I have loved so many of Sally's books, but when I first tried reading, Awaking Wonder, I had to put it down. I was in the midst of a difficult time with four very young children, and three older ones. Our homeschool did not resemble the idyllic image she painted in the first few pages of that book. Since then, I've decided to read it again with fresh eyes. While exploring the property we found an entire tray worth of owl pellets, bones, eggshell pieces, and assorted colorful feathers and tufts of fur, in addition to barred rock feathers from the owl responsible for all the mayhem. I'll start this review by stating: This math curriculum saved us this year. As with any curriculum, there are pros and cons. This curriculum will work for some children and not work for others. This is our experience with Math Lessons For a Living Education by Masterbooks. Quick backstory- my daughter has a love/hate relationship with math. There are times she says math is her favorite and other times she's so completely overwhelmed by it that she freezes and can't continue a lesson. We've tried many math curriculum because of this and finally landed on MLFLE. Some things to consider with MLFLE: - It is extremely gentle This is the main reason we tried it. The lessons are short and are laid out in such a way that the pages are not overwhelming and panic inducing. This has completely helped with L's freeze response. This may be a con for some children. Some may think its boring or not challenging enough. - It has plenty of review Even though the lessons are short, I've noticed it goes over already learned concepts continuously. This is the only level we've tried though so take that as it is. This is especially so if you buy the companion workbook "Practice Makes Perfect". Its basically a book of constant review which is also in full color so that's nice. - Its fairly inexpensive This has been the cheapest math curriculum we've tried yet. You don't need to purchase any manipulatives. -Is it enough? I would say at this very moment, yes, it is. Its exactly what my daughter needed. However, I will say, if we didn't have the Practice Makes Perfect companion workbook, I'm really unsure if it would be enough. I'm a little nervous going into higher grades with the way concepts are taught in the book (through story). I'm just hoping harder concepts will be taught appropriately. The true test will be next year (level 3) learning multiplication and division. Overall, this curriculum has been wonderful for us. The gentle lessons have made it so that my daughter doesn't feel overwhelmed while doing a lesson and because of that her confidence has grown significantly in math. Is this our forever math? Probably not. But it is definitely what we need right now!

A common question I’m asked is: How do I improve my child’s focus? When I ask follow up questions, parents tell me that when doing certain assignments or a specific subject, their unique homeschoolers become easily distracted and struggle to focus. I know it doesn’t seem like it, but the lack of focus is a form of resistance. Think about all of the things your child likes to do that they will focus on for extended periods of time. If your child doesn’t want to focus or concentrate on an assignment or activity, it’s because your homeschooler feels it isn’t right for them. You can either modify it or change it altogether. Trying to get your child to focus on something that they aren’t able to do isn’t going to improve their ability to focus. ❤️ Providing your child with engaging and meaningful learning experiences is a wonderful way to give your homeschooler opportunities to focus and improve their concentration skills. What does this mean and how are you supposed to do this? No one expects you to figure it out on your own. SPRING PROTOCOL Our homeschool co-op, Classical Conversations, gives the Challenge 1 through Challenge 4 students an opportunity to practice proper etiquette for formal occasions. Kaden and Kaleigha along with their fellow classmates dressed in their finest, ate together over a five-course meal in an upscale setting, engaged in rich conversation, attended a Romeo and Juliet ballet with a live orchestra, and ended the evening with gelato before getting back onto the private shuttle where they sang the night away. This formal event was a celebration of their efforts and friendship. What makes me a successful homeschooler? I've pondered this question frequently over the years; at times, I've even questioned my success. But through my experiences, I've come to realize that I am a successful homeschooler. If I were to choose one word for my success, it would be: tenacity. Regardless of what has occurred or the challenges that have arisen, I persist, adapting where necessary, experimenting with new approaches, and refraining from labeling myself as a failure. While they participate in this fun science experiment, they are also kept busy 😂🫶🏽🤭. Step One: grab artificial flowers and place them in an ice molder with water over night. Step Two: remove the ice mold and allow your child to choose any item they would like to use to smash the ice As they are engaging with the activity ask them questions that relate to what they are doing for example; 1.what do you think is inside of the ice? 2. How does the ice feel? Is it hot or is it cold? 3. What color is the flower? 4. As April comes to a close, I'm filled with immense gratitude for each and every one of you who have been a part of our homeschooling journey this month. We are back this week and welcome all continuing or new homeschooling families. Group runs from 12:30-3:30 each Wednesday of term in Moss Vale (send a message if you don’t know the location and want to come). We have two extra options from 11;30-12:30 each week too. For High School age students we run a Critical Thinking Discussion Group and for Primary School ages we run a parent led Art Class. There is a $40 fee per family per term ($10 casual visit capped at $40). Cash only. When our boys were little we’d read books and spend time each day exploring the many “rabbit trails” of learning that would naturally sprout up from the ideas and subjects that would come up in our reading. 📚 Now, with one in high school, and my other 2 not far behind, our days are becoming more regimented and filled with the duties of courses for credit and responsibilities such as chores, deadlines and other outside activities. This often leaves me feeling nostalgic for those early homeschool days and kind of sad about the fact that we can’t spend as much time exploring interesting topics together as we used to. 🪲 But, the other day, it occurred to me that my boys still continue to engage in lots of interest-led learning. It just looks different than it did when they were younger. Our days aren’t necessarily filled with this kind of learning together anymore, as the reality now is that they have more disciplined studies they need to attend to in order to accomplish certain goals they have set. 💪🏻 So, nowadays, interest-led learning for our boys looks less varied but more specialized, specific & individualized. It includes Civil Air Patrol cadet meetings, activities & assignments. It involves marksmanship at the range 🔫. It includes time on Microsoft flight simulator and tank battles on War Thunder. It looks like tinkering with Crunch Labs or making dinner with Raddish Kits subscription kits. It looks like heading to the library for an hour gathering books on whatever topic they’re currently interested in (most often aircraft, military, and history topics!). And sometimes it’s answering one of the many questions that pop up during the week in our “Book of Answers” journal @ridgeback_press 📝 So, if you feel you may be missing something from your homeschool years gone by…maybe it hasn’t necessarily gone anywhere- but rather, it’s shifted and changed as your children and homeschool has shifted and changed throughout the years ❤️ What does interest-led learning look like in your homeschool? #homeschoolinghighschool #homeschoolingmiddleschool #homeschooling boys #interestledlearning #lovingthemiddleyears
