“A fight isn’t a fight until there’s resistance and until something has to be overcome. Otherwise it’s just an exhibition. I think life is like that.” — Teddy Atlas ———————————————————— I still have so much to learn and experience when it comes to marathon training and this marathon build-up was no exception. Boston 2019 would only have been my third marathon. The training cycle this time around was nothing I hadn’t done before in the previous two build-ups. Even so, four weeks out from Boston I had a sudden injury which has continued to keep me from making it to the starting line. I’ve been injured before, but not before a big event like Boston. The feeling that my last 10 weeks of hard work had all been a waste definitely crossed my mind. As disappointing as it initially was, I realized how this is just another experience of how a training cycle can go, and I am stronger now because of it. Honestly, this marathon build-up was challenging, I had come off a few weeks rest from running CIM in early December and starting back up again wasn’t something I was truly excited about, but I know it takes hard work and I was ready to put my head down and just get the workouts and long runs done. I believe a lot of factors led to my subsequent injury, but I no longer consider those weeks of training a waste. I have that fitness to build on in coming training, and have tried to use this set-back as a time to rest, as well as a time to think about what worked and where I could make changes. I’m not sure this would have happened if I had managed to muddle through this training cycle and make it to the start of Boston un-injured. I’m so grateful for everyone who has been so encouraging to me and helped me in so many ways. Even though I won’t be running this year, I’ll be traveling to Boston anyway, and I’m so excited to cheer on my friends and Varsity teammates who have worked so hard to get there and look forward to finally experiencing Marathon Monday first-hand. 💙💛

Three years ago this week I donated the crutches that had carried me for six months to the Free Masons in Malden, MA and continued the journey that a seriously broken ankle & broken leg had set me on. In the last month, I've walked more consistently than I have since 2012 and am in the hands of a physical therapist who just might be able to get me back to jogging. Hello endorphins, I've missed you!

I'm sick so killing time doing my nails in the car while G is in dance class.

Cardio done and it literally killed me. How did this happen? My endurance is lacking heavily. Seriously was hanging onto my dreadmill in order to keep going. So not looking forward to doing this again on Thursday. #cardio #restday #treadmill #slowrunner #idratherbejogging #fitby40 #noexcuses #earnyoursweat

This is the best description I've heard of what I love and miss about #running...

Day 12: #Direction - An over the shoulder while driving shot on my way back from having coffee with @escaphotography. He's one of the many very cool people I've met in the past year in both Boston & Colorado through Instagram. ...And a big shout out to his wife who wasn't able to join us - Hey @ekl222! :) ...This trip out West has really given me some much needed direction in my job search and alignment in my saga of #brokenankle & #brokenleg recovery. Many thanks to the universe for all of the above.

#BrokenLeg / #BrokenAnkle #Recovery - 375 days: As someone who did #ballet from age 4-14, I expected to be able to slide right into #firstposition today when my doctor asked me to try it. Despite my injuries and recent pain in my #hip, I thought that sounded simple enough. ...As I attempted to turn out from my right hip, my stomach lurched and I felt like a barely supported piece of #plywood in the #wind and that was the easiest of the things she asked me to do. ...Humm, I guess I still have #WorkToDo!

Happy Break-a-versary to me! :) ...As some of you know, I broke my leg & ankle at the end of last summer. Today is exactly a year from that day! I painted my toes to celebrate my lovely non-swollen #ankle & muscle-toned #calf. It's been one heck of a crazy ride this year! Thanks so much to those of you who've encouraged me through out it, especially @rayray74, @coloradowild, @darrenisreal, @camedownfromcincinnati, & @thewinkle. xo

After a #brokenleg, #brokenankle and having #surgery twice on them between now & August 2011, I graduated from #physicaltherapy today! Lots of #hardwork, #sweat & a few #tears. So glad to be on the cusp of #jogging & #dancing again. :)

#FreezeFrame #MovieReel: My formerly #brokenleg & #brokenankle workin the #stationary bike at the #gym followed by #treadmill time alternating speed walking & incline, then 5 minutes of #jogging. #workit #idratherbejogging #physicaltherapy

On #cloud nine today - I did something resembling #jogging today for 30 seconds on the treadmill at my old settings!! :) :) ...8 months to the day after a serious leg & ankle break. ...4 months after screw removal.

4/13/2012, 6:35:00 PM

I'm very #proud of this #leg today. It did single leg, seated #calf raises with 40 lbs, something closely resembling #skipping and walked on an #incline of 5.00 on the #treadmill while concentrating very hard on not limping. ...8 months post-leg & ankle break. 4 months post-screw removal.

Some of my newer followers may not know this, but I broke my #ankle & my #leg badly in August. I started using Instagram while I was on crutches living in an apartment up two flights of stairs that I could barely get up & down. Last night I had a bit of a breakthrough. I'd figured out a way to manipulate my #fibula by hand similar to what my therapist does, but with less intensity. After doing it & seeing my foot point more than it has in a long while, I flexed it & tried to point again - and I felt a little pop and it pointed beautifully again!!

Just went to the #gym to go my #physicaltherapy #routine for the first time since my insurance won't pay for me to see my physical therapist anymore. At the PT place I was starting to feel like a rockstar, at the gym I feel like a weak fool who can't do the things I wanted to be able to do by the end of PT.... #Frustrating #SepiaSunday.

#Friends of mine who I was #training for the #BolderBoulder with gave me this after I had to go to a doctor's appointment instead of #jog with them. I wore it to #PhysicalTherapy yesterday & I think my PT saw it as a #challenge: new, more effective hand manipulation via a consult with one of the other PTs, increased weights & (for the first time) 5 minutes #walking on the treadmill as fast as I could. ...After 2 icing sessions, sleeping with it elevated & compressed, I'm still feeling it today. #brokenleg #brokenankle #recovery #workit #joint #exercise #health
