The Skyhorse Carousel is both a ride and piece of art which celebrates human culture and cosmology from ancient and modern times. The carousel features animals from different myths and traditions associated with the Sun, Moon, and stars, creating an experience with aspects of science, art, and play. This is a big project I’ve been dreaming up for years and so excited to share it! We have a great team gathered around it as we prepare to paint the horses this month. We will be bringing the carousel to Burning Man this summer, and after that we’ll explore other opportunities in LA. Just Another Day on Aerosol Earth Explanation: For August 23, 2018, the identification and distribution of aerosols in the Earth's atmosphere is shown in this dramatic, planet-wide digital visualization. Produced in real time, the Goddard Earth Observing System Forward Processing (GEOS FP) model relies on a combination of Earth-observing satellite and ground-based data to calculate the presence of types of aerosols, tiny solid particles and liquid droplets, as they circulate above the entire planet. This August 23rd model shows black carbon particles in red from combustion processes, like smoke from the fires in the United States and Canada, spreading across large stretches of North America and Africa. Sea salt aerosols are in blue, swirling above threatening typhoons near South Korea and Japan, and the hurricane looming near Hawaii. Dust shown in purple hues is blowing over African and Asian deserts. The Eagle Nebula (cataloged as Messier 16 or M16, and as NGC 6611, and also known as the Star Queen Nebula) is a young open cluster of stars in the constellation Serpens, discovered by Jean-Philippe de Cheseaux in 1745-46. Regulus and the Dwarf Galaxy Explanation: In northern hemisphere spring, bright star Regulus is easy to spot above the eastern horizon. The alpha star of the constellation Leo, Regulus is the spiky star centered in this telescopic field of view. A mere 79 light-years distant, Regulus is a hot, rapidly spinning star that is known to be part of a multiple star system. Not quite lost in the glare, the fuzzy patch just below Regulus is diffuse starlight from small galaxy Leo I. Leo I is a dwarf spheroidal galaxy, a member of the Local Group of galaxies dominated by our Milky Way Galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). About 800 thousand light-years away, Leo I is thought to be the most distant of the known small satellite galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. While watching Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, I was reminded of a cool astronomy term: syzygy! Hard to believe there’s a real word where every other letter is a y 🤣 . Syzygy refers to when three or more bodies in a gravitational system line up in a straight line. Think of the positions of the earth moon and sun during a lunar or solar eclipse ☀️🌑. Or when the Curiosity rover on Mars observed Mercury transiting in front of the sun (first time a planetary transit was every observed off of Earth)! . NGC 604: Giant Stellar Nursery Explanation: Located some 3 million light-years away in the arms of nearby spiral galaxy M33, giant stellar nursery NGC 604 is about 1,300 light-years across. That's nearly 100 times the size of the Milky Way's Orion Nebula, the closest large star forming region to planet Earth. In fact, among the star forming regions within the Local Group of galaxies, NGC 604 is second in size only to 30 Doradus, also known as the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Cavernous bubbles and cavities in NGC 604 fill this stunning infrared image from the James Webb Space Telescope's NIRCam. Dragon's Egg Bipolar Emission Nebula Explanation: How did a star form this beautiful nebula? In the middle of emission nebula NGC 6164 is an unusually massive star. The central star has been compared to an oyster's pearl and an egg protected by the mythical sky dragons of Ara. The star, visible in the center of the featured image and catalogued as HD 148937, is so hot that the ultraviolet light it emits heats up gas that surrounds it. That gas was likely thrown off from the star previously, possibly the result of a gravitational interaction with a looping stellar companion. Expelled material might have been channeled by the magnetic field of the massive star, in all creating the symmetric shape of the bipolar nebula. Dans sa section inférieure, un moteur central et 16 moteurs auxiliaires alimentent les 52 cadrans de l’horloge (un 53ᵉ cadran est situé à l’arrière de l’horloge pour permettre de la régler), tout en assurant le fonctionnement des sonneries.
