Visiting @puromangkunegaran was the highlight of our Solo trip. It’s one of the two royal palaces in Solo. Entrance fee is IDR 20K for Indonesian nationals and IDR 50K for foreign nationals. They have guided tours available in Bahasa, English, Japanese, Chinese, Dutch, Italian, French, and Spanish; tip for the guide is at your own discretion. The Duchy of Mangkunegaran (Kadipaten Mangkunegaran) is one of the 4 princely states descended from Mataram Sultanate. The duchy split from the Sunanate (kingdom) of Surakarta in 1757, after the rebellion led by Prince Raden Mas Said (later coronated as Duke Mangkunegara I) ceased with VOC (Dutch East Indies Company) mediation. Despite getting half of the Sunanate of Surakarta's territory, Adipati (Duke) Mangkunegara agreed that he was inferior to the Surakarta Sunan (king). The palace is called "pura" (mansion) rather than "keraton" (royal palace). It is much smaller in size, has no throne and throne room, also has less weeping fig trees (pohon beringin) than the Surakarta keraton; among other things to show that Sunanate of Surakarta is still the "king". Pura Mangkunegara, despite the "smaller" size, is very well maintained. The architecture and interior are a combination of Javanese and European styles, as you can see in the photos. The turquoise color (called “pari anom” in Javanese language) is the color of Mangkunegaran royal family. The building is full of cultural meaning too, such as how each color in the batik-patterned ceiling symbolize different things (see @thetravelingeunikorn story highlight “Solo”). The current Adipati (Duke) of Mangkunegara is KGP Adipati Arya Mangkunegara X, who was born as GPH Bhre Cakrahutomo Wira Sudjiwo, a 25 years-old lawyer @bhresudjiwo .

Prambanan Temple Compounds consist of Prambanan Temple (also called Roro Jonggrang), Siwa Temple, Bubrah Temple and Lumbung Temple. Prambanan Temple itself is a complex consisting of 240 temples. All the mentioned temples form the Prambanan Archaeological Park and were built during the heyday of Sailendra’s powerful dynasty in Java in the 8th century AD. These compounds are located on the border between the two provinces of Yogyakarta and Central Java on Java Island. While Roro Jonggrang, dating from the 9th century, is a brilliant example of Hindu religious bas-reliefs, Siwa, with its four pairs of Dwarapala giant statues, is Indonesia’s largest Buddhist complex including the temples of Lumbung, Bubrah and Asu (Gana temple). The Hindu temples are decorated with reliefs illustrating the Indonesian version of the Ramayana epic which are masterpieces of stone carvings. These are surrounded by hundreds of shrines that have been arranged in three parts showing high levels of stone building technology and architecture from the 8th century AD in Java.
