People with Jalisciense roots, I want to share this with you. My knowledge of my ancestry was greatly severed as my maternal grandma grew up an orphan. But through research, I was able to figure out the language my grandma sprinkles in along with her spanish. It is the language of the Coca people who live in the same region my grandma and mother are from. If anyone is looking for this very hard to find book, I have the pdf and want to share it. Just dm for it. It is in spanish! #cocapeople #indigenous #indigenousmexico #ancestralknowledge #knowledge #pdfsharing #chicana #cocalanguage

This is a new painting I am working on in oil on canvas, which features a nearly life-size image of Cinteotl, Our Lord the Corn. Modern Nahua and Totonac people from the state of Vera Cruz continue to tell sacred narratives about the Lord of Corn, for whom He has always been sacred and venerated. They say that His grandmother, the Earth, hated Him and wanted to kill Him. One day, She took Him by His heel and ground Him into masa, and threw the masa in the river. The fish found the masa, and miraculously put Him back together and gave Him life again. They took Him to the Lords of Death, who, amazed that He had come back to life, dressed Him in jade and precious feathers. They summoned the sea turtle, and He mounted Her back. They say that He painted all the flowers of summer on Her back as She carried Him to the surface, where He was reborn. This story is a metaphor, which describes the death of the corn every year. The turtle is the earth, and She carries Him back to the surface, where He is reborn. Versions of this sacred narrative were told by the ancient Maya. In one painting shared here the fish put Him back together, and in the other He is born from the back of the Earth´s sea-turtle shell. In my painting, He is painting flower-glyphs on the back of the turtle, which transform and grow into an actual garden of flowers among which He sits. It will take months to finish this painting, but I will share the process as I go! Also, I am so white-looking because I am mixed race. Lots of people have been commenting on that lately, and sending me messages! My mom is Mexican and native, and also mixed race, while my dad is white from the US, and I look like him. But my grandmother was Wixa, and I grew up in a Spanish speaking household with my Mexican mom. My heart and culture are Mexican, and I make this work to honor my ancestors and my heritage! #cinteotl #centeotl #chicomexochitl #ancientmaya #corngod #ancientmexico #oilpainting #mexicanart #ancientmexico #indigenousmexico #nativeart #nativespirituality

Repost from @apnews • Guided by their ancestral lunar calendar, members of Mexico’s Purepecha Indigenous group celebrated their own New Year’s Eve — a little differently than the West’s traditional New Year. The Purepechas, who live in the western state of Michoacán, preserve the pre-Hispanic belief in the “New Fire” ceremony, a version of which was also practiced by their ancient rivals to the east, the Aztecs. Because the Purepechas’ lunar calendar of 18 months leaves an orphan day that belongs to no month, that day — which this year fell on Thursday — is viewed as a time for both mourning and renewal. That is when a symbolic fire is extinguished. Step into a world where each skateboard is a masterpiece of history and heritage.  Our collection showcases the unparalleled craftsmanship of the Wixáritari artisans, who infuse each piece with symbols and motifs that have been sacred to their culture for generations.  Beyond their vibrant beadwork, the Wixáritari are also known for their yarn paintings, a unique art form where colored threads are pressed onto wax-coated boards to depict complex spiritual narratives and natural imagery.  These art pieces serve not just as decor but as profound storytellers of the cosmos, reflecting the Wixáritari’s deep reverence for the natural world and their ancestors’ wisdom. 🌌🌵 These boards were created by the indigenous people of the region in collaboration between Emily Kosko and Felix De Saracho. #HuicholCulture #WixaritariWay #Huicholskate #Huicholskateboard #IndigenousMexico #HuicholPatterns #SpiritualJourneyArt #MexicanFolkArt #AncestralArt #HuicholBeadArt #SierraMadreArt #IndigenousPeoplesArt #CulturalPreservation #SacredNatureArt #VisionaryArt #TraditionalMexicanArt #IndigenousArtistry #CulturalArtifacts #ArtAndTradition

In the village of San Juan de Chamula, there is unique and fascinating church, which blends together indigenous Tzotzil Mayan traditions with Catholicism. From the outside, the Templo de San Juan appears to be just like any other church in Mexico. But inside it’s completely different; It is the most interesting church I've ever stepped foot inside. There are no pews, instead , dry pine needles cover the tile floor. Mismatched tables line the walls of the church, topped with thousands of flickering candles of all shapes and sizes. Worshipers kneel down on the pine needle-covered floor and chant prayers in their native tongue. There are also sacrifices at the altar, which can involve chickens, yet didn't see any today. Absolutely No photos allowed. If caught they smash your 📷 , put you in a wooden box in center of town under the sun ☀️ for up to a week, and then fine you up to 10k pesos 😱 Tour operators and police cannot help you so needless to say I played by the rules! #indigenouspeople #indigenousmexico #travelingmexico #travellife #intrepid

For centuries, Indigenous peoples across Latin America have been the targets of oppression, discrimination, and violence. To address the systematic inequities they still face today, they’ve created groups and movements to demand liberation and autonomy. In Mexico, one such group is known as The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN). For decades, they’ve fought against the Mexican government and established independent, autonomous townships in Chiapas known as the Rebel Zapatista Autonomous Municipalities, which established their own healthcare, education, and agricultural systems without government aid. In a statement from this week, the group announced that they would be dissolving these townships but did not give a specific reason why though they cited group gang violence in the area of Chiapas that borders Guatemala, the Associated Press reported. “In upcoming statements, we will describe the reasons and the processes involved in taking this decision,” the Zapatista Army said in the statement signed by Subcommander Moises. “We will also begin explaining what the new structure of Zapatista autonomy will look like, and how it was arrived at.” Click LINKINBIO to read more. Story by Sofía Aguilar @sofiaxaguilar

For the people of Mexico, death doesn’t necessarily mean it is the end. There are a few nights throughout the year where the veil between worlds is at its thinnest and the spirits of our loved ones are able to come back to our world and visit. Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is a religious holiday combining the Death veneration rituals of Pre-Hispanic cultures with the Catholic practice. Based on the belief that the souls of the departed return to this world on that day, it is widely celebrated throughout Mexico. People gather together while either praying or joyfully eating, drinking, or parading in costumes through towns, to remember friends or family members who have died and to support their souls on the spiritual journey. . . #purepecha #purepechas #dayofthedead #diademuertos #diadelosmuertos #dayofthedeadmexico #diademuertosmexico #indigenousmexico #nativeamerican #indigenous #indigenousmexican #mexicannative #indigenouscultures #americanindian #indigena #mexicodesconocido #magiclight #mexicomagico #mexicolindo #mexicomistico #flordemuertos #cempasuchil #photojournalism #mexicotravel #lightiseverything #travellingtheworld #visualstorytelling #photojournalism #mexicoculture #culturamexicana

So beautiful… tandem breastfeeding twin mama from Oaxaca, Mexico 🤍🤍 Reposted from @2lifedoula Can you still breastfeed exclusively if you have twins? In a word - absolutely ✨ That being said, more babies definitely require more support. It can be helpful to seek out the support of a lactation counselor before the birth and set up additional help for the postpartum period such as from your partner, friends or family members, or a postpartum doula (or ideally all of the above!) It’s also so, so important to be nourish yourself properly when breastfeeding, particularly with lots of nutrient-dense foods - and this is especially true when feeding multiple babies at the same time! Also adequate hydration, with water, herbal teas, bone broth, and more is crucial. And remember, every drop counts 💧 It’s important to give yourself plenty of grace and love and honor your unique breastfeeding/bodyfeeding journey - always. Although exclusively breastfeeding twins is certainly possible, nursing multiples can sometimes come with additional challenges, especially if they are born premature. Remember to be grateful to yourself for all the milk you are able to give your babies and the time you are able to nurse, whether a few weeks or a few years 🤍 📸 repost from @suhailaguirre • #Repost sacred.earth.motherhood ・・・ Mujer mexicana, oaxaqueña, istmeña y madre. 💜 #breastfeeding #breastfeedingart #indigenousmotherhood #indigenousmexico #indigenousmilkmedicine #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeedingtwins #breastfeedingphotoshoot #oaxaca #oaxacamexico #lactancia #amamentar #amamentando #lactation #lactationconsultant #ibclc #doula #midwife #tandembreastfeeding #tandemnursing

Yaotl - Yosmanny “Manny” Michaca Vivar “I don’t really know why, but Danza just clicked with me. Maybe it’s a link to my great-grandma’s Mixtec roots and natural healing traditions. Or maybe it’s the sense of belonging I feel when I dance – a feeling I missed when I was little, when I was trying to fit in the American customs at school and with peers. There were times in my life I felt adrift, lost, but Danza became my anchor, especially during my darkest moments. Through its rhythm and movements, I found a sense of safety and a community of incredible souls who see and embrace the real me. Whatever the deeper reason, when I dance, I feel alive, connected, and whole. I just feel Danza is my thing, and I hope it’s a path I keep growing in.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “The pre-Hispanic and ancestral tradition of dance has given me a sense of identity. It gives me direction to know the inheritance I have the right to carry and practice. Working with fire connects me with my maternal lineage. When my mother recognized my dedication to cultural practice she told me that when she was a child she saw a woman who was her aunt dance. She began to tell me things that she had never told me and I can identify that they are vestiges of our traditions. In the tradition women carried the fire. One of the ways to pray through fire that survived in my lineage was when cooking. The woman who prepares the food blesses it before starting to put it on the fire. My ancestors carried the fire, my great aunt, my grandmother, my mother and now me.” #photography #portraitphotography #mexica #aztec #azteca #danzaazteca #indigenous #indigena #indigenousmexico #canon #canonphotography #mexico #lightroom

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “I already danced back in Mexico but when I came here I reinforced it. My uncle Daniel already danced in Mexico City and it's how dance came home…when I moved to the Philadelphia is when I started practicing…it was an identity rescue that began here in Philadelphia. I also come from the state of Puebla but surely my ancestors come from those who are Cholultecas or the Huejotzingos... I probably come more from there, but those nations in those times also spoke Nahuatl. Back home we still spoke Nahuatl and its how we came to preserve it. And well I have about 18-19 years with danza.” #photography #portraitphotography #mexica #aztec #azteca #danzaazteca #indigenous #indigena #indigenousmexico #canon #canonphotography #mexico #lightroom

This 1988 work by Tarahumara artist Frank Mendoza is titled “Eagle Dancer”. The Tarahumara, or self-called Rarámuri, are one of the largest indigenous tribes in North America with nearly 100,000 people. The majority are concentrated in the highlands of the Sierra Madre Occidental, Mexico, while others choose to live in las barrancas – the gorges of the Sierra Madre. Despite their large number, the tribe managed to remain relatively uninfluenced by the surrounding Mexican culture until recently. This is primarily a result of the harsh landscape in which they live, and their general reluctance to embrace outsiders. The Tarahumara have maintained traditional cultural practices in light of ever-increasing outside pressures; in many cases they still rely on the customs of their ancestors. Conquistadors came in contact with the Tarahumara during the 16th century and brought with them Christian missionaries, domesticated animals, cultivated fruit trees, steel tools and certain musical instruments. The Tarahumara incorporated these concepts and items into their everyday life by varying degrees; however, their popular name “Tarahumara” is the most obvious Spanish influence - a mistranslation of the group’s own name, Rarámuri. The Sierra Madre has two contrasting climates: the cool highlands and the tropical barranca (gorges). The highlands provide lumber and land for herding sheep, cattle, and goats as well as crops such as wheat and corn. Those living in the barrancas cultivate fruit trees, marijuana, and tobacco. Many of the Tarahumara that live in the highlands migrate into the barrancas to escape the harsh winters and to keep their herds safe. Despite their different resources, both groups of Tarahumara have similar lifestyles. The narrative and romantizing of the Mexica people continues to this day . Ignorance lies deceit and ill intent continue to plague the minds of his-story His-story-an $ to this day ignore the real and true accounts of the original people of present modern day Mexico and its descendants. Since 1519 the narrative has not changed from invasion to inquisition to continual ongoing genocide thru colonization detribalization displacement disconnected thru what's acceptable and what is not beneficial to those in control. For 500 years + years that narrative has worked . Why , because. Its obvious. Control .fear . The painting is shit to me but its implications are deep. Recently - my dad shared with me that as a kid he loved going to my great-grandfather’s farm. The simplicity of that life style brought him so much joy. But the thing I loved the most from that story was my great-grandfather and grandfather both trained wild horses at their farm. Training and nurturing the horses was very important to them. Hearing that story overwhelmed my heart because for those who know me, know I love animals! If I could I would rescue every animal. When I see a horse I get emotional with their beauty and connection towards humans. Knowing that story made sense to me in why I love animals, and why being around them brings warmth to my heart. I didn’t get to meet my great-grandfather but I find joy knowing we both shared love for horses. 🐴🐎 Cute print - @heirloomprintshop #mexico #indigenousmexico #portuguesa #spainard #basquecountry #mexicolindo #mexico🇲🇽
