🇮🇸 Iceland North 🇮🇸 Húsavík is the whale-watching capital, and while we didn’t book any boat tour, I had my eyes peeled on the sea at all times. Sadly, I did not spot any from the shore, but the views up there were unreal. That’s just it… some of these sites felt so other worldly that they weren’t real, even right before my eyes. We found a really great camp spot off the beaten path on a farm overlooking the ocean… after a soak at GeoSea, my favorite spa bath. You really can’t top an infinity hot bath, on the edge of the almost Arctic Sea with insane mountains beyond. Scott cold plunged in the snow here - I had given up on cold plunging by that point because our daytime cold blasts were enough of a shock to my system. 😂🥶 At camp the first night in the north, we waited for hours to catch a glimpse of the aurora on what was supposed to be a really active night but I already told that story… fate turned off our heater and woke up Scott at 3am. A precursor for the next night. From Húsavík, we ventured to Goðafoss - waterfall of the gods or god of waterfalls. That it was. Another beautiful cascade of rushing Icelandic nature. For lunch, we made a brief stop in Akureyri, a bustling northern city. As soon as we arrived in the city, I wanted to be back out in the remote parts. It was a very cute and accommodating spot, but I had zero interest in shopping and just wanted to keep taking in the landscapes. After some on-the-fly research we found our destination for that night in Hvammstangi at seal beach. Scoped out the territory which was free from light and noise pollution (fave). The forecast called for moderate aurora activity amidst clear skies so the chances of catching the Northern Lights were high. We waited until total darkness, which took until about 10-10:30pm. Weather apps said last light was like 9:15pm… not enough darkness until well after that. Scott made fast friends with an Irish couple camping next to us while I was staying warm in our van.
