to look like - how she wanted to feel and what she wanted the day to be like. Working together, we created a plan that helped her have the experience she had imagined. We put the fun back into learning at home. She let go of her anxiety, stress, and fear because she had a clear idea of how to plan activities that she actually wanted to do with her kids. I firmly believe that in order for homeschooling to be an awesome experience for a child, it has to be a great experience for the parent too. You have to have your needs met and you have to enjoy the learning process. Iâm all about setting you up for success so you can set your unique homeschooler up for success. đ If youâre looking for this kind of homeschooling support too, youâre invited to my upcoming masterclass. During the masterclass, youâll discover: : â¤ď¸ 3 common mistakes homeschooling parents make (and how to fix them) â¤ď¸ How to identify any gaps in your homeschooling practice â¤ď¸ My 3-part framework that you can use to quickly turn homeschooling around. I had a really hard time with homeschooling in the beginning. I thought my curious and creative child would be fun to homeschool. I never expected the resistance. I didnât know how to prevent meltdowns. I wasnât proud of the power struggles. I had to develop a different approach to homeschooling my unique child that continues to help my clients homeschool their neurodivergent children with connection and collaboration instead of resistance and power struggles. So what does homeschooling look like at my home? I could tell you that weâre dressed and ready to start every morning at 9am, but Iâd be lying. Thereâs a relaxed feel to learning because the actual learning that my child is engaged with is mostly above grade level. Iâve let go of old ideas of what learning looks like and where and how it has to take place. Sometimes we do work at the library or a cafe. Sometimes, I lay out a project related to a novel and my kid will reject my idea and come up with a far more complicated one. đ I donât stress over homeschooling anymore because I see how engaged and productive my unique learner has become as the result of my CPC method. Iâm explaining the Communicate. Plan. Connect Framework at the masterclass this Friday. Iâve had a few calls recently where homeschooling moms raised the same question. They were all concerned that if they changed their approach to homeschooling and met their neurodivergent childrenâs learning needs, connected with their childrenâs interests, and focused on creating a learning experience for their individual children, that their kids would become spoiled and entitled. They asked how their kids would be able to hold a job and ever respect authority if homeschooling was custom-tailored to their individual needs. I think it comes down to learning and whether or not our unique homeschoolers are going to be allowed to learn to their potential. If strict rules and worksheets are causing resistance instead of engagement, itâs hard to feel like your child is really learning (or learning enough) at home. When our kids are invested in their learning assignments and activities, they are eager to participate and learn new topics and skills. Our role is to foster their development in a safe and supportive environment. Who our kids are at this age is not who they are going to be when they turn 18 or 25. When parents come to me with this type of concern, I ask if they are open to considering a different approach to homeschooling, one that enables them to discover what is best practice for their kids. Iâm sharing my Communicate. Plan. Connect Framework at this Fridayâs masterclass. Join us live or register to access the replay at your convenience. [Register at link in bio and comments] This is the framework that helped me stop feeling like a failure at homeschooling. Iâd like you to think back to the last good day you had with your family. There werenât any tears. No power struggles. No conflicts. Or almost none. đ Do you remember what you did that day? Want to know why it went so well? Because your childâs needs were being met. And, hopefully, so were yours. Homeschooling isnât any different. I know you can feel pressure for your unique learner to complete assignments and not fall behind. But homeschooling is all about meeting individual needs. When your homeschoolerâs needs are being met â physical, emotional, developmental, intellectual needs â it all falls into place. Homeschooling goes from being a struggle that causes you worry, stress, and fear to a fun experience full of connection. Itâs my mission to help you get there. And make sure you feel confident and empowered to guide your childâs learning for years to come. The first step is registering for my [free] masterclass this Friday at 11am Eastern. We are doing something new next year, and we are all very excited! With my oldest graduating this year and my youngest going into seventh grade, we are feeling the need to invest in something different. So, next year we will all be joining @classical_conversations for our community. We have homeschooled classically from the beginning, but have largely done it on our own or with a community that did not hold to the classical model, which has had its difficulties. Now, my daughter and son will be joining the Challenge program, and I will be directing a Challenge level. Honestly, we canât wait! Itâs going to be a really fun change. #classicalhomeschool #classicalconversations #challengeb #homeschooling #homeschoolingadhd #homeschoolingdyslexia
I love to share my clientsâ successes so you can see whatâs possible for you and your family.â¤ď¸ Itâs a challenge to homeschool and parent without power struggles, getting frustrated and angry, and sometimes yelling. We arenât robots and, just like our kids, sometimes we have bad days. When I first spoke with Diane, she was locked in power struggles with her unique homeschooler. She felt like he would only pick up a pencil if she yelled first. She felt defeated and thought that she was failing at homeschooling. From our time working together, she realized that she couldnât just expect her son to do what she wanted. She had to help him develop the skills he needed in order to meet her expectations. She became confident that she could prevent power struggles by using a different way of communicating. She became empowered to modify or replace assignments when they didnât meet her sonâs learning needs. The best part is that Diane discovered that she and her son shared a love for baking and could connect over baking cupcakes or making pizza for dinner. Iâd love to give you an approach to communicating and planning that will strengthen your connection to your neurodivergent homeschooler. Maybe my 1:1 coaching program is the best fit for you? Or maybe youâd prefer group coaching where we meet weekly, you have your questions and concerns addressed, but itâs slower paced and a more affordable price? If youâre ready to homeschool without all of the struggle and obstacles, what matters most is that you take action and get the support thatâs right for you. I wanted to share something with you that I believe could make a huge difference with homeschooling and parenting. Iâve spoken with a few homeschooling moms this week who feel like theyâre failing their unique kids. They all said the same things: >> They donât see their homeschoolers engaged in learning >> They donât know how to get their kids to complete assignments >> They are tired of fighting with their kids over school work >> They are worried their kids are falling behind Each conversation took me back to my early years homeschooling, when I felt so many of the things. But, I didnât have anyone to talk to about it. Honestly, I became a homeschooling coach because I donât want any other homeschooling parent to go through the struggles I went through and have to sink or swim on their own. I want to support you through the struggles and challenges, so you get to the other side faster and smoother than I did. I want to take away the stress and worry and give you peace of mind that you will be able to confidently homeschool your unique family for years to come. That's why I'm excited to invite you to The MLC Group Coaching Program. Over the course of months, weâll meet weekly to support you in overcoming whatever challenges youâre facing using my Communicate. Plan. Connect Framework. Moving at a slower pace, with lots of room for you to share questions and concerns, youâll be able to learn from other parentsâ experiences as you take steps to make homeschooling what youâd hoped it would be. If you've decided that you canât continue to homeschool with these struggles another week, why not get the support you need at a pace and price that works for you? The MLC Group Coaching Program is open for enrollment now. I know how scary it can be to try something new, but I don't want you to feel stuck or trapped with homeschooling any longer. I never planned to homeschool. However, I learned pretty quickly that the program wasnât developmentally appropriate for my unique child. and we didnât have another viable option where we lived. I felt that homeschooling was the only way to create a safe and supportive environment where my child could develop a love of learning. I didnât expect it to be so challenging. I didnât understand why my child was saying ânoâ to activities that I thought would be fun. I didnât expect the meltdowns and physical aggression. I was very unhappy homeschooling and I blamed myself for it not going well. I thought that I wasnât the right person to teach my child. I felt that they werenât learning enough and I was ruining their chance to excel in college and beyond. I felt so much pressure, stress, and worry. I reached my breaking point and decided that I didnât want to struggle with homeschooling anymore. I thought carefully about what I knew of how kids learn, child development, child psychology, curriculum, and everything I knew about my individual child. I started trying different things and really studying what worked, what didnât, and why. Over time I developed the Communicate. Plan. Connect Framework that helps parents just like you become empowered to guide homeschooling and navigate challenges that arise for years to come. I know that not everyone is in a position to afford or dedicate time to 1:1 coaching with me. But, I also know that every parent should have access to support when they need it. So, Iâve started a group coaching program. By meeting weekly, and going through the CPC framework at a slower pace, youâll have access to coaching, guidance, knowledge, and community to support you as you begin to change your approach to homeschooling. â¤ď¸ Youâll be able to see your child engage with their learning and youâll start to feel more connected to them without power struggles and resistance derailing learning. â¤ď¸ I know how much you desire to make homeschooling work for you and your family. And I promise you, you will be able to. â¤ď¸ Schedule a call and find out if the group program is right for you [link in bio and comments] #neurodiverse
Itâs hard to believe spring is here! đ¸đ¸đ¸And the end of the school year is only a few months away. How would you like to feel when the school year ends? How would you like to feel about your unique homeschoolerâs progress this year? Would you like to look back and feel great about the progress they made and the incredible projects they created? When I was struggling with homeschooling, I dreaded the end of the year because it meant that I had run out of time to fix things. But I now know that wasnât true. đItâs never too late to learn new approaches to homeschooling and to offer your child meaningful, engaging, high level learning. đItâs never too late to strengthen your connection to your child and start enjoying homeschooling. Now is the perfect time to decide that you want to be supported in figuring out ways to create learning experiences that meet your childâs learning and developmental needs. đ The MLC Group Coaching Program is a way for you to get coaching with me without feeling overwhelmed at an accessible price. đ We meet weekly, and you can watch the replays if youâre unable to make it one week. I love to share my clientsâ successes so you know whatâs possible for your family. đ I worked with a mom who had hit a wall with homeschooling. The kids were triggering one another whenever there was resistance. She had totally lost control and couldnât see a way to make things better. By the time we had our first call, she wasnât sure anything could be done to improve the situation. We talked about what had caused homeschooling to change, what was happening with each child as an individual and what dynamic had developed during learning time. We created an action plan to change the dynamic. More importantly, we developed steps for her to take so she felt empowered to implement the changes. Working together, we restored her confidence in her ability to guide her familyâs learning and homeschooling experience â even with children with different needs. Parenting a unique child involves so many challenges that it can be easy to focus on what your child needs and forget about yourself. Maybe you stay up late looking for a better curriculum or advice for how to improve homeschooling. Maybe you forget to drink water or eat enough during the day because youâre so focused on what others need. That was certainly the case for me. I remember losing so much sleep, worrying about my childâs reading and whether or not homeschooling had been the right choice for our family. This is a friendly reminder that you are a part of homeschooling. That you get to have your needs met. And you get to do topics and activities that interest you. Homeschooling is an enormous commitment and you should experience a stronger connection to your child through sharing ideas, laughing, and having fun. If this isnât the homeschooling experience youâre having right now, maybe itâs time to do something about it? Register for my upcoming masterclass this Friday. By registering you can join live and get your questions answered, or you can access the replay and watch at your convenience. Weâll talk about some mistakes that most parents make when homeschooling a neurodivergent child, what gaps you may have in your homeschooling practice, and the 3-part framework I developed to help you handle whatever challenges come up with confidence. When I started homeschooling, I ran into some major resistance with reading. My unique child had no interest in learning how to read. They werenât interested in letter sounds or even looking at the page when I was reading to them. Of course, everytime a family member called, they would ask if my child was reading yet. My child became older than the age that kids start reading in school and I felt the pressure. I became stressed and anxious. I started to think that I was failing my child and that I wasnât able to teach them. I couldnât take the pressure and my child began resisting reading even more aggressively than before. I reached a point where I had to stop and think. It wasnât working and I needed to come up with a new way for us to homeschool. I used everything I knew from my 20+ years as an educator and curriculum writer about learning, child development, and psychology. It took time, but I developed an approach to homeschooling that centers connection, collaboration, and high level meaningful learning experiences instead of power struggles and meltdowns. Iâm sharing the framework I developed to help homeschooling parents take steps to improve their homeschooling experience. Join me for the Empowering Parents to Homeschool their Neurodivergent Kids with Connection, Collaboration, and Academic Success: A Masterclass this Friday. I know from personal experience how awful it feels when homeschooling is challenging. You plan activities and assignments that your homeschooler refuses to do. Instead of having fun and feeling connected to your child, you're dealing with their resistance, meltdowns, and tears. Itâs exhausting and causes stress, worry, and fear. Hereâs the truth: Your childâs resistance isnât the problem. They are at the exact point in their development that they are meant to be. Your child is an amazing, curious, intellectual who wants to learn and make you happy (even though it may not seem like it). The homeschooling struggles youâre experiencing are caused by a disconnect. Thereâs a gap somewhere between what youâre asking your child to do and what they are able to do. Makes sense, but what are you supposed to do about it? Donât worry if you donât know yet. Thereâs not much about our lives that has prepared us to homeschool our unique kids. In order to help you gain clarity about the challenges youâre facing and what you can do to overcome them, Iâm holding a masterclass this Friday at 11am Eastern Time. During the masterclass, weâll: â¤ď¸ Cover 3 common mistakes parents make when homeschooling neurodivergent kids â¤ď¸ Identify any gaps in your homeschooling practice â¤ď¸ Discover a simple 3-part framework that you can apply to your homeschooling so there is greater engagement with learning and connection Register for the free masterclass at the link in the bio and comments or send me a DM. The MLC Group Coaching Program is an incredible opportunity that's about to close its doors, but I don't want you to miss out. Together, we'll identify gaps in your homeschooling practice and look at what tweaks can be made in order to turn homeschooling into what you desire it to be. Plus, youâll benefit from the support and experiences of other homeschooling parents dealing with their own struggles. But don't just take my word for it. Ellen had this to say about our work together: âAfsaneh has been an outstanding thought partner, coach, and advisor. She has helped me to develop an approach to homeschooling that is very well-suited to my childrensâ interests, personalities, strengths and challenges, as well as my own. She was willing to meet me where I was in the process, and quickly helped me to identify where I was stuck. She knew when to listen, when to ask powerful questions, when to challenge me and when to share your considerable knowledge of pedagogy, curriculum design, and child development in order to help me move forward. Overall, I feel proud of the work we did together and thankful that I now have her as a resource and coach whenever I need homeschooling support." So, is The MLC Group Coaching Program right for you? I want you to take a moment and think back to why you started homeschooling. Was it to give your child a better learning experience than they could have at a traditional school? Was it because you wanted a stronger connection to your child for the precious years of childhood? I know you've had some good homeschooling days, but it isnât quite what youâd hoped it would be. Youâre trying so hard, but your child just isnât learning and responding how you expected. It's time to change that. I want to introduce you to the MLC Group Coaching Program. That's where The MLC Group Coaching Program comes in. We'll work together in a supportive small group where weâll talk about the challenges youâre facing and what to do about them. Weâll slowly go through the ins and outs of the Communicate. Connect. Plan. Connect Framework and what it means to implement it with your unique family. I love to share my clientsâ successes so you know whatâs possible for your family. đ I worked with a client who was frustrated with how homeschooling was going. She didnât feel a strong connection to her kids. She felt like she was spending more time telling her kids to get off devices and do school work than actually homeschooling. Homeschooling wasnât how sheâd hoped it would be. She felt out of control. The kids were doing whatever she wanted and, no matter how much she yelled or gave consequences, nothing was changing. From working together, we were able to put structures in place that favored connection over screen time. We discovered what meaningful, learning meant for her kids and how to streamline planning to make it easier for her. By the end of the coaching program, homeschooling was transformed. Her kids were excited to do the learning activities she had planned and there were limits set on screen time. She was enjoying spending time with her kids. She felt empowered by the CPC method and knew how to handle challenges and resistance when they came up. If youâre looking for this kind of homeschooling support too, youâre invited to my upcoming masterclass. Parents decide to homeschool because itâs the best option for their unique kids. Many parents donât think about what it will mean for them, they just want to do whatâs best for their kids. Raising a neurodivergent child requires meeting unique needs and itâs easy to put yourself last. It isnât until homeschooling becomes a struggle that many parents realize they arenât happy and arenât enjoying homeschooling. They feel stressed, anxious, and scared. They feel like they are failing or that they are going to ruin their kids. None of this is true, of course. And homeschooling has to work for you. You are guiding your childâs learning for years to come. Your peace of mind and well-being are fundamental to creating a supportive and developmentally appropriate learning environment for your kids. How do you find peace of mind? By getting support and a clear action plan to deal with the challenges youâre facing. When I started homeschooling, I created a schedule, chose learning activities, and set up a learning space. I expected my unique child to come to the table and do the activities that I had planned. I never expected my child to say no and loudly resist doing activities. I was caught unprepared and didnât know how to respond. I would tell them how smart and capable they were and that I knew they could do it. When encouragement and motivation didnât work, I would become frustrated and impatient. I would threaten to take away screen time or something else they wanted. Maybe the threat would get my child to do a few math problems or write a couple of words. But, usually the negative consequence would cause my child to explode. Tears, meltdowns, explosions. Homeschooling went from the unexpected to a struggle to a miserable experience for both me and my child. I felt like I was failing at homeschooling and I felt very disconnected from my kid. I reached a point where I couldnât keep doing the same thing anymore. I had to stop and reflect on everything I knew about child development, child psychology, and learning from my 20+ years as an educator. I developed an approach to homeschooling that centers connection, collaboration, and high level meaningful learning experiences instead of power struggles and meltdowns. Homeschooling can be isolating, especially when it feels like a struggle. When homeschooling was at its lowest point, I didnât feel like there was anyone I could talk to about it. My husband wasnât there to understand. My friends and family would just tell me to send my child back to school. I didnât have anyone in my life who could understand what I was going through. The other homeschooling parents seemed to have everything under control, which only made me feel like more of a failure. It was extra difficult to ask for help because I didnât want to tell anyone how physically aggressive my child would become. Their resistance would take the form of kicking, throwing, and turning over chairs. I felt like I had to protect my familyâs privacy and figure out how to improve homeschooling on my own. I was able to use my 20-year background in education, child development, and child psychology to change my approach to homeschooling. However, it took a few years. I donât want that for you or any other homeschooling parent. We decide to homeschool because we want to enjoy our kids while theyâre young and strengthen the connection we have with them. You didnât start homeschooling to feel stressed, worried, and alone in your struggles. And you arenât alone. My clients are all going through similar things and need support to make the right changes for their unique family. â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ I donât want you to wait another day to get a plan together. We had a wonderful private tour at Fort Monroe in Virginia - completely by accident, but more amazing than we could have imagined! Her ancestor was at this fort when it was active and has a battery named after him. She explained what a squinch is and why itâs important. She also showed us the deodar cedar on the property and explained its significance. Those that believe in Gods believe that the God of Love and Peace lives in this tree. We also learned about the Lincoln Gun and that it weighed over 49,000 pounds! So much history is learned from visiting places instead of seeing it in a book. Many parents struggle to homeschool their neurodivergent kids. They try to fix it on their own. They donât seek out help and expert guidance from a coach. They are in a constant state of uncertainty: >>Why are there tears every day? >>Why does my child keep resisting doing assignments? >>I know my child doesnât like that kind of assignment, but what else am I supposed to do? >>Why doesnât it work when I take away something my kid loves? Why do they explode instead of completing the assignment? Why? Without understanding whatâs causing the resistance and difficult behavior, there are power struggles, and parents are stressed and worried that their kids are learning enough. Without answers and an action plan, parents spend more money on curriculum, hoping that the next one will click for their neurodivergent kids. My job is to offer homeschooling parents a way to have a completely different experience. I coach homeschooling parents in how to communicate, plan, and connect with their unique children so thereâs no mystery when it comes to behavior or learning. I empower parents to create a homeschooling experience where the whole family can thrive and unique kids can learn to their full potential. â¤ď¸ I'm excited to let you know that I currently have some spaces available for my 1:1 coaching program. I worked with a client who was stressed and worn out from spending her energy trying to get her son to do a few minutes of school work each day. When we had our first call, she was emotional and looked so unhappy. She started to tell me what she was experiencing, so that we could figure out what changes she could make. It became clear that one of the first things that had to change was how she saw her role as the homeschooling parent. Once she understood that her needs, interests, and passions had to be a part of the homeschooling day, she transformed how she felt about homeschooling and was open to changing her approach to planning learning time. From working together, she became empowered to add her ideas and creativity to homeschooling. Instead of feeling stuck in an endless power struggle, she saw that homeschooling could be fun for her and her kids. After our 8 weeks together, she was a changed person. She was smiling, joking, and enjoying being her kidsâ learning partner. It was like speaking to a different person and I was so happy for her! If you're looking for similar results or something even better, I invite you to apply for my 1:1 coaching program. Let's work together to overcome your challenges and make homeschooling a sustainable and great experience for your whole family. Apply for coaching and let's get started on this journey together. Too many homeschooling parents react to resistance and negative behavior with explanations of other ways of expressing big emotions. Hereâs why this idea is so limiting: Behavior is only a symptom. By responding or reacting to the behavior alone, homeschooling parents never have a chance to find out what is causing the behavior and what changes they can make to help neurodivergent homeschoolers feel less anxious and more confident about learning time. Instead of removing the causes of the behavior, homeschooling parents find themselves locked in power struggles with their kids. Viewing your unique homeschoolerâs behavior as a form of communication is the first step in identifying gaps in your homeschooling practice. Once you identify the gaps in your homeschooling practice and take steps to remove them, your homeschoolerâs behavior will transform. Youâll get to experience a homeschooler eager to learn and share with you. Youâll get to see them feel confident about their learning and more connected to you. â¤ď¸ Itâs time for you and your child to have a better homeschooling experience. â¤ď¸ If you're interested, I have a few spaces open for my 1:1 coaching program. Don't hesitate to send me a DM or fill out the application to see if we're a good fit. I made so many mistakes when I first started homeschooling. But, there was one mistake I made that caused a lot of tension, conflict, and upset during learning time. I thought my unique child had to have the same skills that I had at that age and that kids at school had. Expectations from grandparents and others didnât help either. It felt like additional pressure for me to get my child to do the things they werenât doing. This was especially true for reading. I felt a lot of stress and pressure every time someone asked if my child was reading yet. This was making my homeschooler feel frustrated and bad about reading. It took me longer than I wish it had to realize how harmful this idea was for my unique child. Homeschooling sets our unique kids on their own learning journey. Thereâs nothing one-size-fits-all about it. Everything we ask our kids to do has to be developmentally appropriate and right for them. It took me a while to understand this. My role was to guide, facilitate, support. I couldnât rush my childâs development and expecting them to do more than they were able caused them to feel they were doing something wrong and disappointing me. I had to make some changes fast. If learning to read created stress for my child, they werenât going to want to read. I had to turn my expectations into goals and I had to figure out what support my child needed from me in order for them to meet those goals. And I had to really understand that my childâs development wasnât on anyone elseâs timeline. Are you ready to discover ways of planning and supporting your unique childâs learning to meet the expectations and goals you have for them? Send me a DM or schedule a free consultation and let's create a personalized homeschooling plan for you and your child. Is your homeschooler refusing to do assignments? Do you feel like you have to yell or threaten to take something away in order for your child to get some work done? I know from my own experience how draining it can be when there are power struggles, meltdowns, and physical aggression. For me, it felt like homeschooling would go so well if my child behaved differently. I focused on working to change how my homeschooler reacted. But I realized their behavior was only a symptom of a larger problem, not the cause. Behavior and resistance is a form of communication. Our unique kids respond and react to the circumstances they perceive. And they are experiencing the world and processing information in their own, unique way. The authority and power we have as parents to take things away or offer rewards, doesnât change what our unique homeschoolers are experiencing. If a neurodivergent homeschooler, for any reason, canât do an assignment in the way they are asked to do it, then they canât do the assignment. They canât. What we do as homeschooling parents at that moment makes all of the difference in what our kidsâ behavior will be. You may feel that their refusal to do the assignment is your trigger. Your child will be triggered by how you respond. I know because Iâve been on both sides of this dynamic as a child and as a parent countless times. However, this is only one of many possible dynamics you can have with your unique homeschooler. It all comes down to communication, what learning activities you are asking of your child, and how connected you both feel to one another. â¤ď¸ I coach parents through these key aspects of homeschooling. I empower parents to confidently create awesome high level learning experiences that are right for their kids at every stage of their development. I show homeschooling parents how to use communication to foster learning, connection, and collaboration, instead of power struggles and meltdowns. If this sounds like the kind of support youâre looking for, schedule a free consultation call and see if youâre a good fit for my 1:1 coaching program. I love to share my clientsâ successes so you know whatâs possible for your family. đ I worked with a client who was worn out from daily power struggles with her child. She didnât want to yell, but felt like it was the only way to get her child to listen. They got into a dynamic of having a conflict before any work would get done. She knew it wasnât working, but she didnât know what else to do. She felt backed into a corner and her son was also backed into a corner. Neither felt like they could back down, but my client knew there had to be a better way to communicate and manage homeschooling. Through us working together, we were able to uncover the triggers that she was experiencing from so many years of resistance and power struggles. She felt frustrated, angry, and worried about her childâs education. By the end of our 8 weeks together, she was using a completely different approach to communicating and had left power struggles in the past. Not only was her relationship with her son transformed, she also learned a different way to approach planning learning experiences. The kids started having fun during learning time. And, she was surprised to realize that she had started having fun too. She felt so much lighter and smiled easily. She was empowered by the CPC method and knew how to approach homeschooling in a way that was sustainable for her and her family. What does homeschooling look like at your house? Hereâs a glimpse of whatâs going on at my home. We have a flexible approach to learning. Because Iâm clear on what the learning is for the day, it can happen in so many different ways and places. Sometimes, we may not get out of pjs and homeschooling may start closer to 10am than 9am. Other days weâre learning at a museum, or weâre at a cafe doing some work. I include as many hands-on experiences as possible â whether thatâs at home or participating in a workshop, or even asking a family member to show my child a specific skill or share specific knowledge. For example, Iâm a city kid and know nothing about gardening, but my mother-in-law loves to garden and shares stories with my child about gardening with her grandmother when she was young. While we never stray too far from the unit plan and the learning goals Iâve established, thereâs room for my child to add in what theyâd like to learn. We check in with each other about how weâre feeling and what our needs are. The connection and collaboration is there and so is the respect we have for one another, even when my child is being rude or cranky. I feel great about homeschooling because I see how much my unique child is learning and how engaged they are with their learning. If this sounds like the homeschooling experience youâd like to have, itâs time to take action. Register for my upcoming masterclass and learn whatâs missing from your homeschooling and what you can do about it. I was committed to homeschooling and didnât have a plan B. So, I was completely thrown when my child resisted doing school work every day and homeschooling turned into dealing with tears (sometimes mine), meltdowns, and physical aggression. I reached a point where I couldnât keep doing the same thing with the same outcome every day. I had to start reflecting and thinking to identify what wasnât working and why. . I had to use everything I knew about teaching, child development, and child psychology, along with everything I knew about my child as an individual. Once I was able to let go of the pressure I was putting on myself to meet everyoneâs expectations of what my child should be able to do, I could focus on what the next step was for my childâs learning. Once I figured out how to create learning experiences I knew my child would be excited about, homeschooling turned around very quickly. Iâm sharing the framework I developed to help homeschooling parents go from power struggles and meltdowns to connection and collaboration at a live masterclass. I believe that each neurodivergent child is wired in different ways that make them interesting, creative, unique people who want to learn and feel valued and respected for who they are as individuals. Children learn when they feel safe, supported, and when they are asked to do learning activities that they are able to do and find meaningful. Homeschooling is an amazing choice because you can educate your kids in the way they learn best without placing limits or restrictions on their learning. Our kids can learn so much more from homeschooling than they could at school. I also believe that most of our life journey doesnât equip us with the skills and knowledge to be able to meet the needs of our unique children. I think it is unfair to ask (mostly) moms to take over educating their neurodivergent children, in addition to the other domestic responsibilities they have, without giving them the support and knowledge they need to do so successfully. My mission is to fill in the gaps that homeschooling parents have in how they approach communicating with their homeschoolers and how they plan their childrenâs homeschooling experience. Just as I know that every problem has a solution, each parent-child relationship can improve, and every child can learn. Once the parent and child both have their needs met, homeschooling can become everything youâve dreamed it can be. I know this can seem like an impossible dream. I canât recommend homeschooling enough for parents of kids with ADHD. There are so many struggles that kids have with public school standards. Even kids without ADHD. Add in the need for constant movement, difficulties following directions, impulsivity, struggles focusing, and of course they will be labeled the troubled kid in class. Homeschooling is the perfect way to cater your childâs education to exactly meet their needs, without making them feel like a failure. Instead you can harness their hyper focus and show them that they are brilliant and can thrive with their interests. The documentary âThe Disruptorsâ helped me better understand kids with ADHD. Have you thought about what will continue to happen without a homeschooling coach? The power struggles will continue and intensify as your homeschooler gets older. Youâll continue feeling more and more distant from your child, not knowing whatâs going on in their world and how theyâre feeling about it. Youâll keep worrying about their future and whether or not they are learning enough to be able to one day graduate high school and have options after that. This is the only time you get to spend with your child at this age. Homeschooling is an amazing opportunity to get to really know your child as an individual and develop a strong connection around common interests, ideas, and shared experiences. However, this isnât automatic and it takes learning what this means for your unique family. My job as your homeschooling coach is to help you understand how to teach your unique child â how to communicate and plan learning experiences so you can have the connection you desire and while also meeting your needs and your childâs needs. I'm thrilled to let you know that Iâve opened up more spaces for my 1:1 coaching program. If you're interested in seeing if we're a good fit to work together, I encourage you to apply today. Sometimes itâs easy to forget that his mind is going a thousand miles a minute. Other days he gets the sweetest dazed smile and I stop him and ask âWhat was that happy thought? â The other day the thoughts were coming to fast. Add in his brothersâ own tapping and other sensory issues and this one had had it. He covered his ears and began to cry. One simple fix helped us finish our lesson. Classical Piano. I popped headphones on his head and hit play and suddenly his thoughts slowed and became his own again. He finished his work beautifully and in record time. He still needed stimulation, but it needed to be on his terms. This is what ADHD looks like. I worked with a mom who had hit a wall with homeschooling. The kids were triggering one another as a form of resistance and she was putting out one fire after another. She had totally lost control and couldnât see a way to make things better. By the time we had our first call, she wasnât sure anything could be done to improve the situation. We talked about what had caused homeschooling to change, what was happening with each child individually, and what dynamics had developed during learning time. We created an action plan to change those dynamics. More importantly, we developed steps for her to take so she felt empowered to implement the changes. Working together, we restored her confidence in her ability to guide her familyâs learning and homeschooling experience â even with children with different needs. It can feel like an uphill battle that you are losing when homeschooling more than one neurodivergent child. A lot of what you know about schooling and parenting gets challenged when you have a neurodivergent child. Because of this, so many homeschooling parents think that it has to be a struggle to homeschool their unique child. Youâre so used to meltdowns that, while exhausting, you kind of expect them to happen during learning time. Homeschooling neurodivergent kids doesnât have to include meltdowns, explosions, physical aggression, or power struggles. I know that can seem difficult to believe when youâre in the thick of it, but I promise you homeschooling can be a completely different experience for you and your family. Changing your approach to communication, planning, and connection makes all of the difference.
