Bodybuilding phenom HAROLD POOLE died in New York City in August, 2014. He was 70. Mr. Poole won the 1963 IFBB Mr. Universe title at age 19 and was the first African-American IFBB Mr. America winner the following year. He was the only physique star who had the courage to compete against the great Larry Scott at the first IFBB Mr. Olympia contest in 1965 and competed professionally until his late 30's. Mr. Williams kicked off his career in the late-1970's, winning the Teen category at the 1979 AAU Mr. Coastal USA show; winning the overall Open title at the Coastal USA the following year. Four years later in 1984, Mr. Williams won the Light-Heavyweight and overall titles at the NPC USA Championships; cementing his claim in the upper ranks of amateur American bodybuilding. The legendary LEE HANEY (pictured middle), defeated Gunnar Rosbo (pictured left) and Ralf Moeller (pictured right) to win the Heavyweight Class at the 1982 IFBB Mr. Universe competition. Mr. Rosbo placed second, followed by Mr. Moeller who finished third in the class. Mr. Haney's Universe victory capped off a strong competitive year, winning overall titles at the NPC Junior Nationals and NPC Men's Nationals, where he held off Matt Mendenhall in the Heavyweight Class. Mr. Haney's first year as an IFBB pro in 1983 was equally as successful with overall victories at the Las Vegas Grand Prix and Night of Champions, with a solid 3rd place finish at his first IFBB Mr. Olympia. Mr. Haney never finished third in the Olympia again after 1983, winning eight consecutive Sandow trophies in his brilliant pro career. MIKE CHRISTIAN (Born 1955), the famed Golden Era IFBB pro, graced the cover of the September, 1985 issue of "Iron Man" magazine during his first full year as a professional. Mr. Christian kicked off his career in the late-1970's, rising the ranks, winning the Heavyweight Class at the 1981 AAU Mr. California show; winning the overall Open title at the California in 1983. Shortly after winning Mr. California, Mr. Christian made his move, finishing in 3rd place in the Heavyweight Class at the NPC Men's Nationals, competively finishing behind Bob Paris and Rory Liedelmeyer. Mr. Christian returned to the Men's Nationals in 1984, this time winning the Heavyweight Class over Matt Mendenhall and the overall title; earning his way to the IFBB Mr. Universe show, winning the Heavyweight Class and his IFBB pro card. Mr. Christian got off to a solid start as a pro in 1985, placing 4th at the Night of Champions and 5th in his first Olympia, just finishing behind Lee Haney, Albert Beckles, Rich Gaspari and Mohamed Makkawy. WALTER MILNER (pictured right), an up-and-coming Canadian bodybuilder tied Sweden's Janko Rudman (pictured left) for fifth place in the competitive Medium Class at the IFBB Mr. Universe contest in 1975. So the judges requested that both athletes undergo a special posedown for final placement, won by Mr. Rudman, who was awarded fifth, while Mr. Milner had to settle for sixth. The legendary Robby Robinson won the overall Medium Class crown, with Albert Beckles placing second, France's Gerard Buinoud in third and Japan's Hideyuki Kosaki in fourth. There were 29 athletes in the Medium Class alone at the Universe that year. Mr. Milner earned his pro card after winning the Mr. Canada title in 1975 and was highly regarded by athletes at the original Gold's Gym for his thick shoulders, triceps and traps. He died tragically while working as a high-rise window washer in 1983. He was in his mid-30's when he passed. The 29-year old American bodybuilder KEN WALLER won the Amateur Division at the NABBA Mr. Universe competition in 1971. 6-foot tall and weighing more than 230-pounds, Mr. Waller also won IFBB Mr. Universe, IFBB Mr. World, IFBB Mr. International and IFBB Mr. America; netting him four (4) overall titles in Joe and Ben Weider's pro circuit. He's likely best known as the "villain" in the famed 1977 bodybuilding documentary, "Pumping Iron," who supposedly hides Mike Katz's lucky t-shirt to throw off his concentration backstage. It was later revealed that part of the film was staged and that Mr. Waller and Mr. Katz were actually good friends in real life. Mr. Waller turns 82 in March. 11-9-2023... Happy Birthday to a Former award-winning bodybuilder/actor who overcame his childhood deafness disability and became an icon in bodybuilding and in Hollywood. As a child, this Brooklyn, New York native had lost about 70%-80 % of his hearing by the tender age of 3. He also had slight speech impediment. Both of these ailments made him the object of constant ridicule as a child. He was often bullied by his peers. He began reading comics like Spider-Man and the Hulk. He was also a big fan of Hercules TV star/Bodybuilder Steeve Reeves. This gave him an obsession with power. He quoted: " I wanted to be strong enough so I could defend myself". At 13 he began training himself using broomsticks and pails. After graduating high school in 1969 he won his first major Bodybuilding title, IFBB Mr. Amercia. This fueled his passion. He would win IFFB Mr. Universe soon after. His Muscle career would soar into superstardom. He would go on to win several major titles. He even had an appearance in the 1977 bodybuilding documentary film. That same year he was cast as The Incredible Hulk (1977-1982) and the rest is television and cinematic history. In 1983 he was also cast as Hercules in a Sci Fi Hollywood film. He had became the heroes he admired as a child... He saw, He conquered. He overcame to achieve GREATESS. Physique legend LEE LABRADA (Born 1960) retired in 1995 after placing 5th at the IFBB Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic. Mr. Labrada won his pro card at the 1985 IFBB Mr. Universe competition and was one of the most consistent bodybuilders of his generation, placing in the top-4 for seven consecutive years at the IFBB Mr. Olympia. Mr. Labrada was inducted into the IFBB Pro-Bodybuilding Hall of Fame in 2004. HUNTER LABRADA won the Men's Open Class at the IFBB Chicago Pro competition in July, 2021. Mr. Labrada (then age 29), the son of bodybuilding legend Lee Labrada, defeated an impressive Brett Wilkin, who finished second over better known athletes like Maxx Charles and Roelly Winklaar. Mr. Labrada, who won his pro debut at the Tampa Pro in 2020 and placed 8th at that year's Mr. Olympia, continued to make his charge up the IFBB Open Class ranks with his overall victory. Had an amazing day today I won both of my categories I couldn't be happier. No time to rest yet I have to keep pushing much harder now for the next 3 weeks as I'm going to compete in CZECH REPUBLIC PRAGUE on 22nd May in the MR UNIVERSE. I've won the WORLD TITLE and the ARNOLD CLASSIC TITLE I've only got the MR UNIVERSE TITLE to win. The bodybuilding phenom HAROLD POOLE was featured in a training article in the January-February, 1966 issue of Joe Weider's "Mr. America" magazine. Mr. Poole (1943-2014) won the 1963 IFBB Mr. Universe title at age 19 and was the first African-American IFBB Mr. America winner the following year. He was the only physique star who had the courage to compete against the great Larry Scott at the first Mr. Olympia contest in 1965 and competed professionally until his late 30's in the early-1980's. Mr. Poole was inducted to the IFBB Hall of Fame in 2004 and the WBBG Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2008, Mr. Poole was voted the Greatest Teenage Bodybuilder of All-Time.
