The Islamic State group has claimed a gun attack on a minority Shiite Mosque in western Afghanistan that killed six people on Monday. In this post I share many great findings published by the Institute for Economics & Peace. Firstly, while the alarming spike in terrorism-related deaths to 8,352 in 2023 demands attention, it's crucial to juxtapose this with the noteworthy decrease in the number of attacks, down to 3,350 incidents. Contributing factors include the de-escalation of the Syrian civil war, IS’ operational shift from MENA to the Sahel region, and enhanced counterterrorism cooperation at both national and international levels. Afghanistan's remarkable progress, with an 81% reduction in terrorism-related deaths is largely due to the withdrawal of US forces and the Taliban taking control of administration, this doesn’t mean all is well, but only that terrorism is used less as a weapon of war. The spotlight now turns to Burkina Faso, where a stark 68% increase in fatalities signals a pressing need for counter-terrorism interventions. The Sahel region emerges as a focal point, bearing the brunt of terrorism with almost half of all global deaths attributed to it. This underscores the urgency of bolstering regional cooperation and capacity-building efforts to address underlying drivers of extremism. Furthermore, the correlation between conflict zones and terrorism is striking, with over 90% of attacks transpiring in such areas. This highlights the symbiotic relationship between conflict and terrorism, necessitating comprehensive approaches that address root causes while simultaneously combating extremist ideologies. Turning to the US context, the prevalence of politically motivated attacks, particularly those with far-right affiliations, warrants careful scrutiny. Understanding the dynamics driving such extremism is essential for crafting effective counterterrorism measures and safeguarding national security interests.

Abiola Ajetomobi, came to Australia in 2008 from Nigeria. --- I was born in Ilorin in Nigeria into a family of 25 children. My father had five wives and two concubines. My mum had five children and she was the first wife. My childhood was very chaotic because we all lived under the same roof. The house had five rooms, pretty much every wife had a room to herself, and my dad juggled between rooms depending on who’s week it was. But my dad made sure that one of the things we did to unify us was to have dinner together. There was love, there was hate, there was anger, there was friendship, there was everything… I was a very devoted Muslim. I wore the scarf and all that. But I became a Christian at the age of 17. I remember the first day I told my brother he gave me slap. He couldn’t believe that was coming out of my mouth. But they are all Christians now. After I finished secondary school I went to Bible college where I met my husband. We married in 2001 and started a family. In 2004 he started his church. It was quite a traumatic time. It was during the time of Boko Haram and it became very unsafe for us to be in the country. Muslims and Christians started fighting each other, burning churches… So we thought we would come [to Australia] for a holiday. On our third day in Melbourne we put in an application for protection, because we knew there was no way we could go back. We had a daughter with us, but we also had twins back in Nigeria. Because of their safety the twins had to be moved and eventually we lost contact with them. I remember all my work mates would ask if I had heard from my children and I would burst into tears. It became very difficult to trace them and it was not automatic to bring children in; it was 18 months before the children joined us. Even when I saw them at the airport, I did not recognise them, they literally walked past me! If you saw them now you would not even believe that they were not born here, they are so Aussie. In what is possibly DS9’s darkest episode, “The Darkness and the Light (S5E11), members of Kira’s former cell are fatally picked off one by one by an elusive assassin who leaves cryptic messages meant for Kira Nerys. Eventually, Kira – who at this point in time is pregnant (don’t ask how) – gets taken captive by the assassin only to discover it is a Cardassian civilian worker who was disfigured and traumatized due to a bomb set off by Kira’s cell meant to assassinate a Cardassian commander in his residence. The bomb ended up killing 12 people including the commander’s wife and children. Kira’s would-be assassin, Silaran, correctly proclaims that his retaliation has only been by murdering “the guilty” – that is, the individuals responsible for that specific attack. To keep consistent with his quest to spare innocent people from his vengeful murder spree, he threatens to perform a C-section on Kira so that her unborn child may be spared from him murdering her. When Silaran contrasts him killing “the guilty” with Kira supposedly being indiscriminate in her killings, you’d think Kira would show regret for her actions. A full quarter century after the event, I just wanted to say a word of remembrance for the victims of the 1999 London nail bombings, a campaign of racist and homophobic terror conducted by neo-Nazi terrorist David Copeland, which culminated in the horrific bombing of the Admiral Duncan pub in Soho, which killed three people and maimed and injured dozens more. As a British person, I remember this terrible event with horrible clarity, and am as familiar with Soho as I am fond of it. It really hit home. For such savage violence and hatred to be unleashed in this beloved and ‘safe’ part of London, and against the harmless gay community, seemed incomprehensible to me. It still does.
