Palestinian writer Basim Khandaqji, jailed 20 ears ago in Israel, won a prestigious prize for Arabic fiction on Sunday for his novel A Mask, the Colour of the Sky. The award of the 2024 International Prize for Arabic Fiction was announced at a ceremony in Abu Dhabi. The prize was accepted on Khandaqji’s behalf by Rana Idriss, owner of Dar al-Adab, the book’s Lebanon-based publisher. Khandaqji was born in the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Nablus in 1983, and wrote short stories until his arrest in 2004 at the age of 21. He was convicted and jailed on charges relating to a deadly bombing in Tel Aviv, and completed his university education from inside prison via the internet. The mask in the novel’s title refers to the blue identity card that Nur, an archaeologist living in a refugee camp in Ramallah, finds in the pocket of an old coat belonging to an Israeli. If someone is saying there is proof of “Israel committing the atrocities of October 7th for the past 75 years”, why not just share it? I think it’s because people are just parroting what they hear. Do I think every IDF soldier is innocent. No. There isn’t an army on this planet that doesn’t have a few bad apples. That’s not what October 7th was though. It wasn’t an invasion of Israeli military bases by Hms and a stray terrorist or two, a couple “bad apples” so to speak, committing those atrocities. The infliction of this barbarity was planned. The killing, rape, and kidnapping of innocent people was premeditated. If anything there may have been a couple “good apples” (if you can say that about terrorists) that chose NOT to commit those crimes against humanity. Even taking the children and baby hostage, immediately afterwards Hms could have said this was not our intention, we do not condone the taking of children and baby hostages, we are returning them immediately but keeping all adults. Even though that is STILL a war crime, it would have given SOME sense of humanity. That isn’t what happened. We could get into the debate of Israeli government and politics or a two state solution but ultimately, that isn’t what this is about. Hamas has said that they are reviewing a new Israeli proposal for a truce and hostage deal. Deputy head of Hamas’s political arm Khalil Al Hayya stated that “the Hamas movement received the official Zionist occupation response to the movement’s position, which was delivered to the Egyptian and Qatari mediators on April 13”.
