M101 The Pinwheel Galaxy. I took this image over the course of multiple nights last Spring. During my time imaging, light from a newly discovered supernova reached Earth. This image is comprised of data collected pre and post supernova. Because of this, it appears as a bright yellow “star” in the outer left arm. This image of part of the Horsehead Nebula, captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope and released on April 29, 2024, shows the nebula in a whole new light, capturing the region’s complexity with unprecedented spatial resolution. Located roughly 1,300 light-years away, the nebula formed from a collapsing interstellar cloud of material, and glows because it is illuminated by a nearby hot star. The gas clouds surrounding the Horsehead have already dissipated, but the jutting pillar is made of thick clumps of material and therefore is harder to erode. Astronomers estimate that the Horsehead has about 5 million years left before it too disintegrates. Dark No More: The Low-luminosity Stellar Counterpart of a Dark Cloud in the Virgo Cluster Published in Astrophysical Journal Letters Jones et al. 2024, ApJL, 966, L15 https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/ad3ef5 M.G. Jones, S.Janowiecki, S.Dey, D. J. Sand, P.Bennet, D.Crnojević, C.E. Fielder, A.Karunakaran, B.R. Kent, N. Mazziotti, B.Mutlu-Pakdil, & K. Spekkens We have discovered the stellar counterpart to the ALFALFA Virgo 7 cloud complex, which has been thought to be optically dark and nearly star-free since its discovery in 2007. This ∼190 kpc long chain of enormous atomic gas clouds (M(HI) ∼ 10^9 Msun) is embedded in the hot intracluster medium of the Virgo galaxy cluster but is isolated from any galaxy. Its faint, blue stellar counterpart, BC6, was identified in a visual search of archival optical and UV imaging. Follow-up observations with the #greenbanktelescope, Hobby–Eberly Telescope, and #hubblespacetelescope demonstrate that this faint counterpart is at the same velocity as the atomic gas, actively forming stars, and metal-rich (12 + (O/H) = 8.58 ± 0.25). We estimate its stellar mass to be only log(Mstar/Msun) ~ 4.4 , making it one of the most gas-rich stellar systems known. Aside from its extraordinary gas content, the properties of BC6 are entirely consistent with those of a recently identified class of young, low-mass, isolated, and star-forming clouds in Virgo that appear to have formed via extreme ram pressure stripping events. We expand the existing discussion of the origin of this structure and suggest NGC 4522 as a likely candidate; however, the current evidence is not fully consistent with any of our proposed progenitor galaxies. We anticipate that other "dark" gas clouds in Virgo may have similarly faint, star-forming counterparts. We aim to identify these through the help of a citizen science search of the entire cluster. @national.radio.astronomy @greenbankobservatory @mcdonald_observatory @nasahubble @aas_office @discoveraui @institute_of_physics #science #astronomy #astrophysics #galaxy #galaxies #galaxycluster #galaxyclusters #universetoday #telescope #observatory #hubble #hubbletelescope #greenbankobservatory

The Fairy of Eagle Nebula. The dust sculptures of the Eagle Nebula are evaporating. As powerful starlight whittles away these cool cosmic mountains, the statuesque pillars that remain might be imagined as mythical beasts. Featured here is one of several striking dust pillars of the Eagle Nebula that might be described as a gigantic alien fairy. This fairy, however, is ten light years tall and spews radiation much hotter than common fire. The greater Eagle Nebula, M16, is actually a giant evaporating shell of gas and dust inside of which is a growing cavity filled with a spectacular stellar nursery currently forming an open cluster of stars. This great pillar, which is about 7,000 light years away, will likely evaporate away in about 100,000 years. The featured image in scientifically re-assigned colors was released in 2005 as part of the fifteenth anniversary celebration of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. The Antennae Galaxies are a pair of interacting galaxies in the constellation Corvus. They are currently going through a starburst phase, in which the collision of clouds of gas and dust, with entangled magnetic fields, causes rapid star formation. They were discovered by William Herschel in 1785. 💫 👇 SHOP HERE 👇 https://www.purvanacandleco.com FOLLOW 👉 @purvanacandleco 📥Comment down below “PostOfTheWeek” for a chance to Highlight a post!📥 WANT TO LEARN ABOUT DEEP SPACE⁉️🔽 Follow our page @spaceexploreation to learn more about deep space and to follow along on daily updates, live coverage, amazing space art, amazing photography of the deep parts of space, and videos! 🔭 #explorepage #explore #exploremore #explorepage#nasa #spacex #space #spaceart #deepspace #blackhole #solarsystem #nubula #galaxy #aliens #cosmo #astrology #astronomy #astrophotography #astrologyposts #reels #igtv #timemachine #hubbletelescope #mars #starseed #cosmic #cosmicconsciousness #star #starseed #iss #astro
